Jodi, it looks like an Allium, which is a glorified onion. They come in beautiful colors, producing round heads full of the tiny blossom.

Lindsey, I think that rose is fake!!! Just kidding, of course. It's stunning, looks like velvet. Good old Mr. Lincoln is a great red rose.

Beautiful flowers all. Now for something completely different. This came up in an email with my twin sister, she wondered if I had a copy of this photo (she had misplaced hers). Here I am with her at 6 months in 1952. Just felt like sharing. I'm on the left.

I can assure you the rose isn't fake. :-) The Mr. Lincoln rose tree is one of several rose trees that line the walkway from our driveway to the front porch. When I first saw the photo when I loaded it from my camera to my 'puter, I also thought it looked fake! I used a Canon PowerShot SD1100IS with the lens on the Macro setting. Here's the same rose, taken with the macro setting (the same photo above) and without the macro setting. I took the macro photo on Sept 29, 2008, at 6:48pm, and the other one at 6:49pm. I love taking closeup photos of flowers, but they nearly always end up out of focus! The macro setting helps a bit with the focus (for me, at least). It doesn't help that there is generally a breeze when I'm trying to take pictures of our roses, so they won't "sit still" to have their photo taken! :-)

Lindsey, is this rose also a Mr. Lincoln? Its so velvety that no matter what angle or camera setting I use it always looks over-exposed. I cannot for the life of me get a decent picture of this particular rose...LOL. Is it the "velvetiness' of the flower or what??????

Gosh, I'm really not the person to ask if a rose is any particular variety. All I know is that when I first saw a Mr. Lincoln rose many, many years ago I fell in love with it because it's such a beautiful color and the petals are so velvety. So, when we were picking out rose trees for the walkway, I made sure we got a Mr. Lincoln! There's also a Double Delight, a Peace, a First Prize, and I forget the other one. We lost one in a severe wind storm... one of these days we'll get around to replacing it! We also have a dozen rose bushes in the front yard, but offhand I can't name many of them. Any rose photos that I post here at the KT would be photos that I took of our roses. (Other flower photos would also be taken by me, but could have been taken anywhere...)

But from the looks of your photos, my guess would be that, yes, it's a Mr. Lincoln. And, yeah, the petals are like a thick, luxurious velvet. I just love to touch them! :-)
