Lost a toenail.. OUCH!!

When I was cleaning at my son's place yesterday, I stubbed my toe really hard. I danced around a bit, but I had a lot to do, so I pushed through and finished my work. This morning I was surprised that it still hurt as much as it did/does. I investigated and found the whole thing is just hanging by a thread.I can peel it right back. I have a bandage on for now, until it falls off completely, but MAN, it hurts!

Thanks for the feedback. aliska - do you mean that you would plant the pack all together?? Oh no, I would never plant the pack. Maybe I misinterpreted what you said there. I do get some torn cells and soil pulling away from the roots, those could be a problem. Not too many like that but try to salvage what I can of it. I thought you were talking about packs that are split where they shouldn't be. I was also wondering if anyone knows of a good root fertilizer for this issue with annuals. Anyone have ideas? I've heard some mention here and there Superthrive, mainly in the OGR or propagation forum, but I don't know where I could get it. I've never seemed to need it. Plus I don't want to risk using too much and burning the roots. I'm certainly no expert, and I have had less than stellar results with some things. I have oversized 6 packs and use a bulb planter but it doesn't work very well in sticky clay soil that dries out easily because the plants are too crowded against compacted earth. But it's just easier and faster. And some are happy and strong anyway. The best start you can give plants outside is good loamy soil, but many many annuals thrive in poorer soils. I've started using a product called Bloom Booster, not Scott's which is only sold in the UK, will go look on the package. Miracle Gro Shake 'n Feed Bloom Booster. It shows a photo of how much per sq inch compared to a quarter, and you don't have to scratch it in like they recommend for some of those time release round pearly fertilizers. I save my Osmocote for my planters and can use it indoors. The easiest thing to do is mix in a little compost. Sprinkle some over the top when done planting; nutrients will leach down. I have a problem area that is very dry because it drains faster than the rest and an old lilac nearby sucks up water. So just today I started using my new "carrots" from Harriet Carter. They are about 5 inches long and you screw them onto a 2 litre bottle. I used a hot knife to cut out the bottoms, was a little work for 12 because the bottoms are tougher, but that way I can pour water in more easily. In addition, the air pressure keeps it flowing. If you put a cap on a gal milk jug and slit the bottom, fill with water, the jug collapses. Leave cap off. But these new things get the water where it is most needed, down in near the roots. Anyway, I was thinking I would sometimes mix some Miracle Gro in the water I'm drip irrigating with the soda bottles and "carrots". One I could not get down far enough so I got a hammer and huge screw driver and pounded it down, then turned the screw driver to widen the hole. Went right in. I'm belaboring the point and don't even know how it's going to work here because I just started. The hose won't reach so this will be easier that filling the sprinkling can and get a better soaking I hope. The annual salvias did not do well in that spot last year there whereas the same salvias planted closer to the house did much better. Next I'm going to throw some compost on there then mulch because I should have done the compost in the fall. Maybe some peat, too, tried to till it in but somebody did it for me and poured the peat really sloppy. Blah blah. I'm talking too much, kind of wound up after a long day. Certain fertilizers are recommended for certain plants. But I don't make a fetish out of it. The bottom line is you're supposed to use tomato food for clematis near a rose near lilies. I use rose food for the roses, Bloom Booster for the lilies (should scratch in some bone meal when I get around to it), and you know they're going to all mix together. Do what is reasonable but don't fuss too much. I get more done that way and learn from my mistakes. Then when I find which plants work best in certain areas, I stick with that. I'm only using annuals to fill in until I can get more perennials established. But some are so pretty I want them no matter what.

Misery loves company I guess. Same here in north central CT. My hydrangeas all have leaves turning black this afternoon so I'm guessing no flowers this year. This stinks!!! Everything was perking merrily along and wham! Most of my WS sprouts & seedlings look okay but things that were planted out appear to have taken a hit. Guess I'll cover the hydrangeas next May 11 & 12. According to the Almanac, those are the Ice Saints' or Frost Saints' days. It also says St. Pancras Day (May 12) never passes without a frost. So glad I'm reading that today instead of yesterday when I could have done something about it.

I got that horrible-looking purple, too -- makes you feel even worse seeing that! Does your job require you to do a lot of walking around? I'd make sure to have a little ice pack in a freezer, even a small bag of frozen peas to give your ankle some relief. My ankle was better within a few weeks. I agree with Marie -- if ibuprofen and ice and elevation (when you're home) don't seem to be alleviating the pain and reducing the puffiness, is there a nurse's office at your job you can go to?

