How many license plate choices do you have to choose from?

In Nevada, we have...get this...at least 40.

Good heavens! How do you choose? Are the backgrounds different? Different slogans? And why so many?

We have just one. White plate. 8 digits comprising of letters and numbers. And of course, personalized plates.

Licensing laws vary from state to state. Check with your own state's agricultural commission OR your local extension office for the information you need. It is essential that you follow both the Federal laws AND your state's laws. The penalties can be substantial. Some state requirements are strict while others pretty darned lax. The ability to diagnose plant problems accurately comes with lots of experience, training, and education. One learns to look at and evaluate site condition for abiotic causes as well as studying up on the usual insect, disease, or other biotic culprits. If you don't have the knowledge of how to diagnose plant symptoms, then you need to get some education. Many community colleges have horticulture classes, and they are often filled with adult students just like you who want and need to improve their job skills. It's good that you doubt yourself. There's nothing more 'dangerous' than a gardener with pruners in one hand and a sprayer filled with chemicals in the other, but who doesn't know an azalea from a holly, or a ladybug from an aphid. And you are SO right in recognizing that a particular plant symptom such as leaf browning can be caused by several different factors. It takes a good diagnostician to figure out the problem with certainty. Good luck to you.

Licensing and competence are independent variables and should never be confused with each other. Plenty of licensed individuals are utterly incompetent, plenty of unlicensed people are superb at their work. Your state and local building authority determine what's required, in many places you have additional rights and recourse if the person working for you is licensed. Depending on the jurisdiction you may need to be licensed to pull a permit, more often trade work like plumbing and electrical require a license to pull a permit and or do the work. I'd worry more about competence than licensing except where the latter is required by law. Sounds like Tony is falling short on competence, whatever his licensing status. With regard to time for choices, I'd strongly recommend making all of those choices prior to signing a contract so that they can be included in the specifications for the job and the pricing. Many fewer misunderstandings, hassles and surprises that way.

Don't know about licensing requirements in your state, but I know generally that there are no licensing requirements or certifications for workers of home improvement contractors or specialty contractors doing flooring, painting and other decorative arts work. A flooring installation contractor or worker will (or should) make aesthetic decisions during the installation to give a pleasing visual result. However, when it comes to factory-made and finished wood flooring, aesthetic decisions become difficult, due to the amount of 'shorts' in a box of flooring and the presence of equal-length material. It is almost impossible to avoid patterns when installing this kind of material. A 'random' effect is what is best. Unfortunately 'stairstep' patterns and 'H' patterns are very difficult to avoid when installing this stuff, due to the available board lengths. Flooring purchases are not something consumers do frequently, so they have little idea what to look for and sometimes the result is not to their expectations. You would think that to be 'qualified' to install a product, you would have to participate in an industry-established training class or program, but that is not typical for much of the labor force installing these products. The only thing that protects the consumer from poor workmanship is consumer protection licensing requirements that vary from state to state and from municipality to municipality. New York City, for example, requires all home improvement companies to be licensed by their Department of Consumer Affairs. It is almost always best to know who you're dealing with, what their track record is and who will come to perform work in your home. I know that is difficult for most people to do...it takes an enormous amount of time and effort...but it almost always helps the consumer avoid problem contractors and incompetent workers. Also, the assumption is made by the consumer that workers sent out by a flooring retailer are employees of that concern. That is a wrong assumption; they can be employees, independent contractors, subcontractors or even people drawn in off the street for a particular job. Yeah...it happens.

