insurance approved the transplant!

my stem cell transplant has been approved by insurance. Sooooo. It all starts on satuday when I start the infusions for the chemicals that protect my mouth from the damage cause by the radiation and chemo. 3 days of that then the TBI 2 a day start on Tuesday. (TBI=total body radiation) then 2 days of intensvie chemo, then a day or two off and the transplant happens. wish me luck! have to go get ready to meet with the radiologist at the U of Washington 2 times today! ciao!

After you start receiving Medicare, most suppliments do the same thing. They pick up the balance after Medicare APPROVES and pays 80% of the approved amount. That is to say, the suppliment pays the remaining 20%. There is no additional charge to the patient. I doubt if you will be able to get a decent policy that pays just hospital bills. The usual thing is for all medical expenses, including physicians. Example: The doctor or hospital charges $100.00 for a procedure. Medicare APPROVES $50.00 and pays 80% of 50, ($40.00), the suppliment then pays the 10.00 balance and you owe nothing. If the procedure is something that Medicare will not pay for, you must be told in advance or you own nothing. Now, some suppliments will pay for the $100.00 per year deductible, others do not. The difference in premium price is more that enough to pay for the decuctible yourself. Most group policies, such as your husband's will change benefits when an employee reaches retirement age..So will any suppliment that you buy now. Any suppliment you buy now, will probably either be expensive or will also change once you start receiving Medicare. The AARP is a good Medicare suppliment policy. Most of the companies such as BC/BS have also have one. Don't waste your money getting one that pays for really special stuff like organ transplants as you probably would not ever need that sort of coverage. Be sure to get a policy that allows you to pick your own doctor. The HMO type coverage that restricts you to certain doctors or hospitals is not always a good idea. So sorry about your kitchen damage--what a tough way to get a "remodel" going! Our insurance works the same way as nosoccermom. That said, make sure your insurance isn't just sending you a check for the cabinets. Maybe you were just using that as an example, but get estimates for everything that you need to replace, making sure that they're what *you* want. Then it's up to the insurance to make a counter (oops, sorry, ha ha) offer. Someone else on GW had an upper cab fall off of the wall, crash onto the counter and floor! (I think my dog would never come out from under the bed again.) Her (I believe) insurance paid for all new cabs, counter, and floor because none could be matched in repair. And that's just from one cab! Unfortunately I don't remember if the insurance paid for granite counters if she had had laminate, for example, but maybe someone else does? You don't know until you ask :). cheers

With Chemo, I've gained back 38! darn it! but now that I don't need to take the steroids, and they took me off of one of the chemicals, I'm really working on it again. You will feel so much better! and more energy! wishing you good luck and a fast recovery! and I hope Sharon comes back and sees this! I agree (as a lawyer) to look at the contract, but at the end of the day your contractor shouldn't be pressuring you to use his preferred vendor on something like a counter. (I could see the contractor being insistent on using a preferred sub if he'd have to work with them on an ongoing basis or for a critical part of the job like framing or foundations, but counters are a pretty self-contained job.) Be firm and polite and explain that you want to use this vendor and why (including that if you aren't happy with the install, you'd be looking to him to get it fixed - is he prepared to eat that cost?). Ask him for a reason why he can't work with your preferred vendor. Tell him that if he really will not work with them, you will handle this part of the job yourself. If he gets aggressive or continues to pressure you hard, that would set off alarm bells for me. No one wants to change contractors in the middle of a job, but I'd be questioning what else is going here. My spidey senses tingling, particularly since there is an insurer paying.

If you feel a presence it the room during all of the treatments, it is all of us at the KT holding your hand. Wishing you all of the best Kat. You will be in our thoughts and prayers this next week and more. I plan to wear red everyday until this is over for you and you are back posting and doing well.

For the newer members here. Some of us wear red each Thursday to support all those at the KT going through cancer. It is something we have done probably for a few years now.
