I think you need to talk to her. Not sure if you live in town or out in the country, but I know there are noise ordinances for barking dogs. But I guess my first step would be to talk to her. She has to know that her dogs are annoying. If she chooses to do nothing about the noise, I would think of contacting law enforcement or at least finding out what the ordinances are where you live. Good luck, sounds like an irritating situation and I am a dog lover too.

CR, people in this area can call the animal control or police to report ongoing barking. I'm not sure which it is because I've never done it. I just remember reading about it in some paper when we first moved here. They won't tell that it was you calling.

I have the same issue, but I'm in the middle with dogs on both sides. Of course I have two. When we sit outside by the firepit there is up to 10 dogs barking at one time. At least the worst barker has a muffled softer bark.

I don't believe talking to her will solve the problem, but try it anyway. We had a problem in our last neighborhood and I visited with a police officer about it. He said that is the easiest problem an officer has to deal with. The first time you complain, they come out and file a complaint against the owner. The second time they take the dogs. If you live in the rural area, not sure you can do anything about it.

I think I will try the No Bark thing before I say anything to her or anyone else. It's ironic but before this lady's Grandmother passed (about 10 yrs ago) SHE turned my other neighbor in for a barking dog! And yes,animal control told them who turned them in,so I'm afraid to do that.I don't want trouble with the neighbor.If she would find out I put that no bark thing up,I could just say it was for mine.Much as I love dogs...geesh...at least try to control them a little bit.I try with mine and can proudly say that mine are for the most part,happy,well adjusted dogs.People that visit can't believe how well behaved my dogs are for having so many.Even the new guy is good,but I can't take credit for him,he came that way.Except for barking....and I got him over that right away.Mine do bark but not non-stop,and if the neighbors on either side have company,I bring them in if they bark.

If it doesn't hurt the dogs and you only use it as needed, use the ultra sonic device. I'd like to know how it works.

I'm so thankful not to have any neighbors on our mile. Peace and quiet. Barking dogs would make me crabby. I don't know how you put up with it.

It wouldn't hurt them,it just emits an irritating sound(to the dogs) when they bark.I had trouble with Mic and Miss Em when they were pups and bought them both a collar.Heard a lot of beeping for a couple days,til they figured out that barking triggered it. Now I just have to tell them No and they quit.This new one they have though,makes no noise that humans can hear.I'm going to order one,will let you know if it works for them or not.Bet the other neighbors will thank me if it works! LOL!

Oh, good luck, CR. That would (and DID, in FL) make me crazy. I always felt sorry for dogs that were tied out in the yard all the time and barked for something to do. But the ones that kept me awake at night, they made me mad and I would report them without a qualm.

If she has that many, I don't know how you would stop it. Seems like once one dog starts, they all have to join in. I yell at mine to stop and our neighbors are so far away, they can't even hear it. I hate hearing it! And mine won't stop until I yell. Good thing I can out-yell their barks. lol

I don't know if there is an ordinance here or not.But she has a kennel license so I guess she can have alot anyway.Most people in this area have numerous dogs,I have 6.People behind me have horses,goats and dogs.People at the end of the ally have a pony and goats,neighbors a couple houses up have 4 or 5 dogs,another has 3.So I guess they're pretty leniant here. I want to get a Miniature horse but Larry says NO! He says I'd have it in the house....I said "and so,what's the problem with that?" LOL!

She may be a really nice person, but a good neighbor would not allow the dogs to bark uncontrollably. If she's running a kennel and they're dogs that she's boarding, that may be a different situation. However, when it gets real noisy, she should bring the dogs in especially at night. I would try the ultrasonic thingy but loved hounds x two idea. Invite her over for a cup of coffee or glass of wine and sit outside so she can hear the dogs and see how difficult it is to carry on a conversation.

ChubbyRat, I know exactly what you're going through but I hate to tell you, I don't think that gadget is worth it, I don't think it works....
We had a neighbor dog that barked from the time the people left for work until they got back home, absolutely drove me, and other neighbors. crazy...I saw that advertised, got it and in fact another neighbor put it on his shed that abuts their property line...It really didn't do anything....
There again, we didn't want to cause a stir by calling animal control, it wasn't the dogs fault, he just needed attention.....
What is really ironic, these same neighbors have a fellow that lives really close and guess what, has a dog that barks, alot, and guess who has called the authority a couple of times.......
It might be a good idea to have her over for coffee, cheaper!

