1 basin sink owners--how do you scrape dishes while washing them?
Comments (18)For us, I LOVE my big, single Rohl farmhouse sink--we scrape almost everything into the disposal, and then it goes right into the DW. I cook for 10-12 people two to three times a week, so I'm used to LOTS of dishes/pans. On a big cooking night, I know it's going to be a two-load night. First load (right after scraping) is all the silverware/plates/glasses and anything small. Second load before bed is the big pots/pans/etc. Cookie sheets (which are usually almost spotless--thank you, Parchment Paper inventor!!), I just wash by hand...AND they fit in my sink without spray going all over. I guess if you're one of those people who has to have ALL the dishes done and out of the way PRONTO, this system may not work for you. Oh, and we do use a black drainboard & rack that was only supposed to occasionally be out, but now is ALWAYS out just to the left of the big sink. So anything that has to get handwashed dries in there. My mom is MORTIFIED that we have that out--she hates our single sink for that reason and just got herself a big, deep double sink. And she's thrilled. So don't hate yourself if you really do want a double sink--there are positives and negatives to both! You have cobwebs...hee-hee!! ;-) A sponge-mop is great for high walls! * See if you can locate one with a head that screws onto a broom-threaded pole tip. * You can then screw the mop-head onto your extendable painter's-pole and wash away! You are correct on washing...start the suds from bottom-UP. This way, any dirt/cleaning-solution just runs down into more cleaner. If you need to lightly rinse, do this from TOP-down. Get a good, stiff, extendable painters-pole! It can help minimize ladder-use. In the summer, use it for squeegee-ing those windows! >>> If you have smooth ceilings, or an edge scraped off a popcorn ceiling, the cut-in roller-pads can help. You can just stand on the floor and cut-in a ceiling 15' high! >>> Don't leave a heavy ridge at the bottom of the pad's path...feather-it down to a hazy edge. >>> If some of your vertical INSIDE corners are rough, run a little bead of painter's-caulk all the way up/down, and tool it smooth with a wet finger. >>> Same applies to wall/ceiling joints, and trim-to-wall edges. Comments (14)Assuming all one countertop with prep and cleanup, If you can have a change in countertop surface, that would make a demarcation between the two--a butcherblock area for the prep perhaps? or a marble inset in a laminate countertop? or a height change? or a color change? or a pull-out breadboard for prep? Simplest solution: use a removable plastic dishpan or two. Fill with dirty dishes, then set elsewhere. On a chair? In the next room? On the floor? You can move them back into position once you're ready to add water and work with them, and without handling the dirty dishes twice before washing. Meanwhile, they're away from that sink that you just scrubbed out so it could receive the veg, or whatever. --Florantha, who lived in an 8 x 10 corridor kitchen for 40 years. P.S. I understand the need to get this pile out of the sink and drainer before you begin another task. _Visually_ it's important to me--less line-of-sight distraction while I'm thinking about that next task. I'm not making fun of you; the yuck and cleanliness issues are important to me also. In my old kitchen I did a lot of dishwashing BEFORE food prep and the meal. And with a two-basin sink, I was able to keep sudsy water on one side of sink while the veg was soaking in the other side so that used items went into the dishwater immediately. I also liked putting the cleaned fresh veg into bowls or such so that the countertop was not a cleanliness issue, preventing a second rinsing. If someone needed to dump the dregs of a coffee cup or whatever, they could just wait OR just dump it into the compost bin OR walk elsewhere to dump. Comments (22)This was one thing that I did not change when we redid the kitchen -- the location of the sink and cooktop. The dishwasher is to the left of the sink, there's about 24" of countertop "prep" space to the right of the sink, and then the cooktop. (I'd prefer there to be closer to 36" of countertop space between the sink and cooktop, as this is the primary prep space, but that's not an option in this kitchen.) I like having the sink and cooktop on the same run together like this. We had Thanksgiving at my SIL's house, and her sink and cooktop are across the aisle from each other. I don't like having to move things across the floor from one to the other. There's plenty of other spaces that could be used for prep, but that space between the sink and cooktop -- regardless of left or right -- is the key for me....See MoreCloud Swift
