Price of corn on the cob!

The other day it was 6 ears for $2.00.
Few days later 5 ears for $4.99!
No thanks.

Fresh Market and Publix here has corn on the cob 10 for $3.00

We visited one of our local farms that has the best corn and the price was $5.50 for 13 ears....We only get it from them, once or twice a year, just too expensive....To tell you how good it is, my daughter lives in Reno and asked if I'd send a dozen...She said the corn out there is terrible.....

I'm glad your pup is OK Shaun. I accidentally fed corn to one of mine the other day. While cutting some off the cob for a new recipe a lot wound up on the floor so I let her eat it. I got the finger wagged in my face for letting her eat corn with her digestive issues. At least I didn't drop the cob. LOL Back to corn... It is so cheap and so sweet in FL right now that I went looking for a different way to prepare it. I found a recipe that I had saved from the guy who won Rachael Ray's so you think you can cook contest last year. I liked it alot. I completely forgot to add the butter at the end but I can say that it was real tasty even without the butter. I just finished the leftovers. Yum! Carmelized corn Pete from Rachel Ray 3 tablespoons EVOO Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 to 5 ears (2 cups) fresh corn, cut off cob Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 shallots, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 5 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped 1/2 cup dry white wine (preferably Sauvignon Blanc) 2 tablespoons butter Heat 1 tablespoon EVOO in a large skillet over high heat. Add corn, a good pinch of salt and 2 to 3 turns freshly ground pepper. Toss corn to coat lightly with EVOO and cook until slightly browned and caramelized, approximately 2-3 minutes. Lower heat under corn to medium-high. Add remaining 2 tablespoons EVOO to the pan along with the shallots, garlic, 5 tablespoons parsley, thyme and chives. Re-season with salt and pepper, give everything a toss and cook until the shallots are translucent. Deglaze the pan with the white wine, scraping bottom of pan to pull up any brown bits. Cook for 1 minute. Cut butter into small chunks and scatter over corn. Cook till wine is reduced by half

When I had braces I started cutting my corn off the cob, and have never gone back. My kids do the same (even without braces)... But if I were eating it on the cob it would be the same as cynic. LOL. Also no added condiments. If it is fresh, it's sweetness and firmness stands on its own. (Please don't overcook it!) No local corn around here for a while yet.... but it has shown up in the grocery stores and now I want some.

I use a trick I learned from Carol (readinglady) here several years back - a very sharp knife and an angel food or bundt cake pan. Stick the end of the ear in the hole in the center and slice down each side. The corn collects in the pan. I have tried various forms of removers over the years and this works the best by far. No cut fingers and the most corn off the cob from the mandoline type strippers. The circular ring cutters didn't fit around half my ears of corn so it quickly got returned. Dave

I live in Iowa......boy do they know corn here! Originally from New Jersey, my father's side was Dutch heritage, who knew all about saving all the bits and pieces that Iowans tossed to the pigs. Iowans don't know scrapple nor head cheese. Even the Dutch in Iowa, of which there are lots and lots, don't know that stuff. There's always more corn in the field and another hog out there eating it. What corn stock is really is the bits of corn left on the cob after you cut the kernels off for freezing, boiled up and cooked down. Won't work so well with the cobs left from eating the corn off the cob with your teeth, because people do a better job of removing the kernels. When I cut the corn off the cob I always run the back side of my knife down the cob to get the germ of the kernel out and into the dish with the corn. Not much left on that cob at all....and the resulting broth tasted strongly of cob. Suit yourself, I know someone who saves the skins when canning tomatoes to boil up for broth. I think I get better flavor from an additional ear of corn and one more tomato, and it's a better use of my time and energy. But I know that mid-westerners feel that way about scrapple, headcheese and my beloved Taylor's Pork Roll....eww throw those nasty bits away....have another pork chop!

DD bought some at the commisary yesterday and bar b qued it last night. So good. It was really young and very tender and sweet.

Seems to be about 50 cents an ear here. I bought two ears yesterday at Whole Foods (not organic). One was bi-color and very good and the other was white and not so good. I need to drive over to Jersey and get some good fresh corn.

Last week Marsh grocery had it $ .10 an ear. Good deal! It was really tasty too.

Farmers Market in my town has it 65 cents an ear. Bi-color, very sweet and tender.

It has been 20 cents an ear; yesterday 40 cents. Good both times. It was truly Sweet Corn, not what my mom called Cow Corn (animal fodder).

Safeway had it 8/$2.... Brentwood corn. Small white kernels.
Farmer's market has organic...$.75 / ea or 3 /$2.00.
I don't think so.

Corn season is just starting here (still a bit early but starting to see it). $5.00 a dozen today at the farmers market, or 50 cents a cob. I have paid up to 7 bucks for a bakers dozen, some years are more expensive than others.

I prefer peaches and cream myself, I find it more tender. I had some today, very small cobs but the kernels weren't young, organic, a light yellow. It was fine, but not exceptional - but it was a new early variety they were trying.

I froze corn last year using a recipe on the internet for baking cut kernels with butter and cream. Bleh. After freezing, tasted like old corn bread. So now, we will just enjoy it on the cob in season as often as we can.

Our local corn isn't ready yet, but we have had California for a while....anywhere from .33 to .50 an ear.I have lotsa squash in my garden.... and two very sweet volunteer cherry tomatoes. It is coming along...slowly.

Our local corn won't be ready, one place said middle of July but I am waiting for another local place when their corn comes out to buy from them.

I did buy some corn on the cob earlier and its California corn and it was 88 cents a cob.

That local place that will be ready middle of july they said is very popular, in fact at one time all they grew was corn on the cob.

I used to see all the time rv's pull into their parking lot and buy up their corn to take with them to eat on their trip.

There are so many that moved away and miss it so much and so they come and must go and buy up. Or beg where they are staying to buy some corn to eat for meals.

It really irks me when people open up the husks and leaves them to dry out and what a huge waste and also money for the businesses when people do that.

Corn on the cob used to be so cheap, at one time I could live on it for lunches and suppers, cheap meals then but now. ouch, can't buy what you all pay for.

I saw it at Walmart this afternoon for 28 cents an ear. It looked picked over, though, so I didn't buy any. With all the rain we've had--steady for the last 3-4 weeks--I don't know what the condition of the local corn is, or if anybody can get into the fields to pick it.

Reports are that all this rain really has hurt the farmers.

Free here..Hubbys work always plants a corn field and lets their employees get as much as they want. We usually end up with enough to put in the freezer.

Corn right off the local farm on route 9 in central NJ is $5 a dozen. Our Wegmans with local corn varies from 3 ears or 4 ears for $1.00.
