Back from Grand Canyon

My husband and I spent last week at the Grand Canyon. We did lots of walking and I took LOTS of pictures. The highlight of our trip was taking a helicopter ride Friday. We LOVED IT!

Neat!! Where did you stay, did you tent or rent a cabin/cottage or stay in a hotel/inn? We are thinking of one day going to Las Vegas and I would love to drive to the Grand Canyon.

Cathy, if you want a feeling of what a massive piece of sculpture it is, you won't get close to Crazy Horse, they are still working and so there is a "demolition zone". You can get much closer to the faces at Rushmore. Plus, Rushmore is a National Park and Crazy Horse is administered by a non-profit organization. That means no government money goes into Crazy Horse, so it's going slowly. Crazy Horse was a hero to his people, caring for the ill and elderly, protecting the children, and he died from a knife in his back, ostensibly from a soldier at the fort where he went to talk about treaties between the U.S. Government and the Lakota. The faces on Rushmore, though, were national figures, not simply ethnic ones. Each has its own history and significance. Rushmore, though, has historical significance for everyone, not just the Native Americans. And walking down that walk of flags, with a flag from every state, is very cool! Annie

From Medieval Dungeon to Grand Canyon!

When we purchased our retirement home the large fireplace in the living room was dark gray/black stone with dark gray grout, ugh! The mantle is oak and we kept it that way. It reminded me of a medieval dungeon, very depressing! So I changed it to the colors of the Grand Canyon. It took me a long time to select the colors but I purchased 9 different quarts of paint before I selected the 5 I was going to use. I first dusted and brushed the stone, then I primed the entire fireplace with Kilz primer in white. I selected 5 colors (Miami Peach, Indian Cloth, Canyonland, Sunshine, and Santana) from the Behr Masonry, Stucco & Brick paint line. I sponged on the paint colors individually at random and used an artists brush to paint the grout White Onyx from the same line. This was time consuming because we only had weekends to work on the fireplace. And the grout needed two coats of paint because it was so dark. I wish I had pictures to share. And I love the fireplace now! It blends in well with the rest of the house and is no longer dark and menacing! I did nothing else to the fireplace. I hope this saves someone some time and gives you the courage to try your hands on any projects. I knew nothing about how to achieve what I saw in my head, but I asked questions here and at home improvement stores. I knew that if I had this picture in my head, I could find the information I needed. Now I'm looking around for more projects to work on, much to the dismay of my DH!

bnice--If you want to stay near Grand Canyon take a look at the Grand Hotel in the village of Tasayon (not sure of sp)its right outside the entrance to Grand Canyon. Cute little village and there are also other hotels--I think a Holiday Inn across the street.We had reservations at the El Tovar in the park and arrived 1 day early so we had to stay at the Grand Hotel and it was nice. big lobby--hunting lodge look. Sedona was charming, picturesque, but the drive in and out are interesting. Other than that --the food was good, artsy craftsy shops. I agree with Devorah, Flagstaff was interesting but not memorable. My son lives in the Phoenix area so we visit Arizona often. You can check to see if there are Indian sites you can visit, we have done that and some are interesting. No question, Grand Canyon is the place to spend some time. there are paths, shuttle buses if you don't want to walk. Places to just sit and look at the view. We enjoyed staying at the El Tovar, we are trying to stay at the National park lodges one by one and you do have to book over a year ahead. My favorite is the Ahwanee in Yosemite NP. wow!

Grand Canyon - What a hoot! I was there once. We were taking my young children on a camping trip "out west" and included the Grand Canyon. That was back in the '70s but I remember the scenes like it was yesterday. I'm going back if I get the chance. The best views are from the south rim and I suspect that is where you are headed. The north rim is less crowded, but very much out of the way. On the north side, make sure that you have plenty of gasoline for the round trip in and out, and do not attemp if your car is not in tip-top running order. Check the spare tire - is it properly inflated and holding air? Take plenty of water and some for the vehicle too. The water is more important than food. Make sure that your cameras are in working order - we want pictures!!! if you more than one camera, take along an extra for a spare. Hopefully, your tain ride will travel alongside the Colorado River as it tumbles out the west side of the Rockies. Glenwood canyon (of the Colorado River) is unforgetable. Its a place that you will want to stop and tarry for a few minutes - a great place to picnic - but you will be on the train so make sure you are in position to take in the view. The train will pass through this canyon all too soon. The tracks cross the river several times as it switches from one side of the stream to the other. I believe that the Park Service now restricts auto traffic along the west part of the view sites. However, a shuttle is available. You can get off the shuttle at points of your selection and get back on another shuttle as long as those run during the day. If you plan to take a mule ride to the bottom and back, check first about weight limitations. When I was there, the operators of these mule trains resticted the load to 150 lbs per animal including the person and his gear. I am certain that you will learn about many features of this canyon while you are there - just reading all the signs is an education. Be prepared to meet people of other lands; try to be a good American ambasador. We camped at the next town s outh of the canyon and the tent site next to ours contained a trio of 20 somethings: 1 guy and 2 gals and 1 tent. It turns out the guy was a Dutch Police Officer. i got to know him when he inquired of about speed limits, customs, etc. he was wondering about his rented car. It had lost some of its power and he was concerned there was something wrong with it, and then I reminded hin that he was at 9000 ft elevation and that little Ford 4 cylinder was down to 1/2 to 2/3 of its sea level power, and it didn't have a lot to begin with. Being from Holland, he never experienced this loss of power in his police vehicles.

casey..if you go to las vegas, think of going to the north rim of the grand canyon. it's really a fantasic "2" for the price of one...you take I15 thru utah then cut off at zion nat park...i'm not quite sure where but brice canyon is along the way...less crowds, too...the only problem is timing. the north rim gets lots of snow, so the road closes in deep winter.

We were there a week ago, it is breath taking. We took the train from Williams there for a day trip. I also want to know where you stayed I want to stay at that lodge there. If you are in Vegas I think you can go to the north side at the Indian reservation and go on the Sky Walk~~it is a bit over 100 miles I think. I want to do that next and maybe a short 3 day trip down the river, the helo you down to the GC floor for that:)

We just stayed at motels. The first night we stayed in Flagstaff after getting off the Amtrak and the rest of the week we stayed in Williams and then back to Flagstaff Friday night to be near the train station as we had to get up early to catch our train home Saturday. We spent all but one day at the Grand Canyon doing lots of walking, viewing and picture taking.
Wednesday we drove to Sedona. It is a beautiful place. We shopped around there a while and ate at the Oaxaca Restaurant a really neat Mexican restaurant. We thought about driving farther south to see some sororo cactus but decided it was too far and would be too hot.
We were going to take a Jeep tour Thursday but it turned out not to be what we expected so we spent the money for the helicopter ride instead and I'm glad we did. It was AWESOME.
We also watched the IMAX. It was the same one we saw with our kids when we were there 20 some years ago but it was still very very good.
The weather was hot there but I enjoyed not having the humidity that we have here at home. The evenings would cool off and it was very pleasant then. We wanted to catch the sunset at the Canyon but both nights that we were there it was too cloudy.

Cherbo, we stayed in Flag @ the Embassy Suites and did day trips to Sedona, Jerome and the Grand Canyon I think it was just the week before your trip. How was the Amtrak trip we saw that it drops right off in downtown Flag. Did you go downtown there??? We ate every nite in downtown Flag KEWL shops too. When we were at the GC it was a cool day not cold but not hot.