It wasn't always this bad,she got 2 new pups a few months ago.Think they're 6 months now.Beautiful pups! BUT they bark like crazy,then get all of them going.It's nice when she goes for the weekends to show.But she hasn't gone for awhile now.
I like to let the front door open when we're home so the dogs can go out front for a bit of a change,but don't do it to much now.I feel like I'm punishing my dogs because of hers.I want to YELL "SHUT UP" but I don't....Larry does tell them "Enough Girls!" but it doesn't help much.

I would suggest you trying to talk to her and discuss options.
Do not apologize to her, but apologize for having to have the conversation.

Options, for you or her, would be to get an air horn, and blast them with it after firmly saying, "Hush!"

My next door neighbor would leave his dog outside until he returned from work at 2 a.m. The dog barked for hours and drove us nuts. I called the police to complain and would only file a complaint if I signed.

I had 2 large dogs at the time and they weren't barkers but if they did they stopped immediately if I hushed them.

She sounds like an animal hoarder. Proceed with caution. Those dog bark devices can't be turned oin permanently. Youo press a button that emits either a beam of light (a warning) or a mild sound to startle a good dog, or a button nthat produces a strong sound that will stop a really bad dog, one that's threatening to attack. In the meantime, you might want to contat your local Animal Control or even the Police. Just tell them the situation, you don't want her arrested or threatened, but see what they say.. Good luck. My neighbor behond me had a dalmation she kept outside all the time. It didn't like living outdoors in a doghouse, so it bark-nark-barked for hours at a time. We put up with the noise for several years. He finally got old and died. Maybe she let him in the house. We had another neighbor whose dog jumped the fence and ate out of our compost pile. With six dogs yourself, you can hardly complain about the number of dogs next door. LOL Six, eight, ten, a dozen -- lotsa barking regardless.

Frankly, I think you are stuck! I would speak to the neighbor, asking her to keep the dogs quiet at night. That's the most you can expect, IMO.

I'm glad to live where three dogs is the limit and they cannot annoy neighbors without the owner facing hefty fines. (Second complaint for yapping after 11 p.m. is $500.)

Oh Chubby Rat, do I ever feel for you! I had almost the exact problem with my next door neighbor. She has 4 dogs (2 that are bad about barking) and her daughter, who comes home every other weekend and stays several weeks in the summer, has 3 dogs, 2 that are bad barkers. So just imagine, and I know you can!, 4 little dogs standing at the chainlink fence and barking non-stop whenever we were outside. They would leave their back door open so the dogs could come and go and if they saw any movement in our backyard, they'd come running and bark until we went inside. It actually caused a big rift between us. She said, just call us if they are bothering you. So, OK. If we wanted to eat out on our patio and the dogs were barking, we'd call them. After just a few phone calls, they started taking offense. Like we were being mean to their babies. Ugh. It all came to a head and we just decided to put up a wood fence. Best thing we ever did. I don't talk to her anymore because I hardly ever see her but the best part is, now that her dogs can't see us, they don't stand at the fence and bark.

I know it's a terrible situation. If it's at all possible, and if the ultrasonic thing doesn't work, I'd suggest a wood fence. It's true, fences make good neighbors. At least it shut her dogs up and now we can enjoy our backyard again.

We have a neighbors dog that is kept chained all the time..He barks and barks and barks..all night long.He is one that only get attention when we go over there.We have unwrapped him when he would get wrapped up.I even bought him a longer tie that would not kink up at his neck..We take him food....So we do love this dog.. We would go to bed and that dog would start..It would echo off our bedroom wall. We talked to the neighbor noting worked..So one night after a lonnnng night of barking.
Hubby got his flashlight..He shined the light on the dog..and then hit the wooden fence down from the dog..NO he didn't harm the dog or in any way come close to harming this dog.. The dog ran for his doghouse, the next night the same thing. The third night all it took was the flashlight.
So maybe just shining the light and making a loud noise would startle them enough to quite them. It may take a while and there are times when the dog starts barking again but all it takes it that flashlight.

Chisue...I'm not complaining about how many she has,heck,I don't care if she has 50! I LOVE dogs,the more the merrier BUT if you want that many,you have a responsibility ,a big one!Like I said,I try to control my dogs barking.I take measures to assure they don't bother anymone.And the other neighbors around here mostly have numerous dogs.Hers are the only ones with the barking problem.It just upsets me that they stand there at the gate and bark and bark and she does NOTHING about it.I will try the bark stop thing.If that doesn't work,I'm sure some of the other neighbors will be complaining soon.My immediate next door neighbor didn't even know how many I had.She told me they never carry on even when I'm not home.

