Good afternoon, since it's not morning anymore...

I have one day off, today. Been lounging around in my pjs since I got up this morning. I'm about to jump in the shower and go to the capital city, go shopping and maybe see Mamma Mia, alone. I don't really like going to movies alone but Alex is the only one home today and I know he's not gonna watch this movie or go shopping with me afterwards. At least it will be the early movie and hopefully, not too many people there.

We're having a belated going away party for someone tomorrow at work so I'm picking something up from a few of us. I'm going to check out Pier One. I love that store.

Coming home and watering the garden, which is parched even though I soaked it the other day when I was off (Thursday). My potted plants are really suffering from the high heat this past week. The forecast calls for rain today and the next four or five days but it sure doesn't look like it's going to rain. My poor potted petunias are nearly dead. I may do some weed pulling too, I still have one of the flower beds to tackle.

No plans. I got up and showered, had brunch and took all my pills. I may do some gardening today. I need to water my vegetable garden, and some of the weeds are choking out my flowers. My petunias in containers are looking pretty bad. I'd like to see both Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight, but no one wants to go with me. Blah on them!

Nothing, per usual for me.
Haven't decided on where I'll have lunch.
Really want to see Mama Mia, but will wait until the middle of the week.

You haven't said whether there is anything there at present, so I am assuming not. As you are planting in a long narrow strip, you will need some shrubs for the "back bone" of your garden--somethings that will provide some interest while your perennials are growing and before they bloom. I also imagine that this is a side of your home--generally side plantings require some height to offset the long and narrow aspect of the space. A mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs is also desireable so that you continue to have some interest in winter. You don't have to do this all at once, but you should consider purchasing a few shrubs each year. Look for an upright/columnar evergreen, maybe some boxwood, hydranga should do well with this exposure, as long as it is well watered, and will give you blooms as well. There are also some roses that will do ok with this amount of sun. Rose of Sharon (not a rose) is a lovely arching shrub with beautiful blooms; magnolia is another possibility. For perennials, look at coneflower, monarda, as well as those listed above.

Hi Y'all! I tried to go back to sleep early this a.m. after being up for a couple of hours and it was hard to sleep because there was so much thunder and lightning. Then, when I was finally dozing off, the weather radio went off TWICE within about a 30-minute time frame. The first time was to tell me that G.M.'s county was under a Flash Flood Warning. The second time was to tell me that our county was under a flash flood warning. I did finally fall back asleep and get about 3 more hours of sleep. Randy, I remember thinking to myself in January or February that I hoped we'd have lots of thunderstorms this year because I love falling asleep or waking up to the sound of a good rainstorm, and I REALLY missed that during the drought. What a fool I was!!!! Today what I am really missing is heat and sunshine...and sleep! Go ahead and complain about the lack of sunshine and heat whenever you want. You're sure to get a lot of agreement from many of us that we want some heat and sunshine too. Courtney, Do you have a space heater? If you have one that blows warm air, you can speed up the drying of your concrete with it. That is, assuming the rain isn't pouring there like it has been here. Right now, I am on a new calendar and a new clock, different from the one we used for so many years. DH's hours have always been 'odd' because police work is not an 8 to 5 type thing, but the hours have been horrible since his most recent promotion. He's hardly had any days off, but it is finally beginning to settle down a little. However, between him getting up in the middle of the night to go to work, and our son working 24 hours on/48 hours off, our regular routine has disintegrated and no one around here is getting the right amount of sleep. Everyone is also on a different meal schedule. It has been crazy. AND, whenever we have a time when we are all three at home (4 counting son's girlfriend who is here at the house a lot) and we are about to eat a meal together, the fire pagers go off EVERY SINGLE TIME. It is uncanny. In between rain showers I run outside and pull weeds. At least the weeds come up out of the wet ground more easily than they otherwise would. Oh, Courtney, flip flop tan lines! I haven't had those in so long since our snakes and scorpions scare me too much for me to wear flip flops! Merryheart, My rain gauges do that too and I suspect it has something to do with the angle at which the rain falls or the angle at which one of the gauges is leaning. The rain gauge that is nailed to a fence post 3' above the ground always has a slightly higher reading than the one that is stuck into the ground. I think the one stuck in the ground tends to lean over a little now and then, maybe, and not catch quite as much rain. We are having 1.5" of rain a day.....1.5 inches on Thursday, 1.5 inches on Saturday (I emptied the gauge at bedtime) and 1.5 inches so far today. You have had so much more rain than us! It is coming in waves here as it rains a little, stops, rains some more, then stops again. I think it is going to be a very long and soggy day. I have been hearing the Carter County street maintenance guys on the scanner as well as some of the Carter County fire departments. It sounds like they had to close and barricade some roads in your county to keep people from driving through high water. I have also heard them discussing the removal of "sand bars" washed into some roads. It is pretty quiet here, except for one reported 'water leak' at an intersection in town. I find it hard to believe there is a water leak, but think that maybe there is a backed up storm gutter or something. My day will include an excursion to Costco. I saved up my pennies for a long time to buy a new TV, and bought it on Thursday. Then Saturday the new Costco coupon booklet arrived in the mail. That same set will be $300 cheaper on Jan. 5th. We hadn't set it up yet, so... I will take my receipt to customer service and see if I'll have to physically bring it back, return it and buy the same thing again next week, or if they will honor the coupon without me doing all that. I've had good experiences with them, so I hope for the best. (The TV is a huge blessing, and I promise not to complain even if the discount becomes a hassle.) It's cool but sunny. I may be forced to check out Ross too, 'cause on Tuesday there is a 10% discount if you're 55 or older.

