So you're going on a picnic...

It's you and your family or friends. What are you bringing?

I just keep mine simple...a small cooler with sandwich makings, cut-up fruit, and bottled drinks.

Anyone have some really foods or drinks things they bring?

Ideally, just a loaf of crusty French bread, some butter and cheese, grapes or strawberries, maybe a bit of chocolate, wine and/or water. :) I like to keep it simple, too. Oh, and a nice quilt to spread out and lie down on.

We have a car picnic when we travel some times. I fix a basket with sandwiches of spiral sliced ham, cheese, lettuce and tomato(sometimes a blt instead), wrap them in a paper towel and put in individual zip lock baggies so when you open one you have your paper towel in hand. Some chips or veggie sticks, sometimes a jar of mixed nuts. And we always have our mugs of iced water or tea. So we can stop at a rest area or park or where ever and have our lunch and be on our way, plus no worries about what to do with our little dog.

We had a get together with some of my high school class when I was in Louisiana a while back, at a local park. Everyone brought their own food. I stopped and picked up shrimp and oyster po boys from a little drive in that makes wonderful po boys. We were the envy of the group lol. A great time was had by all.

Well what a great report from you, pitimpinai!! The last I heard you were still very low in energy and still on a ton of medication and little appetite, and listen to you, helping the neighbor till up a lawn! LOL What a nice neighbor you were to plant tomatoes and Dahlias. :-) I am happy to hear that you've also benefited from a shorter work day. Great that you had all that time off saved up. I bet you really needed it to get your energy back. We have gotten pretty much back to what is normal for us here. The weather has been stupendous in the past month! I have never seen the cover crop in the veggie beds so high. We've also gotten all the leaves mowed and collected in bins, ours and three neighbors. [g] We have gotten somewhat cleaned up for the year in the garden, but I keep adding to my list of what I want to get done before the weather turns. Still have a small amount of bulbs to plant and three shrubs to get in the ground, some pots to clean and put away and that will just about do it. I am actually looking forward to a break from the garden. Not that we don't get outside and enjoy it, but it's nice this time of year, to focus on other things. During the gardening season, the garden seems to push out other priorities. [g] I enjoy the winter garden and by the time spring comes, I am just itching to get back to a new growing season. Glad you are able to enjoy gardening again and hope you stay well this winter! :-)

No, we're going a different route, Susan, but I'm sure the foliage would be gorgeous on that highway, since it runs through the mountains. We'll be taking a more southerly route through Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, missing the mountains, but there may be some pretty foliage there, too. I have an Ancestry.com account, and traced one line on my mother's side back fourteen generations (with proof for every generation) to Arthur Allen, who built a brick house in Surry County, VA near the James River in 1665 that's owned by Preservation Virginia. We'll be touring this house, also known as Bacon's Castle, because Bacon's army took it over during the rebellion. I made up a booklet for my family with each generation documented and interesting information also - it was fun to do, and everybody really appreciated it. We'll also be going to Jamestowne, which is close to the Allen house. I especially want to see the artifacts from the original fort at Jamestowne at their museum. My Daddy had an ancestor who was one of the original settlers there, so it's also personal - I'll be compiling another booklet about this line. When we go through South Carolina, I'll be gathering more information and pictures about this line of my Daddy's and also information and pictures of an old house that belonged to an ancestor of my husband - I'm also researching and writing a booklet about this interesting line of his. Butterflies and nature in general and genealogy and American history are my hobbies - they keep me busy and interested! Sherry Here is a link that might be useful: Bacon's Castle/Allen's Brick House

I think you're not supposed to mulch iris so what do I do?

Brock, if anybody is guilty of writing too much, it is I, appreciate your input on the matter. I believe you are correct, it's Chinese or Japanese roof iris aka crested iris (did some googline). I did see zone 5b somewhere which is the colder limit for them, and I definitely think there is a difference b/t 5a and 5b, but I might be able to squeak some things through anyway. Now that is distressing that they may not survive the winter. I just set them out this afternoon, new area where there is no protection, and will have to mulch (or something) for the winter and expect to lose them. There are too many similar in this class to know exactly what to expect. If they make it through the summer, I could pot a few up and bring them inside, but that defeats my purpose as I have enough already to winter inside. They look so nice with that pretty foliage. Yes, I could move some, but I've got scads more plants waiting to be set out. Yes, I agree that some, not all, mail-order retailers exaggerate the zone business because they would lose sales. A topic for another time, tired after setting out 24 plants, used my bulb planter which made things go a little faster. I think I had my tiller set to till and not cultivate, oh well, it had gotten so bad so fast, it needed the extra power, but I'm worried if I could have compromised the roots forming on the Austins I set in there ealier. They should recover.

What a thoughtful swap package. I like the insulated bag! I've used a much less glamorous one from Sam's Club to bring home frozen foods. Nice to have a bag in the trunk in case you shop one place and have to stop another before going home. Have a good picnic in the garden and enjoy the fall - after the rain leaves Texas. Karen

For me, on a picnic, I love Spam sandwiches with mayo. Fried or just cut into thick pieces from the can.

I too like fried chicken, if I were to plan a picnic, potato salad would be fine for me, the iced tea and probably some zucchini cake or banana cake?:) Some kind of fruit would be great and home grown tomatoes too. We just same as never to picnics. Husband just does not like doing things like that.

For us it's fried chicken, possibly pizza bread or a shooter's sandwich, potato salad and Waldorf salad. Other stuff is optional.

Fried chicken, potato salad, devilled eggs, pickles, slaw, homemade bread, chocolate cake, and lemonade! Oh, and my mom would have made a coconut cake and black raspberry cobbler!

lol...they used to talk about the picnics at hurst castle in ca...no simple foods service there...china, silver, and plenty of the finest foods...sure puts a twist in picnic!

we had 2 spots for picnicking we loved in san diego... one was the city park in Coronado, the other wasn't a picnic spot but so beautiful...we called it having lunch with the dolphins and seals...the navy had these critters on the side of point loma...in tanks..it was quite open and pbj, apples and drinks were our kid food of choice...that was followe by a stop to the lighthouse, and visit to the museum... back in the day, both were free...

We just did this Saturday. It was a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, some raisins, two bottled waters and chocolate candy (both water and chocolate kept cold). Simply set a beach towel down and he poured out while I made the sandwiches. It's the company that makes picnics great. I usually give a picnic basket as wedding presents (packed with the plates, flatware, napkins, S/P, etc. Stealing time away together is the most important thing for a marriage.

I had to go look up "shooter's sandwich", thanks to colleenoz. OMG! I want a piece of one of those so bad right now! I'll have to make one some day.

Here is a link that might be useful: How to make a shooter's sandwich...
