Joran Van der Sloot accused of extortion

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Joran Van der Sloot, the longtime suspect in the disappearance of missing Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway, has been accused of asking for $250,000 in exchange for her whereabouts.

In a criminal complaint filed Thursday by the U.S. Attorney in Birmingham, Van der Sloot is accused of asking for $250,000 from a person in Birmingham in exchange for information about the whereabouts of her remains in Aruba. Holloway disappeared in Aruba in May 2005 during a senior trip to the island.

Joyce White Vance, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, discussed the criminal complaint during a news conference Thursday in Birmingham. She said Van der Sloot was charged with extortion and wire fraud. She refused to identify who in Birmingham Van der Sloot contacted to attempt the extortion.

He was extorting Natalie's mother and she gave him $15,000 which paid for his trip .He wanted $250,000. I cannot understand why she would give her daughter's killer money to find the body.

A guest on FoxNews just said that the jails in Peru are THE WORST on the planet. The "dorms" are about 25x15' and hold 35 inmates. There are no toilets--just a hole in the floor. They get showers once a week, and the food is barely edible. Poor baby. He should have been man enough to confess to killing Natalee--that would have been a walk in the park compared to what he is facing. I love the irony--he got off in Aruba because his father was connected; he had no chance of getting off in Peru because HER father is connected. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. As for boycotting Aruba: When I was there in the 1980's, it was the nicest place I had ever been, with the nicest people. I don't support the idea of hurting all the residents because of a few corrupt bureaucrats. Hopefully, the Arubans will be smart enough to vote out the corrupt politicians. JMHO

A lot of people are suspecting he may be a serial killer and gotten away with it for a long time. I think he may be a spree killer along the lines of Andrew Cunanan (who killed Gianni Versace). Spree killers have poorly hatched plans and robbery is often the motive, though sometimes rape is involved. Spree killers don't make much of an effort to conceal the corpse, and do dumb things that leave a trail (Cunanan used his real name when pawning his victim's belongings.) Spree killers "snap" for some reason and start a killing spree. There may be an interval between the first and subsequent murders and earlier murders are spread further apart, but the murders tend to happen closer and closer together as time goes on. (Towards the end Dahmer was killing a new victim every week.) The video at the casino shows a lot of awkward hand shaking going on AKA 'the pass' for drugs. Note the movement of Jorans hands after he shakes her hand. Note how she does not want to stay. It is likely they went back to the hotel to do drugs together (this is not an uncommon situation and I an NOT blaming the victim). Maybe they just went to do online gambling since they both like to gamble and the casino closed at 5:00. Note in the casino video below the guy in the green shirt on the left who sits down at the very same time as Joran. Joran weirdly shakes his hand with a prolonged clasp before he departs and does the same with another guy he passes who had been "hanging around". Could Joran be buying date rape drugs? Had one of these guys been paid to drug her drink when she was not looking? Something seemed to be "cooking". Money(chips?) and drugs look like they were being passed. I think it'd do other girls a favor if the story stays on the news. I went to Mexico when I graduated from high school. We ditched the chaperones a few times and went to the clubs. There were guys trying to buy us drinks. I didn't know anything about people slipping drugs in drinks at that time. I remember getting a drink and it was so strong that I felt something after a couple of sips. I set it down and didn't drink any more. Most people wouldn't do that. I also went with a group and stayed with the group. I don't think Natalie did that.

I also heard, he's been asking friends for money....I'd say, he's in a heap of trouble this time and Daddy isn't around to "bail" him out....I feel bad for his mother.....

I want to see this jerk suffer brutally for the rest of his life. He deserves to live the rest of his life in hell rather than be given a death sentence.

By the way, where is the father....did he die???

He's in jail where he belongs. I think he'll get nailed this time and will never be released. There won't be a third victim.

His father is dead.

The U.S. criminal complaint alleges van der Sloot not only agreed to provide the location of Holloway's body but also information about the "circumstances of her death" upon receipt of $250,000 from someone in Birmingham. The alleged scheme was an attempt to "defraud" or obtain money or property by means of "false or fraudulent pretenses," the complaint alleges.

No mention that it was Natalee's mother.

Sorry to hear the father is dead. I'd like to see him prosecuted for his role in Natalee's disappearance. We know he let the kid use his boat that night. There is evidence that he was on the boat with the kid.

I am firmly convince that he helped the kid dump Natalee into the shark-infested Atlantic Ocean side of the Island. The Caribbean side of the island is very calm waters. The water on the Atlantic side is volitile and shark-infested. Sorry to say, I don't believe there is a body to recover and hasn't been since day one.

South American prisons are as close to hell as you're going to get and Peru has no death penalty. So, he will get just what he deserves.

Maybe now since his father is dead, he'll be prosecuted for Natalee's death in Aruba since no one is frightened of what the "judge" will do to them. One can wish. Aruban officials have this girl's blood on their hands as well as Natalee's. I do think they will rock his boat in Peru though. He deserves it. Yes, I believe he is guilty! That smug so and so!!!

That is not true.

Peru does have the death penalty.

But, the death penalty is not one of the options in this particular crime. Miscellaneous murder does not warrant the death penalty there.

This guy has been living in Thailand and possibly Cambodia, and various countries in South America and Europe. I wonder how many he has killed where he did not get caught? This time he killed a a woman from a rich and famous family that trumps his status of being from a fairly rich and respected family whose father is(was) involved in the judicial system.

The reports say the evidence shows the girl put up a struggle and was not just surprise attacked from behind. They say they should be able to extract DNA evidence from her fingernails. Gotcha.
