Back from Grand Canyon

My husband and I spent last week at the Grand Canyon. We did lots of walking and I took LOTS of pictures. The highlight of our trip was taking a helicopter ride Friday. We LOVED IT!

Neat!! Where did you stay, did you tent or rent a cabin/cottage or stay in a hotel/inn? We are thinking of one day going to Las Vegas and I would love to drive to the Grand Canyon.

bnice--If you want to stay near Grand Canyon take a look at the Grand Hotel in the village of Tasayon (not sure of sp)its right outside the entrance to Grand Canyon. Cute little village and there are also other hotels--I think a Holiday Inn across the street.We had reservations at the El Tovar in the park and arrived 1 day early so we had to stay at the Grand Hotel and it was nice. big lobby--hunting lodge look. Sedona was charming, picturesque, but the drive in and out are interesting. Other than that --the food was good, artsy craftsy shops. I agree with Devorah, Flagstaff was interesting but not memorable. My son lives in the Phoenix area so we visit Arizona often. You can check to see if there are Indian sites you can visit, we have done that and some are interesting. No question, Grand Canyon is the place to spend some time. there are paths, shuttle buses if you don't want to walk. Places to just sit and look at the view. We enjoyed staying at the El Tovar, we are trying to stay at the National park lodges one by one and you do have to book over a year ahead. My favorite is the Ahwanee in Yosemite NP. wow!

If you really want to experience the Grand Canyon you could do what a coworker did. He started on one side, ran down, then ran up the other side. Once there, the group thought maybe doing the reverse as they intended might not be a great idea since one of the guys had a cold. They found someone willing to give them a ride back to the other side but then discovered it would be a four hour drive. So they decided they might as well run back. So they did. They had started the trip at about 1 AM (lighting their way with head lamps) and figured on 13 hours. Took more like 16. Actually, I do not recommend this at all! lol Among other reasons - the park rangers, apparently, really frown on this running down and up and down and up adventure.

Glad I'm not the only one inspired by these grand places! Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands are also places I go to every single chance I have. For lovers of cactus and succulents, it's a dream come true - seeing our beloved plants in their native environment. Loving this!!!

casey..if you go to las vegas, think of going to the north rim of the grand canyon. it's really a fantasic "2" for the price of one...you take I15 thru utah then cut off at zion nat park...i'm not quite sure where but brice canyon is along the way...less crowds, too...the only problem is timing. the north rim gets lots of snow, so the road closes in deep winter.

Beautiful pictures; awesome scenery. Hi there to you and your dh. I don't think I've ever "seen" you before.
I'll bet it was breath taking in person. Glad you're back safely.

We were there a week ago, it is breath taking. We took the train from Williams there for a day trip. I also want to know where you stayed I want to stay at that lodge there. If you are in Vegas I think you can go to the north side at the Indian reservation and go on the Sky Walk~~it is a bit over 100 miles I think. I want to do that next and maybe a short 3 day trip down the river, the helo you down to the GC floor for that:)

We just stayed at motels. The first night we stayed in Flagstaff after getting off the Amtrak and the rest of the week we stayed in Williams and then back to Flagstaff Friday night to be near the train station as we had to get up early to catch our train home Saturday. We spent all but one day at the Grand Canyon doing lots of walking, viewing and picture taking.
Wednesday we drove to Sedona. It is a beautiful place. We shopped around there a while and ate at the Oaxaca Restaurant a really neat Mexican restaurant. We thought about driving farther south to see some sororo cactus but decided it was too far and would be too hot.
We were going to take a Jeep tour Thursday but it turned out not to be what we expected so we spent the money for the helicopter ride instead and I'm glad we did. It was AWESOME.
We also watched the IMAX. It was the same one we saw with our kids when we were there 20 some years ago but it was still very very good.
The weather was hot there but I enjoyed not having the humidity that we have here at home. The evenings would cool off and it was very pleasant then. We wanted to catch the sunset at the Canyon but both nights that we were there it was too cloudy.

Cherbo, we stayed in Flag @ the Embassy Suites and did day trips to Sedona, Jerome and the Grand Canyon I think it was just the week before your trip. How was the Amtrak trip we saw that it drops right off in downtown Flag. Did you go downtown there??? We ate every nite in downtown Flag KEWL shops too. When we were at the GC it was a cool day not cold but not hot.