The Euflexxa is, I believe, the generic for Sinvisk. That is what I had a series of 3 shots in each knee 3 years ago. I was told that if I was lucky, the shots would last 6 months. Well, I must have been really lucky, as I have not needed any more, and I am finally going down some stairs frontwards, using both feet, as most people do normally. I still do the basement stairs backwards most of the time. It may be my bifocals, but it just seems like the stairs are too long for me to do that way. Short flights, 4-5 stairs, most of the time I have no problem with. DH's uncle had both of his knees replaced many years ago (he has been gone 13 years now) and his Dr. told him the best way to go down stairs is backwards, easiest on the knees. I wish you lots of pain free days after your injections.

My husband lost a nail getting his finger caught in a window AC when taking it apart. My husband's nail was growing back under the skin. If the skin grows over the nail area and it begins to hurt, see the doctor.

I have, and you have my sympathy. I'm in the process of losing two fingernails as a result of tissue damage last winter from my Raynaud's. It's a gradual process, though, doesn't hurt like yours does. Just looks ugly.

Yikes, just the post made me hurt. You must be one tough cookie to have this happen and just move on and finish your work. Youch.

Trin: I was tough at the time, but now I'm being a baby...LOL!! I just had so much to do then, but now it's really bothering me.
MsMarion: How did you lose yours?
Alisande: I didn't know Raynaud's caused you to lose nails, but it makes sense now that I think about it. I'm glad yours doesn't hurt, though.

When I was a teenager, I stupidly crushed two middle fingers in a car door...days later, I lost both nails. As my luck goes, I was due to start taking typing tests, etc. for my first job after graduating from high school.

Susan, I know how terribly tender and sore that toe must feel...you poor thing. :(

I never have but my MIL got her finger caught in the door of our truck door once. She had taken 5 of the grandkids to the movies for the afternoon. She never said a thing until much later that night. I noticed as we were cleaning up the kitchen. Of course, this is the woman who could feel no pain it seemed, she amazed me. I don't recall if she ever saw the doctor, but her nail lady gave her some real grief!

Just relax and keep your feet up- I know that must hurt!

Um, I'm working on loosing one right now. About 2 weeks ago I tried to rip of my big toe nail..not wearing proper shoes and lifting heavy big boxes...I apparently was closer to the box than I thought...

Today is the first day I've put on a sneaker. I'm sure I'll loose it..right now it's got the scabby bit up under the nail. I don't know how far back I actually pulled it off the nail bed....I figure I'll just hope that it doesn't all come off and will grow out just fine..

IT HURT LIKE A MOTHER BEEPER!!!!!! And I had to work for 3 more hours with it wrapped in a tissue...and the next week was sooo uncomfortable.

So I can say I feel your pain!

Yeah, I won't be wearing shoes for a while... it's a good thing it's sandal weather. It hurts for the bed sheet to brush against it.

Shell, I just wish there was something I could do for it, but I guess not...

Granlan, how did you end up doing on that typing test? I can't imagine how hard it was.

Trish, your MIL is the total opposite of mine!

Terri, my entire nail is off down to the base, and it's only hanging on by a bit of skin at the side. But I was kind of rushing, so I think I was careless. Boy, do we pay for these mistakes.

Ick..I just removed the polish on my toes. I did the pedicure the day before I was stupid...LOL And it was a french tip so I could see the bruise...but ugh....it's really bluish green and the other is nice and pink like it should be. I'm putting on pink polish now. LOL

Oh I know the first few nights I had two bandaids on it. And maybe the third night I stuck on a pedicure bootie..LOL

I wonder if it will heal faster for you though since the nail is basically gone. I think that was the problem with mine, the nail was still "attached" for the most part. I soaked it alot and let it bake in the sun. LOL

As much as it would make me squimish..I'd take some "cleaned" manicure scissors and snip it off if I was in your place.

I would go to a doc or the ER and have that thing cut off. It is not going to reattach itself. I would think it would be impossible to wear shoes and socks for a long time.

Can't see that I have a funky toenail now...Cute pink toes with a flower sticker.

Yeah my Croc Flip Flops are what got me into this mess and what I've been living in every moment.

Thank goodness I have 3 pairs!
