How many license plate choices do you have to choose from?

In Nevada, we have...get this...at least 40.

Good heavens! How do you choose? Are the backgrounds different? Different slogans? And why so many?

We have just one. White plate. 8 digits comprising of letters and numbers. And of course, personalized plates.

My first suggestion would be to incorperate as an "S" corp,and add your spouse to the license so that if something should happen to you, God forbid, the business could continue after your passing, not to mention the tax benefits associated with incorporation as an "S". Here in NC you must file a request to be an "S" corp with your incorporation papers or you automatically become a "C" corp which can be disasterous in it's tax implication (i.e. - double taxation). I think that if your marriage is strong, and it doesn't cost considerably more to do so, it would seem to be prudent to add your spouse. I would consult with a CPA and/or a (and I hate to say this as I am not particularly found of them) lawyer.

Hi! We're 1/3rd of the way there (151 applications as of yesterday) and have until December 1 to collect them. (We can continue into next year if we don't have enough by December- there are all kinds of 'what if's' in that case, so by December 1 is best :) collectordi- right now, we're taking pre-sale orders, which means I'm a middle-man for the DMV. They won't be available on the DMV's website until we collect all 450 prepaid applications for the first round of plates. Just a comment on the safe driver comment. My DH got a photo radar ticket for being too safe. We were driving down one of the main streets of our town one night about 11pm during an ice storm. He was driving 18mph. The light turned yellow as we approached it on a 6 lane road. His choice was to try to stop and possibly slide everywhere or to keep going. He kept going but because his speed was so slow he did not make it across all 6 lanes before the light changed to red and the camera took our picture. Had he been going the speed limit on the road (45mph) he could have made it through the yellow light in time, but because he was driving a safe speed for the conditions he was ticketed. Also, our local police department has since increased the length of time that particular light remains yellow because there was only enough time for people driving 40mph or faster to get through the intersection once the light turned yellow and it was causing too many accidents from people slamming on their brakes. Since increasing the length of time on the yellow light accidents have decreased at that intersection dramatically. So anyway, my husband's safe driving on icy roads caused him to get a photo radar ticket. He could have gone to court and fought it, but the ticket was only $80 and he would have had to take a day off from work to fight it which wasn't worth it.

Don't know about licensing requirements in your state, but I know generally that there are no licensing requirements or certifications for workers of home improvement contractors or specialty contractors doing flooring, painting and other decorative arts work. A flooring installation contractor or worker will (or should) make aesthetic decisions during the installation to give a pleasing visual result. However, when it comes to factory-made and finished wood flooring, aesthetic decisions become difficult, due to the amount of 'shorts' in a box of flooring and the presence of equal-length material. It is almost impossible to avoid patterns when installing this kind of material. A 'random' effect is what is best. Unfortunately 'stairstep' patterns and 'H' patterns are very difficult to avoid when installing this stuff, due to the available board lengths. Flooring purchases are not something consumers do frequently, so they have little idea what to look for and sometimes the result is not to their expectations. You would think that to be 'qualified' to install a product, you would have to participate in an industry-established training class or program, but that is not typical for much of the labor force installing these products. The only thing that protects the consumer from poor workmanship is consumer protection licensing requirements that vary from state to state and from municipality to municipality. New York City, for example, requires all home improvement companies to be licensed by their Department of Consumer Affairs. It is almost always best to know who you're dealing with, what their track record is and who will come to perform work in your home. I know that is difficult for most people to do...it takes an enormous amount of time and effort...but it almost always helps the consumer avoid problem contractors and incompetent workers. Also, the assumption is made by the consumer that workers sent out by a flooring retailer are employees of that concern. That is a wrong assumption; they can be employees, independent contractors, subcontractors or even people drawn in off the street for a particular job. Yeah...it happens.

I have no idea, but there are loads and loads of different styles.

I actually thought you were going to ask how many license plates we've each had. In my state, it's customary (read-easier) to get a new number every time you buy a different car. I've always fought them on that--you CAN keep your old number. So in the 40+ years I've been driving, I've had only ONE license plate number. I've had my plates remade--actually have my 3rd set on my car, but they still have my original number on them.

We pay extra for plates other than standard issue. The vanity plate is the most popular after regular issue. A vanity plate may contain any unique alpha-numeric nomenclature that fits the allocated space and does not carry a vile message. My wife's plate reads, IBCLC. We have fun watching other drivers oggle the plate and trying to make sense of it- they can't unless they happen to be in the same profession. It stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Once told this, many assume it is associated with the dairy industry, but it is not.

I don't know but it is a lot. I know that any group can design their on and if it is approved and 350 people sign up to buy it it will be made.

I saw a very unique plate today. It was just the basic plate with these characters: OOQOO. The squiggle on the Q could barely be seen so it looked like 00000.

I'm still using the red, white and blue 1776 Independence Centennial 1976 tag.

I've had it on 3-4 cars.

I think I read once where we have OVER 125....this is Florida. I swear there's not a day that goes by that I don't see one I've never seen before.....

There are about 88 different ones available in the state of Arkansas. One main one is "free" and almost all the others require an annual fee of about $35 on top of the regular registration fee for the vehicle. I wonder if a lot of the special plates will get retired due to the economic downturn? I know ours will, currently Woody has the Game and Fish elk plate on his truck, I got it for him when he started elk hunting, it's a beautiful plate. We won't be renewing that one in August, he'll go back to the regular plate which is a red/white/blue plate with a faint diamond in the center. (AR has a diamond mine.) He can hang his elk plate on the wall in the gun room.

We only have to have a plate on the back of the vehicle.

We have too many of them here in PA. I've had the same vanity plate since 1985. It costs the same as a regular plate, the extra cost was paid when it was first ordered. A class that I taught while working on my certification bought it for me! So it is (my initials) CTC and I do love it.

We too only have plates on the back of our cars.

We just voted on a choice of 4. Which ever was the most popular will be our next plate.

There is now a reciprocal agreement with the Native American Indian reservations and there are 7 different tribe plates in my state. The state has 4 different official plates for state owned vehicles. And 15 different dealer plates. Plus there are 30 different special issue plates which include such things as; Antique, Hobbyist, Modified, and two different ones celebrating the home football team (none for baseball), the state university (but none of the extensions), the Sesquicentennial plate is in use and replacement plates are still made but no longer allowed a new issue, various military plates are conditionally offered offered and a Gold Star plate for immediate family members available conditionally. Then there are others that charge a high fee where part of the money is a donation to an organization like endangered species. also there are "blank" numbered plates where one has to apply to the organization such as the Freemasons, who then are allowed sell a decal that is applied to the plate. There are also different plates for motorcycles, buses, farm vehicles, trucks, motorhomes, taxicabs, drivers ed vehicles, low speed electric neighborhood vehicles and temporary plates for new cars.

Then there are all sort of quirks, like the collector plate comes in two colors; one for sellers, one for owners and one must also own a "regular" plate for another car with can have the same registration number.

So that makes about 90 altogether. they have cut down greatly on the number of choices for special plates designs for autos. People just weren't buying them, and it was too costly to offer such a variety.
