How Many Different Fresh Fruits Do You Have on Hand?

Since I went to the grocery yesterday I seem to have a few different ones on hand. I have strawberries, grapes, sweet cherries, bananas and nectarines. There is even some cantaloupe but I would call that a melon even though it is a fruit of the vine. So do you have a variety of fruits on hand? Got a favorite one?

We always have a lot of fruit. We're due for a grocery run but right now we have Rainier cherries, a few peaches, strawberries and blueberries. Running low on all those and out of bananas.

As for favorites, hard to say. They're all so good!

Right now I have Fuji apples, bananas, cherries, blueberries, and lemons. I usually have a couple of nectarines or peaches around too but they go bad so fast, I only buy one or two at a time.

Let's see, I have over 100 varieties of hydrangea, at least 300 varieties of roses, around 20 varieties of peonies, about 40 varieties of magnolia, dozens of different lupines, and more coming, about 10 or so species of poppy, about 50 different iris, 6 or 7 varieties of trillium, and that just barely scratches the surface. I should someday try to catalog everything, it might prove quite interesting! I have a friend with over 4000 varieties of roses alone in his garden. He's got tons of other stuff besides that, all on about 2 or 3 acres. --Ron

Like scully, I think I have fruit trees in the garden. I see trees, it's just that I rarely see fruit. The "Snow Queen" Nectarine is kept very small so I can wrap it in wire, bird netting, and upside down vaseline-covered plastic pots at the trunk to keep out the squirrels and rats. That never works. We got one nectarine last year. The avocados are too big for that- so I eat squirrel-bitten avocados. I stand a fighting chance with the Oro Blanco grapefruit and the sour oranges that are supposed to be Valencias, because the squirrels find them unpalatable. I'm growing ground cherries this year- we'll see if I get to try one before they are stolen. You'd think the little wretches would be content with the endless supply of peanuts they steal from the scrubjays, the vegetables from the potager, my sunflowers, and the chickenfeed, but I guess they need dessert. I shop at multiple stores. Pay day is every other Friday so I that is when I go to Wal-Mart or Smith's (Kroger owned). Every 2 weeks we also get coffee beans at the little mom and pop shop. We go to Sprouts every 2 weeks as their ads overlap on Wednesdays. This is actually getting less frequent as they have not put the bulk things on sale that I want the most as frequently (steel cut oats and short grain brown rice). The bread outlet is a once a month trip. Other stores such as Keller's (for meat), Trader Joe's, the international markets, Vitamin Cottage (for other bulk items), I alternate months. Some things I get through Amazon's subscribe and save and that can vary in frequency. Eggs are mostly from my hens and many of our vegetables come from our garden. Some of the variety in shopping is about the money savings but it is more along the lines of trying to match the quality to a certain price point and meeting my needs of acquiring a diversity of ingredients. Arborio rice at TJ's, quality meat at Keller's, red lentils in bulk at Vitamin Cottage, etc. Part of it is me trying to maintain a well stocked pantry because my moods are fickle and if the pantry has a variety of things, I can cook according to my mood. Pre-planned menus never, ever work for me.

Our house was a new build in 2007. It was a spec home so we didn't get to pick colors. Colors when we bought it- SW 7036 Accessible Beige on Walls and ceilings throughout Trim-SW 7008 Alabaster Dining room-SW San Antonio Sage Powder Room-SW Rookwood Blue-Green Trim and Wainscotting in Bonus Room-SW Tavern Taupe Hated all of the colors but loved the house. We have redone about 50% of the interior so far using BM Aura matte, but with some SW colors matched in Aura. Dining room is now BM Aura Pomegranate with ceiling in SW Alabaster Powder Room walls/ceiling are Valspar Belle Grove Light Amber (fell in love with this color and it was a one gallon job so I used Valspar paint-it came out pretty good but this is a low traffic room with wainscotting 4 feet up the walls so the walls won't get any hand contact) Kitchen is BM Aura Matte in BM472 Aganthus Green-ceiling remains undecided (still Accessible Beige) Great Room including coffer inserts is BM Aura Matte in BM473 Weekend Getaway Bonus room became a playroom for my 4 year old-walls in SW 6715 Lime Granita-all of the trim was converted to Alabaster from Tavern Taupe. I used Aura Semi-Gloss to get the right coverage. 4 Year old's bedroom is SW 6849 Partytime with 6848 Panache Pink on the ceiling 4 year old's bathroom is SW 6716 Dancing Green with Alabaster on the ceiling Master Bedroom and bath will be SW 7621 Silvermist with Silvermist on the bathroom ceiling and an undetermined lighter shade in the bedroom's tray ceiling ( I sampled a 25% mix of Silvermist but it screamed "It's A BOY!") I'm working on this room now. Still to come is the foyer/stairwell/upper hallway, a bedroom we use as a home office, and the entire finished basement which has a playroom/theater, bedroom, and full bath. I may hire out the foyer and stairwell as opposed to renting scaffolding but I'll be doing the rest myself.

Not at the moment. I need to go shopping today or tomorrow, but here in No. Mn, buying fresh fruit at the super market is a crap shoot whether the fruit is naturally ripened or artificially ripened then the good sweet flavor doesn't develop. We have a fruit/veggie stand a block from us and I stop there to get good, HUGE, cantaloupe. The guy there asks when we want to eat it, and I usually say today, and he goes through the pile and picks out a perfect one. He has always been right. I usually pick up a few peaches and maybe the rainier cherries will be there by now. I love, love fresh fruit, if it is ripe and sweet. Being a diabetic, food is a matter of choices and I choose fruit as my limited sweets.

I love fruit. Use fresh fruit as a side dish with meals and as snack food.

Cherries, black plums, blueberries, oranges, and the last of the HoneyCrisp apples.

I did get some good peaches a couple of times - but those are really a roll of the dice here so I'll buy one or two at a time. I miss a really really good peach.

We always have an abundance of fresh fruit all year! It's used for snacks and in place of dessert with meals. Currently, we have bananas, oranges, blueberries, kiwi, apples and a couple of end of the season peaches. We have a small fig tree that is covered with little green Brown Turkey figs. I'm hoping we'll have those in a week or so!

These are from my own garden and trees:

watermelons- 2
blueberries- bunches and bunches!!(best year we have had)
Nectarines - 7(first year producing)
cantaloupe-1 did not do too well. Lots of vine, little cantaloupes this year.

Always have fruit - we eat it as a dessert for dinner or with spinach as a salad. GS is 2 and mainly eats fruit.

Bananas
and some very old blueberries that got hidden under other stuff!

I usually keep 2. Most of the time its apples and grapes. A little later when the Door County cherries ripen, I'll add those. When I bring home strawberries, they don't last long enough to count.
