My Day Lilies

May day lily bed has been blooming for a week. There's enough blossom heads to last for one week more. At the begining of the month, we had plenty of rain, but now it has been 8 days without any and the temps been hitting 90+ the past 3 days. We could use rain again.

Daylilies got their name because each flower opens up for one day. Some, such as "STELLA D'ORO" will re-bloom after a rest of about a month, but some years even the re-bloomers don't make a second attempt. The secret, I think is to have early, mid-season and late bloomers in the same bed so you have a nice display for several months. I don't know about Z10, but here in Northern Il. my daylilies start blooming the end of May and different varieties put up scapes and blooms right through September. Actually, right now "PAPER BUTTERFLY" has put up numerous scapes but unfortunately, they will get frost bite before they get a chance to re-bloom.

MM: Thanks very much for the offer, but Mrs Hamilton is going to give me some of hers. Sheila: what a tease having them just out of camera range. Yesterday I noticed the white herons are rebuilding their nest, looks like they may raise another family in my front yard. Whilst watching them I noticed there was a Peewee nest a little further up in the tree, it is out of my lens range unfortunatley. I just hope they have their own babies this year. Last year a Common Koel (rain bird) laid an egg in the peewee's nest and the poor things were run ragged trying to keep food up to the chick. (we called the chick Baby Huey) :-)

Barbara those chickies are so adorable. I must say they are much better builders than the Noisy Miners. Yes a good strong looking nest that one.They keep Mum busy dont they. Thanks for sharing as I have never seen those chicks before. And a very beautiful Day lily too. Cheers..MM.

That is very pretty....it looks like one of the old varieties, which more and more, are becoming some of my favorites. They are beautiful in their simplicity. The new ones are so ruffled and fancy....pretty too...but I like the old ones best now because they go so well with just about everything in the garden. By the way, the award given to the top daylily every year was named after my cousin, the Stout Medal. He was an early hybridizer of daylilies and worked for the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

I have lots of day lilies (they are like weeds here).Was trying to move some that were getting to thick a few years ago and just threw the ones I dug up out into the woods. Did NOT plant them, but they found a way to dig into the ground! Sure is pretty coming up the drive thru the woods now.

I don't lnow the name. These were on this lot when I had a house built here 36 years ago. I have done nothing to the bed in all that time except to mow the border to contain the size of the "jungle". Mixed within the bed and at each end is a ground cover of 'baby's breath'. The bed needs thining.

Two years ago, my neighbor and I had a tree service remove 4 mature trees on the lot line that had begun to cause trouble. Before that, this bed hardly bloomed, but after the overshadowing trees were removed, they went crazy.

The color in this photo is a little oversaturated. The true color is a bit more toward the orange color. This plant is probably one of the old vareities. It can be found growing wild along roadsides all over southern Wisconsin. Likely, these are escapes from someone's long ago landscaping. Home owners in this region planted lilies, hosta, oramential grasses, and other ground covers around mailboxes, driveway entrances, and fence corners.
