Any chance that a trip to a store that sells window air conditioners might be in your future?

We're heading to the beach this morning and plan to be spending all the time in the water. This afternoon, we head to the movies (Harry Potter).

I hate this weather.

I think it is time to do some organizing and tidying in the basement!

Small window a/c units aren't that expensive anymore, it might do to check it out.

It's already getting pretty warm. We're at the country house for the moment, where the ac doesn't work all that well. But we're packing up to head home to the suburbs--leaving in about a half hour. We never had AC there until about a month ago. (we only put it in to sell the house). But I AM enjoying it.

Have you considered a portable AC unit? They make a lot of sense to me. You only need spend the $$$ to cool the room where you are, and you can move it from room to room as needed. Once we've sold the suburban house and moved here permanently, I plan to get one for this place. We also have a finished basement here. I'm planning on putting in a summer kitchen down there, so we'll be able to spend our days down there, when the weather is hot, and it won't cost us anything to be cool.

It's gonna be hot and humid-90 and humid here in Long Island. I plan to stay indoors in my air conditioned house. I ran all my errands this morning before it got too bad.

In the pool, we don't use it as often as we should, we are this year.

Azzalea, we have a portable a/c in the bedroom and it does a good job but it truly isn't all that portable. It needs to be vented and it is heavy, too heavy for me to carry down the stairs.

I just came in from doing the only outside work I will do all day, except for moving the sprinklers around. I'm going to do some projects in the house, since it's air conditioned. I might make some cookies... they bake quickly, but it takes me a while to decorate them. Then I'm going to organize some paperwork.

Today I'm doing the same as yesterday. Out for breakfast then back into the house. I have a window unit upstairs and by closing off the other rooms and setting up a couple of extra fans, it keeps things reasonably comfortable in here. Not sure what'll happen the next couple days when 100ð+ temps and nearly 80ð dewpoints are possible but as long as it keeps chugging, I'll be satisfied. I have another unit but I'm not really able to put it in right now so we'll see what happens. I'm keeping lots of water and tea handy. I should probably pick up some sport drinks too but so far, so good.

Give me 20ð any day.

I feel for you. The weather's going to be extremely hot in the midwest this week and you just aren't used to it. When we go home to Indiana, people will gripe about the heat and we think it's just right.

The first few years I lived in Florida I wore shorts all winter and thought people were kind of crazy for being all bundled up when it was 62 outside. After 31 years here, my winter wardrobe consists of sweats and long johns.

It's all what you get used to.

Drink plenty of water and keep your curtains closed to keep the sun out if you don't have air conditioning. Eat sandwiches and salads for a few days or food you can cook on the grill.

That's good enough for me.

It's 82 here according to the local news website. It's freezing cold in my house. Ever since I lost all this weight I freeze and my hot flashes have come back, so one minute I freeze and the next I'm sweating. I'm still in my pjs and had to put a long sleeved sweat jacket on about a half hour ago. My thermostat is set at 74 for the kids and dogs. My son keeps turning it down, though, then I really freeze.

It actually feels wonderful to walk out into the sunroom to let the dogs out. I may go out later and mow the grass just to warm up.

It is 90 out right now and I am in my downstairs kitchen and it is 72. We have two window units going upstairs and they do a good job for this good sized home. I use insulated draperies where I can and that really helps too by keeping them closed all the time.

Main thing is to drink water and/or Gatorade/Powerade to keep the electrolytes up. Eat light, but do eat. Outside, wear hats and take breaks. I mix water with Gatorade.

Marita, I second the suggestion for a window air conditioner if you can do it. I have a small one in my bedroom and a larger one downstairs. I hardly ever use the bedroom A/C because I prefer a window fan to pull in the cool night air. But sometimes the A/C is a blessing. Downstairs, my house is cool on all but the hottest or most humid days. At those times, the A/C not only cools the rooms but lowers the humidity. Prevents mold, etc.

For the coming heat wave, I'll spend most of my time in the house. No lawn mowing until after 6:00 p.m. - if at all.

If your cats are like mine, don't worry about them in the heat. Mine actually choose to lie around in the attic, where I can tolerate the temperature for about 30 seconds.

Well, ok, I broke down and bought a window unit today online. Unfortunately it was out of stock at Sears (which is about 1/2 mile from my home) and therefore won't get here for a week. But it was time to do it and the price seemed right. Bought a 15,100 BTU Kenmore that may just cool most of my house (it is a small house all on one floor); if not the whole thing I can shut off the living room/dining room and just cool the whole back of the house. Really, I'd been meaning to do this but I've only been in the house a couple years and didn't need it last summer. Will have to get my handyman to install it because it comes with a sleeve that you install first and then put the chassis in. Anyway, with taxes and shipping it came to just under $500. and will probably be the best $500. I've spent in awhile! I'll swelter this week but know it's coming!!

It is extremely humid here today, with a little rain. When you come out of a cool building, your glasses fog up! I've just stayed in, after church, today. I am not looking forward to the temps for the next couple of days. It's 80ð here at 6:00, but feels like it is much hotter.

I load all my photography gear, a folding chair, a thermos of coffee, jug of ice water and a sack lunch in my little wagon and head on down to the lake, then pick out a nice cool spot in the shade and sit there photographing birds and critters for the day.
