quick update on my mom....

Hi everyone,

Well, my mom had to end up having a mastectomy. She's doing o.k.

Hard to believe they can send a 75 year old lady who's had 3 strokes home the next day after major surgery, but that's just the way it is.

I'm getting ready to go over there, but just thought I would "stop by " real quick to let you all know, and to thank you again for all the prayers and good thoughts!! You guys are the best!!

Rita, That does surprise me that they would send her home in such a short time under those circumstances. I hope she recuperates fully without any complications. Let her know she is being thought about and prayed for by people she doesn't even know.

I agree. Next thing you know, they'll be doing them at a drive thru.

Already saying prayers for you, your Mom and the rest of your family as well as Doctors who be caring for her. Having been there with DH, I know so well the anxiety and stress y'all are going through, but also know the wondrous power of prayer. They often say that death is peaceful, but the journey certainly isn't. I am sorry to be morbid but I feel for you. It reminds me of what I went through when my husband was ill. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Social work is actually a good piece of advice.... Although they can't give you information protected by Hippa, they can direct you in the legal documents that you and your mother can sign to make it ok for you to get information. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but calling the Hospital Admin- no matter how demanding, angry, persistent, etc that you are- will get you the same result. As a nurse, I can tell you, HIPPA is something that is pounded into our heads on a daily basis. Trust me, sometimes it would be easier to give family the information so they aren't continually calling to harrass us for what we aren't allowed to give. This goes for Hospital Administration, as well. Social work is your best bet. Nurses can't give information that the doctor read and charted because if by some chance we give the information back incorrectly, we open ourselves up for lawsuit and the hospital for a lawsuit. This is also a rule- at least everywhere I have ever worked. Sorry but their are rules that need to be followed. Our society has made it hard because of the fear of lawsuits.

Rita, I'm glad that she is doing OK. I can't believe that they sent her home the next day. I had a lumpectomy, was in my early 50's & I heal quickly. I was in the hospital at least for a couple of days.

Positive vibes coming your way to share with your Mom.

It is unbelievable how fast they discharge patients. You would think in your mom's case, considering her age and medical history they would have kept her a day or two.

I look back...I spent 5 days in the hospital after both my sons were born (1981 & 1984), however, when I had my lumpectomy in 1999 and the 2nd cancer surgery in 2003, I was sent home within 4 hours of my surgery.

I have excellent insurance too!

thanks for the continued good thoughts.

I still can't believe they sent her home either, my mom and dad also have excellant private insurance. If she would have just had the lumpectomy, she would have been home by noon the same day. Crazy the way they shuffle people thru.

I'm kinda tired now, need to get some zzzz's, I'm taking my dad to see his sister tomorrow (the one that has terminal cancer) but I'll post again.
