How many times do you spray your apple trees per year?
Comments (20)I think the sun-starved fruit tends to drop early for lack of adequate energy. I didn't keep up with scab on pears- I actually didn't realize that it can be a season long battle when it's as wet as it was this year. My 2 Boscs are 60% defoliated and dropped pears early though some are still on tree as did Highland which lost most pears too early to be worth anytning. Seckels did the same, but at least they have decent sugar. Bartlett and another unknown Bartlett type, but later, have completely healthy foliage and great fruit. Aurora stayed healthy but fruits not sweet enough. Most of the Honeycrisp apples, where foliage was fine, dropped a bit before ideal ripeness, or would have if I didn't pick them. Jonagold is thinning itself more than I'd like. All other apples were or are fine. I don't care at all about sooty blotch and fly speck....See MoreHow Many times Do you water Your Palms?
Comments (7)I think there is some misunderstanding regarding palms native to desert or Mediterranean climates. In particular, palms such as Washingtonias ans Phoenix dates depend on subterranean sources of water fed by springs . Their deep roots tap into aquifers. Obviously, in a container, they are completely restricted and rely heavily on our relatively shallow waterings. I would not suggest keeping these palms dry in the growing season, especially if you are feeding. My Washingtonias and Dates are grown in 18 gallon tubs in full sun, outside, in a hot microclimate that averages 90 -95 f. this time of year. I hose them down every day and by the following day, they need more water. In less sun, cool temps, larger tubs, more rain, etc., they would need less watering. Atmospheric water (humidity), is a different issue for these desert/Med. palms. Some are very intolerant of the humid East/Southeast!--Especially, W. filifera and many of the date palms. Attached is a link regarding the very particular homeland of filifera and their reliance on aquifers, springs, oases, and riparian environments. Here is a link that might be useful: Washingtonia filifera...See Moredo you wash your dishes before you wash your dishes?
Comments (20)One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing....See MoreWhen you hand-wash your dishes.......
Comments (41)Legionnaires disease?? Evidence shows contracting it from smaller in-home systems is unlikely. It's generally linked with larger systems...like hotels, hospitals and cruise ships. I think you'd have a better chance of dying from stabbing yourself accidentally with a knife while doing the dishes or slipping on water on the floor. Plus, I believe legionellosis needs to be at/over 140 for over a half hour to kill it off. So, you'd have to start with ultra hot or some how keep your water that high for over a half an hour to kill it. I can remember boiling water for minutes to disinfect baby bottles. Simply washing in luke warm/hot water that is not a scalding temp. is probably not going sanitize most things. You need really, really hot water (or solutions) to properly santitize things. If you're really worried about legionnaires for whatever reason, I probably wouldn't hand wash to begin with, or I would soak/rinse the dishes in boiling water....See Moresweet_betsy No AL Z7