Finishing morning coffee in the afternoon

During the work week, I sit here on my computer with my first coffee: hot, strong and black. Then I make another for work in my Contigo travel mug from Costco. I <3 that mug! It will either be another hot, strong, black coffee or a "bullet proof" coffee (butter, coconut oil, heavy whipping cream and a small splash of mocha flavouring). It stays hot for hours so I don't have to drink it quickly before it cools down. When I get home from work, I make another strong coffee, but I top with with a big dallop of espresso flavoured whipped cream! YUM! If I drink cold coffee, it has to be an iced coffee. I don't like cold coffee by itself.

Good afternoon Kath and the rest of you.

We've been lazy today. Yesterday Jammer mowed the yard and I cleaned the front porch and moved some plants around. So we aren't doing any work today! We went out for breakfast, stopped by the grocery store to pick up some larger items that I didn't want to have to deal with on my own. Then we came home and sat on the porch, admiring our manicured lawn. My oldest DS stopped by to visit for awhile. Then Jammer and I came in to watch tv and nap. Yep, a lazy day!

I plan to get a couple of friends to go see Mamma Mia with me this week. I bought the soundtrack and have been enjoying it when I am in my car.

Well, I did a load of laundry, helped Jerry empty the van with the bikes and stuff he got from our Tulsa house yesterday, went for a bike ride, another load of laundry, grocery shopping, hose ends and y's and such picked up at the hardware store to set up soaker hoses while I am gone, and still need to sew a sleeping bag liner.

All in all, a busy day.

Kath, I guess, I am picking up the slack for you, LOL, hope you enjoy the movie.

I wanna see it too someday.

I am busy packing, doing laundry and more packing. Headed to the airport later this afternoon to fly to MN to visit with Hayjud. Still need to take a shower and get dressed for the trip.

Mike can deal with the house while I am gone. I am sure the housework will be waiting for me when I return but I don't care.

I was very excited that DH decided he wanted to go to the outdoor church service at Blue Lake park around the corner. It was really nice, a church service at a park in the woods on a lake. He thinks he may want to start going to this church now! YEA! We are grilling chicken and then I will work on my pond a bit and as usual....watch birds!

I didn't get up til almost 9 this morning.Dh has been letting me sleep in ever since my surgery>He hears me get up a few times during the night ,so he thinks i need to rest more.

I didn't even get in the shower til almost noon,as i lingered over the newspaper,which i do every sunday.

Don't plan on doing anything much,maybe iron a few pieces of clothing,and perhaps work on my cross stitch some.

Have no idea what we are doing for dinner,probably going to get Chinese.

Nita, have a good trip and say hi to everyone for me!

Went to see the movie first. What a fun movie! Made me want to get up and dance, and I don't even dance! LOL! I was surprised that there were so many men in there too. Was also surprised that the back lot near the theater (a really small one) was packed at 2 pm. Everyone out there was buying Mamma Mia tickets and I almost didn't go then. But the theater wasn't packed but did have a lot more people than normal for that time of day. I can't wait to take Lauren when I'm off at the end of the week.

Got the gift I was going to get and then picked up dinner for me and Alex, he wanted chicken strips and I wanted sushi. I love the nearby sushi place, they have a super dragon roll that I'm addicted to: avacado, raw fish, smoked eel, asperagus and tempura battered shrimp and covered in fish eggs and a special sauce. It's sooo good. I bought two since there was a 20% off coupon in the paper that I clipped. Eating the other one for breakfast in the morning.

Alex told me after I got home that he had to medicate Luther, we had a big storm come through for about an hour, he said and Luther was "flipping out". Poor dog. I'm kinda glad it rained, though, everyone's grass is getting brown and now I don't have to water the garden.

Hope everyone had a good day. I now have to go do some laundry and get the gift ready for tomorrow. I may go sit out in the sunroom and read. Much more fun than pulling weeds!

Kathy, you can cut your petunias (and other plants) off, about 3" above the ground, and they should come back even better, when the weather cools down.

Good afternoon(evening), now!

I had a wonderful second visit with Ed and Wes is now making a venison stew in the Dutch oven outside. It's smelling great.

As for the petunias...sometimes the rootballs get so dried out that regular watering won't re-hydrate them. If you'll take a big bucket, or tub, of water, and soak your petunia pots in it, it will help them immensely. The tub should be big enough to hold the entire pot and soil underwater.

Leave the pot submerged in the bucket for several hours; I've left mine overnight. The rootball may float up at first if it's totally dry. That's okay; it will sink once it gets thoroughly wet. The water will bubble and burble and finally get the entire rootball damped. That will perk them right up.

I learned this trick when trying to container garden in the high temperatures at Travis AFB, in California.

Good evening. I had a busy day. I went to a wedding shower an hour away. I drove there with my daughter and a friend from our old neighborhood. We had a nice visit in the car.

Tonight DH cooked and invited his mother. She was so negative tonight, it was really getting on my nerves. Then there was a little tension in the house, because my son had a problem with his IPhone and thought he'd broken it. There was a problem, and it took him and DH all night to fix it.

All is good right now. Tomorrow I go back to work after being on vacation for three weeks. I hope I get up ok, in the morning!