CR-I aplaud you for controlling your dogs.So many people could care less if their dogs bark and feel they are "just doing their job",as in protecting their property or telling us someone strange is around.I have always taught my dogs not to bark at every little thing.We have one here(not mine,DS's)that barks at EVERYTHING! I have tried to teach her to stop but when you don't have support from anyone else it's hard.Anyway,I think the thing you are talking about would be a good start.Then if it doesn't work try talking to the neighbor.I would hate to lose a friendship or get someone that close to me mad at me.Good luck.

Oh, Lord. I couldn't handle that. Barking dogs...or any repetitive noise kills me. I train my dogs to not bark unless

In this situation, I'm not sure it is wise to let your neighbor know who filed a noise complaint. She may suspect you, but won't know for certain. She is already very much aware of the barking annoyance, and apparently is doing nothing to quell it. This speaks for itself - the ole case of actions tell all. If you have a noise ordinace, file a complaint and let the police handle it. its better they make the confrontation than you since you have to live next to each other.

By your description, it seems there is a lot lattitude of what the neighborhood can keep on their property. It must have been that way when you moved there - I have no idea how long you have been there. If that was the norm when you moved in, then you are fighting and uphill and unwinable battle; If, however, things were quiet with ordances were in place and then became noisy after they moved in, you have a beef.

You could take a variety of reactions as described in the posts above. It might make your point, but would not solve anything and would deepen the wedge between you and your neighbor.

It would seem to to me that your neighbor's dogs should know you well enough not to raise much fuss when you are about. Maybe, it is something else that is setting them off, like the presence of another dog or dogs. If one of your doggies come out with you, most likely, it start the barking. And then, there are some dogs who like to bark at anything and need to be conditioned.

I don't know what I'd do in your situation. Somehow, the message has to get across that the dogs are an annoyance without instigating a vendeta. Good neighbor relations is desirable over a contentious one.

I know what you're going through! The neighbor behind me had her house broken into and got a large dog to "guard" her property. Problem was that this dog barks at everything- makes no difference if it's a person or a butterfly. My husband and I were in the back yard discussing the best way to install a drip system and couldn't hear ourselves talking and we were less than 3 feet from each other.

She's such a good neighbor in every other way, but she just doesn't see the problem. She thinks he'll grow out of it. Okay, he's 2 years old now and I told her "He's done growing. This has to be trained out of him".

I was so tired of working in my garden and having this huge dog practically throw himself against the chain link fence between us and barking in my face. I felt like I had made it clear that there was a problem that needed to be addressed and it was also clear that she wasn't going to do anything about it, so I decided that I had to take care of the problem myself. Involving the police would be a last resort. I tried making friends with the dog. No help. Still barked. I did a bit of research and finally ended up buying a device similar to the one you talked about. But I bought a small hand held box that I could take out into the garden with me and use when necessary. My limited research suggested that an ultrasonic wave coming from an unknown source would surely irritate the dog, but that he would not be able to associate it with the fact that "I" was the one he shouldn't bark at. I mean, I don't expect a dog never to bark. Dogs bark. I just didn't want him barking at ME. The research also suggested that this wave should be preceded by a command. So, each time I was in the backyard I took the box with me. I'd go about my work and when he barked, I'd firmly say, "Cody, stop!" and push the button. Immediate results, but not permanent. Each time, the routine was the same. It only took a couple of days for success. Now, when I'm in the backyard and he senses a presence, he takes a run toward the fence. When he sees me, he slows to a walk and lowers his head and ambles on by. If someone else is in the yard with me, sometimes he'll bark, and he gets his "Cody, stop!". That's all it takes now.

If my neighbor is out back when Cody barks and hears my command and his response, she just thinks he's figured it out himself. Yeah, he's figured it out alright. I would never tell her what method I used though. I might lose a good neighbor.

My dog is a barker and it drove me crazy. I couldn't have the front door open as she would sit there and bark at anything that moved.

I bought the Bark off and that little thing is worth it's weight in gold. It's the best 20.00 bucks that I have spent in a long time.

I can now keep the front door open and enjoy the weather.
