Vent on getting old

If bad luck happens in threes, maybe mine is done. I tripped and fell on April 19 right in front of my office. Just as my wrist was healing from that fall, two weeks ago I missed the last step on the basement stairs (carrying laundry) and fell on my legs. The right calf is knotted up, but there are no visible bruises. (I have never broken a bone.) Today, I chipped a molar. The whole outer section came off. First time that has happened to me. Will see the dentist tomorrow at 12:30 and will see an orthopedic doctor Thursday am. I'm 63 and in the last few months feel like I am falling apart. Thought about retiring, but realized that won't keep me out of trouble!

Ouch, you've really had a time of it. I went through a stage like that and one day my boss took me aside and asked me if everything was okay at home. I told him sure but couldn't figure out what the heck he was talking about--he thought Harry was beating me up--lol! Harry's just about the gentlest man I've ever met.

Sure hope you heal soon. I've never broken a bone either, but sure wasn't for lack of trying :-)

Uggg. Why are you letting her vent all over you anyway? I would just work out the logistics with her and let her vent to her friends. Sounds selfish, yeah you miss your husband and his child misses him too. You grown up thing. Avoid needless exchange with this energy vampire.

I usually take care of problem myself like a clogged kitchen sink. Most plumbers probably do not view that problem as 'critical' and are giving priority to emergencies such as "My pipe's broken and my house is flooding. Quick, please help." The other problem may be that he's the only plumber in town making house calls, and does not have to be in a rush, or make schedule. Another problem is that he may have been working a job before yours that took more time than he anticipated in which case, he should have called, but if he does not have a helper to make that call, he may skip it. And then there are tradesmen who are very independent and lackadaisical.

Do you mean buying another VaH, or buying another brand of hood, perhaps one that incorporates the characteristics that commercial hoods have embraced for maximizing performance and efficiency. This ties into your baffle question. My motivation to trample this ground yet again is weak at the moment, but en brief: Both VaH fans and baffles capture grease by centrifugal extraction -- the baffles by two direction reversals in the air flow; the VaH by throwing the air against an impingement surface. I don't have a VaH, but my impression from others' comments here is that baffles are easier to clean. Closer to my own interests is the question of actual air flow performance. VaH claim certain air flows, but these at best apply to the hood hanging freely in the air. With ducting and a roof or wall cap, and the very likely restrictions of the make-up air path, the actual flow rate will be less -- just as it is for the flow rates specified for conventional blowers. The question then is which technology (stretching the meaning of the word to its limits) produces sufficient restricted flow in the setting where it is installed. Data published by VaH shows that their fans have shallower fan curves, so they are less suitable where flow restrictions are present than conventional blowers. (VaH designs avoid the flow restriction that is presented by baffles, for example, so they start off with an advantage, but this advantage becomes a disadvantage when a complete system including the inevitable, intended or accidental, make-up air path is accounted for.) For many, noise is a performance factor. The lowest noise solution will be based on an exterior roof or wall blower, or an inline blower, supported by a silencer located in the ducting between hood and blower. This applies wherever there is sufficient space and the ducting is long enough to accommodate a silencer. One can easily talk next to my hood connected to a 1500 CFM (nominal) roof blower at full power with an inline silencer in my attic. VaH Magic Lungs, on the other hand, are at one's ear level, and in my view only compete for noise with hood interior mounted conventional blowers. Independent of the above considerations, one should first determine the flow rate needed, then apply loss factors for the blower sizing. This can only be done when one has determined how well the hood canopy is expected to capture the rising and expanding cooking plumes, and at what height one intends to place the hood for free cooking access and sightlines. There are important differences in performance and convenience between shallow low hoods, larger pro-style higher hoods, and large commercial hoods mounted four or more feet above the counter. We can go over these aspects to the degree you wish, but first I recommend you search for and read the many related topics on this forum that I and others have contributed to that address these principles. This will take some time. Alternatively, reading the first 20 pages in the Greenheck kitchen ventilation system design guide will provide a commercial perspective overview explaining the principles that also apply to residential cooking plume capture and containment. The hood in the picture has insufficient capture area, zero capture volume (reservoir), a mesh filter where baffles would likely be needed (depending on cooking and CFM), and spillage out the front due to the cylindrical shape of the canopy. Adequacy of volumetric air flow rate is almost irrelevant. Providing a photo or part name/number of the Wolf hood in question would be helpful. In general, hoods can be wall mounted with a duct that rises toward the ceiling, or extends horizontally into the wall. Ducts that rise vertically will typically have duct covers, as in the example in the picture. Some Wolf hoods (island hoods in particular) are made to hang from the ceiling. In my case (Pro Island hood), a duct cover is bolted into ceiling joists, and the hood is bolted to the duct cover. In other words, the configuration is designed to carry the weight. The duct itself is not intended to be weight carrying. Typically the hood structure carries the part of the duct weight below the ceiling. There are many factors to consider with hoods, and if these haven't been considered before purchasing the Wolf hood, perhaps we should go over them once the hood has been specified. The correct approach, of course, is to determine the ventilation system's performance, aesthetic, and cost requirements before purchase of a hood that meets them, or which provides the best (in the customer's view) trade-off among them. And don't forget make-up air requirements. Review of a significant number of 'hood' and 'MUA' threads here should provide insight into performance requirements.