Some people are collectors of handguns. They've had to have had them registered for well over 50 years. There are strict rules as to the security with which they are stored. If they want to take it/them to a shooting range, they need to get a permit to do so. There's been some controversy lately, because some such people have had their guns/collection stolen, and some of those guns were used by people who had bought them in the black market in murdering people. They say that when a gun has been used in one rather high rpfile, or several less so, murders, its price on the black market goes down. A few years ago they started a registry program for long guns, and many fought it. Others said that it seemed strange that people had no problem with registering cars, but resisted registering guns. It cost huge amounts of money - over a billion, some said closer to two billion - and there was a lot of controversy over that. Some of us said that we didn't see why that should cost an arm and a leg, for they'd had a registry of all of the handguns for over 50 years, so it shouldn't be too hard to set up a parallel program to register the long guns. A recently elected government dislikes that registry and is talking about scrapping it. A billion (or maybe closer to two) ... down a rathole. ole joyful

I have no idea, but there are loads and loads of different styles.

I actually thought you were going to ask how many license plates we've each had. In my state, it's customary (read-easier) to get a new number every time you buy a different car. I've always fought them on that--you CAN keep your old number. So in the 40+ years I've been driving, I've had only ONE license plate number. I've had my plates remade--actually have my 3rd set on my car, but they still have my original number on them.

We pay extra for plates other than standard issue. The vanity plate is the most popular after regular issue. A vanity plate may contain any unique alpha-numeric nomenclature that fits the allocated space and does not carry a vile message. My wife's plate reads, IBCLC. We have fun watching other drivers oggle the plate and trying to make sense of it- they can't unless they happen to be in the same profession. It stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Once told this, many assume it is associated with the dairy industry, but it is not.

I don't know but it is a lot. I know that any group can design their on and if it is approved and 350 people sign up to buy it it will be made.

I saw a very unique plate today. It was just the basic plate with these characters: OOQOO. The squiggle on the Q could barely be seen so it looked like 00000.

I'm still using the red, white and blue 1776 Independence Centennial 1976 tag.

I've had it on 3-4 cars.

I think I read once where we have OVER 125....this is Florida. I swear there's not a day that goes by that I don't see one I've never seen before.....

There are about 88 different ones available in the state of Arkansas. One main one is "free" and almost all the others require an annual fee of about $35 on top of the regular registration fee for the vehicle. I wonder if a lot of the special plates will get retired due to the economic downturn? I know ours will, currently Woody has the Game and Fish elk plate on his truck, I got it for him when he started elk hunting, it's a beautiful plate. We won't be renewing that one in August, he'll go back to the regular plate which is a red/white/blue plate with a faint diamond in the center. (AR has a diamond mine.) He can hang his elk plate on the wall in the gun room.

We only have to have a plate on the back of the vehicle.

We have too many of them here in PA. I've had the same vanity plate since 1985. It costs the same as a regular plate, the extra cost was paid when it was first ordered. A class that I taught while working on my certification bought it for me! So it is (my initials) CTC and I do love it.

We too only have plates on the back of our cars.

We just voted on a choice of 4. Which ever was the most popular will be our next plate.

There is now a reciprocal agreement with the Native American Indian reservations and there are 7 different tribe plates in my state. The state has 4 different official plates for state owned vehicles. And 15 different dealer plates. Plus there are 30 different special issue plates which include such things as; Antique, Hobbyist, Modified, and two different ones celebrating the home football team (none for baseball), the state university (but none of the extensions), the Sesquicentennial plate is in use and replacement plates are still made but no longer allowed a new issue, various military plates are conditionally offered offered and a Gold Star plate for immediate family members available conditionally. Then there are others that charge a high fee where part of the money is a donation to an organization like endangered species. also there are "blank" numbered plates where one has to apply to the organization such as the Freemasons, who then are allowed sell a decal that is applied to the plate. There are also different plates for motorcycles, buses, farm vehicles, trucks, motorhomes, taxicabs, drivers ed vehicles, low speed electric neighborhood vehicles and temporary plates for new cars.

Then there are all sort of quirks, like the collector plate comes in two colors; one for sellers, one for owners and one must also own a "regular" plate for another car with can have the same registration number.

So that makes about 90 altogether. they have cut down greatly on the number of choices for special plates designs for autos. People just weren't buying them, and it was too costly to offer such a variety.

How does law enforcement keep up with all of them? They add more all the time. It's crazy.
