Going Out For Sunday Breakfast

Every Sunday morning my husband and I get up early and go for a long drive. Along the way we always stop for breakfast, it is our favourite meal when going out.

At most small town restaurants we find the best of breakfast foods, but for some reason at the chain restaurants the food is always poor. I hate when they serve frozen potatoes as hashbrowns, they are just little nuggets on the plate. Is it really that difficult to boil some potatoes the day before and fry them up for breakfast. All the smaller places also put fruit on the plate but not the chain restaurants.

Anyway, who else does not like those frozen hashbrowns, they are a waste of effort putting them on the plate.

I don't like those frozen hash browns either. They are usually very dry and flavorless.

We also like to go out for breakfast. It's fun to try the hole-in-the-wall joints, and their prices are often good.

We love breakfasts out. Those little square frozen potatoes are dry and tasteless. Hate them. I love real potatoes, cooked, sliced and fried. That's what we get in the little mom and pop restaurant.
Usually some cantaloupe, or at the least an orange slice on the plate.

This morning I made biscuits for breakfast again. I'm getting pretty good at them! Nice and flaky with honey or homemade freezer strawberry jam.

Toast and peanut butter, with a fruit topping like sliced oranges or apples, and a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. I'll run that under the broiler real quick. I eat supper while driving from work to my volunteer gig cleaning cat cages at the local rescue. I'll take cubed cheese, celery and carrot sticks, nuts, and fruit such as grapes, basically finger foods, and only eat while stopped at traffic lights. There's a real long one about half way there, where I can eat about half my dinner while stopped at the light. Then, I finish up once I reach my destination, and am parked in a parking spot. I sometimes wonder if people wonder why I'm eating in the Pet Smart parking lot. lol Sally

Oh YUM!!!! Know what I'am making this weekend. I use Lori's recipe. They taste great but I always seem to makea mess! Which has nothing to do with this great recipe and every thing to do with my measuring. Light & Crispy Waffles 2 eggs, separated 2 cups milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup canola or other vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans (optional) Preheat waffle maker. In a medium bowl, beat egg whites until stiff. Set aside. Put egg yolks, milk, flour, baking powder, salt, oil and vanilla extract in a large mixer bowl. Beat until smooth. Gently fold in beaten egg whites. Pour 1/2 cup batter into waffle maker. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon chopped pecans, if using. Close waffle maker and bake until golden, 2-1/2 to 3 minutes. For years, every Sunday I prepared a big breakfast for my family. It varied little from: sausage or bacon or both; homemade biscuits; fried or scrambled eggs; hash browns; gravy; and orange juice, tomato juice, or apple juice. Occasionally, we would have pancakes instead of the eggs, hash browns, and gravy, but always with homemade apple syrup, as well as maple syrup (not home made). Those were the days we could afford calories every week.

The same thing happened to me. One day I was walking in Sam's Club and the top of my foot started hurting. I did not go to the doctor right away thinking it would get better. It didn't - it got worse. I did not waste my time going to a doctor - I went straight to a podiatrist which is what I advise you to do as well. Who better is there to diagnose a foot problem than a foot doctor? Mine was a stress fracture on top of my left foot. Do you have high arches? My podiatrist said that people with high arches are prone to stress fractures in their feet. I was given the boot to wear and told to soak my foot in ice water to relieve swelling and to stay off it as much as I could. If you are given a boot everyone will ask you what happened. I felt like an a$$ saying that I was walking in sneakers in Sams Club one day and my foot suddenly started to hurt. Often times I would say that I was hang gliding and I landed hard. They would exclaim "really?!?" and then I would tell them the truth. I could tell that they were disappointed. :) It's been two years since that has happened (my stress fracture occurred right before Christmas too) and I can still sometimes feel where the fracture was. I am careful with what shoes I wear and I do not lift or drag heavy things so as not to put undue pressure on my foot.

Your Sunday mornings sound delightful! I like breakfast sometime after 10:00, so a nice ride before would be great. I never order potatoes just because you never know when they'll be those icky things. Give me grits and I'm happy (as long as they salted the water first).

So, what did you have this morning???

Had breakfast at Waffle House, about an hour ago.

scrambled cheese eggs, dry grits, crispy bacon and raisin bread.

THEIR hashbrowns must be awfully good cause lots of people order them. AND they look good as well

Go OUT for breakfast? You mean get dressed to go out...for breakfast? Oh, no. Not here. Sunday is robe and slippers; bacon and eggs, muffin, OJ, coffee; read the Sunday paper. THEN get dressed -- sometime before noon. LOL

Going out to eat bacon and eggs is like going out to have a hamburger. When I go out I want something I can't easily make as good or better at home.

Sorry I can't agree with you chisue, I think going out for breakfast is very peaceful, nice quiet time of day and very relazing. You should try it, you are missing the best part of the day just hanging out in your PJ's. haha

I enjoy going out for breakfast. I guess breakfast is probably my favorite meal anyway and often will order a breakfast when I eat out. Yes I can make it good at home but if I go out I enjoy breakfast, which I did this past Sunday morning.

I love going out for breakfast on any day except Sunday. Too crowded,screaming kids,harried waitstaff. Not for me.

I eat breakfast out often though. I don't order things I could easily do at home. I like to have things like omelettes, burritos stuffed with eggs,chili and topped with Spanish sauce, steak and eggs, pork chops and eggs, Hawaiian waffles, and other things like that. Breakfasts that I don't usually keep the ingredients on hand for and would have too much leftover if I bought them.

We are fortunate enough to have several good mom and pop places to eat at so i don't have to deal with the chain food "steamed" eggs and pre-cooked bacon stuff. We have a lot of Mexican places that serve a killer breakfast too.

There's one place I love that serves breakfast all day a bit farther away. I don't normally like "skillet" breakfasts but they have a breakfast called the "Kitchen Sink" on the menu. It is potatoes,onions,peppers,ham and cheese topped with eggs however you want them. What makes it sooooo good is the potatoes are diced teeny tiny and are brown and crispy on all sides without being hard. It's served with your choice of toast,pancakes or biscuits Gravy if you want.

I can't even finish a half order. I get mine with bacon instead of ham because I only like ham as dinner or fried really well. They always do the bacon diced and crisp before mixing it in. Yum.