I hope your 'Black Cloud' has moved on. I too kinda believe in The three idea. When two bad things happen. it's like waiting for the other shoe to drop. LOL When I hear the phrase......falling apart, my mind goes to my late friend, Sue. She would get her words or letters mixed up and she would speak in Spoonerisms.....Falling apart, she would say palling afart. The only broken bone I've has was a big toe when I slipped in the tub and the toe hit the faucet when I fell.

It actually seems like you are young, mobile, healty and active one day and the switch gets flipped and the next it's a trip down hill until you are old. I'm already there but trying to stay alert and all of the above.

I noticed big changes when I hit forty. My once-perfect eyesight suddenly turned to near-sightedness. I had to wear glasses,Gah! Not only that, my prescription got worse every year. And my gums started to recede. Extra cleanings at the dentist, and faithful flossings followed . And my hips and derriere got bigger than ever. (I was always bottom-heavy, even in Junior High). Now I'm nearly 60. But as my Dad always said, consider the alternative.

Sorry about your streak of bad luck. As for retirement, it is wonderful--it gives you plenty of time for doctors' appointments.

I am also 63. I remember a time when my calendar was filled with fun dates. Now, it is filled with medical things for DH and me. Getting old is not for wimps!

I'm 64 and I agree with having more medical/dental/chiropractic appointments.
Right now I need a dental implant and my DH needs a right shoulder replacement. Last year I had cataract surgery and he had a left shoulder replacement, along with a back inflamation/infection, (they weren't sure what it was except
it was serious and he spent time in the hospital.) Last year he was hospitalized 4 times for 4 different problems.

I hope this year will be easier on us....

Ouch! Well, I'm glad to be in such lovely company, but I wish all of us were doing better. Thanks for all the sympathy and kind notes.

The dentist was able to "fix" my tooth without novacaine. Was in and out in 30 minutes. That was a relief. Yep, I am getting bone implants for my teeth. Had the right side done two weeks ago and it caused a big bruise. Had to do training with a green streak on my cheek! Scheduled the left side for mid August when I'm done doing all the training.

DH has nine years to go, so I will work for a while longer. I do love my job and I'm not ready to give it up. Wouldn't mind more vacation time, though!

Really thankful that, at 82, with about a quarter mile of garden row (and some seeds still to plant) I've been enjoying good health: it's seldom that my body tells me, "Listen, you danged old fool - you can't do that any more!"!

Blood clot in the lung last fall, some pain and discomfort for one day and the blood thinnners that the nurse gave me that night cleared things up ... and I've been on Warfarin since.

Regular visit with the doc this morning, discussion of a follow-up scan, and I'm to get one soon, things going well and they're considering taking me off of the Warfarin.

Now ... if I could only remember what else it was that I intended to say!
