A sink question.

My porcelain kitchen sink is only about 3 yrs old but somehow it his got chipped on the bottom. Its indented, so it has brown spots all over the bottom. I tried those rubber mats but they don't work too well. Do you know of a way to fix it without having to buy a new sink? Some sort of cover up or patch maybe? Its a double sink, the other side is fine

I have seen the patch kits. Maybe they have improved with time, but I always thought they did look like a cheesy coverup.
I had my bathtub refinished and it came out beautiful.
It was rusty, pitted, you name it....
I would probably first call a refinishing company in your area and ask them what to do. They should have some great ideas.

Our white double sink had three chips in it for years before our kitchen remodel last year. Every few months I would lay papertowels on the bottom of the sink and spray with a bleach and water solution and let it sit overnight. It looked pretty good the next morning. That evening I would brush some white porcelain epoxy paint on the chips and let it dry overnight.

To be sure family members knew I had just painted the sink, I would balance the little paint bottle on top of the faucet using a small amount of museum putty. :-)

Last year, there was Ecoli episode in CA and the culprit were wild pigs which has visited the spinach patch. The interesting thing was that the ecoli was not on the spinach it was inside the spinach. The pigs contaminated the soil and the water was as absorbed by the spinach roots and the bacteria was inside the leaves.. So no amount of surface rinsing would have removed or killed the Ecoli. Thankfully, it was a small episode that was quickly contained. The triple washed baby spinach salad bags were quickly pulled from the shelves. Since I first posted, we just finished the countertop and sink install. I have hole for 1 soap dispenser at the sink and plan to keep a spray bottle of alcohol or bleach solution for disinfecting. I have the same sink as cottonpenny and plan to use the sink bowl as the rinse bowl after a cleaning disinfecting routine.

Hi Melissa, I'm planning to get the Kohler SmartDivide with a 60/40 because to me it is the best of both worlds. The divider in the center of it is much lower than standard. So if you put a large skillet in it, the handle can easily lay over the divider. Typically as I prepare dinner, I'm throwing salad fixings in the small, disposal side, and stacking and/or rinsing dishes etc. in the large side. During cleanup, we repeat the process, so I just don't know how we'd do this with a single bowl. If you do a search on here, you'll see a few people have this sink. I have the fireclay clean up sink on the perimeter and the stainless undermount in the island for the prep sink. They are close enough I can turn and reach the other sink. The KD suggested the stainless. I considered other materials, but I liked the size of this one the best. The stainless sink is not a shiny finish. And the appliances are stainless, so it's not the only stainless in the kitchen.

Consider sink depth as well. If for example you choose a deeper sink, after the p-trap has been installed you may not have much space remaining under your sink for things such as a more full sized pull out garbage. There will be many options still available that fit within tighter spaces although those options are generally smaller and more applicable for green bin type disposal. At the end of the day it's a trade off. It may not even be a worthwhile trade off. It will likely depend on the size of your kitchen and/or your specific needs. Also, I figure I would point out that there are sinks on the market that offer custom division. So basically, you can choose to divide or not divide the sink as you please. That sort of functionality can be very useful. The downside of course with anything more unique is cost, as those sinks are likely to always be expensive. That being said, I do not know your budget or how much you may be willing to spend in exchange for functionality like that so it may be worth your consideration..

There are a lot of things on the market for porcelain touch-ups...some cheap and easy and others more costly and complicated.

I bought something like at the link below, for some chips on my range and it has held up well. I think I got it at a Hardware store.

That is exactly what I used Sue. It's cheap and does a nice job. We probably used the one bottle for at least 10 years.

No help here except to say when/if you replace it get a molded sink. It is the same all the way through and will not lose it's shine. You may have to spray it with Clorox Clean up once a month. It's the best sink I have found.

What exactly is a "molded sink"? Maybe mine isn't even porcelain. That's what I think it looks like anyway. It has a high lip.... which I hate because the water gathers up and lays there rather then falling into the sink.
The sink is white all through, is that a molded sink?
