need advice on dog spaying

I have a Chihuahua that has not been spayed.We have to take her out on a leash. I am dogsitting my granddog ,a poodle,who HAS been spayed and she can be let out in the back yard and does not stray or try to leave the yard at all. If I get the Chihuahua spayed will she be apt to behave in the same manner or will she always try to leave and run down the street? LOL! The poodle is wonderful.She goes out ,does her biz and comes back in on command.I need advice.Is it the spaying that is the difference or just the breed of dog???

If you don't have a fenced yard, any dog will be tempted to go down the street, Period. Even the poodle may try that some day. Has nothing to do with spaying or breed. A dog in an unfenced yard can/will take off.

Spaying does not change animal behavior. It will merely prevent male visitors coming around during heat cycles. Dogs should not be let out unleashed in unfenced yards without absolute supervision. You never know what outside danger might come along even if your dog stays within its boundaries.

Spay for your dog's health. There is absolutely no reason not to spay unless you have a registered (OMG Gardenweb is too stupid know what a female dog is) OK witch with a b that is bred under precise conditions for either a working dog or to preserve the breed.

My granddogs are horrible for this. All the dogs are neutered, but they will mark over each other; it's a territorial thing. Even the most submissive dog will do this. It does not have anything to do with housebreaking! One tip I read is to fill a plastic pop or water bottle with a few dried beans. When you see the dog go near an item that he'd likely mark, shake that bottle up to make the beans rattle. The dog will get the message that that item is off limits and after a time, will likely avoid it. You have to keep on the dog until he learns not to bother the item. I had a VERY unpleasant surprise the other day, we're dog sitting my son's dog and we just had him neutered so he's finally stopped the marking thing. But my DD brought HER dog over and he apparently is very alpha...and he peed all over the new curtains in my bedroom. New WHITE curtains. Luckily they're washable, and I used vinegar in the rinse water, so it took care of the smell. I now watch him like a hawk and don't let him out of my sight when he's over.

Actually feed a large breed growth formula, not regular puppy food. These are formulated for optimal bone health. As long as you spay her before the first heat cycle, you are still greatly reducing the chances of mammary tumors later in life. In large breed dogs, the first heat cycle can occur anywhere between 6 and 18 months of age. There is no definitive proof that spay/neuter at a certain age increases risk of bone problems later in life. However there is no denying that sex hormones affect growth. We just don't know exactly what, if any, the effect of early spay/neuter is on dogs who are at high risk for joint problems anyway. All giant breed dogs are genetically predisposed to all kinds of orthopedic problems. I personally believe that optimal nutrition throughout life, never allowing the dog to become overweight, and lots of moderate exercise have much more effect on orthopedic health than when the animal is spayed/neutered. The larger the dog, the more difficult the spay. Younger dogs tend to wake up faster and do much better under anesthesia than larger and older dogs. At the shelter, we routinely spay and neuter at 8 weeks, so every animal leaving the shelter is already spayed/neutered.

I need some more information. Are any of your dogs fixed? This could be a problem right there. Have multiple females can cause problems with Alpha female marking, and the girls will end up marking just like boy dogs do. You write "The puppy was never properly housebroken, and as a result, has recently gone from being "half" housebroken, to not wanting to do ANYTHING outside." How come this pup was not housebroken? Can you shed light on this? Curiously, she is only interested in swallowing possible goodies on the street, but not minimally intrigued by the smell of other dogs, including the older two. There is a couple of ways to stop this behavior and it is my opinion that the sooner the better, because poisonings do happen, and I would hate to hear of it. While walking your puppy, if she puts something in her mouth she is not suppose to have IE anything you dont give her, get a travel sized toothpaste tube or a small bottle of tobasco sauce and dab her tongue. Now there are people who have had a cow when I said I dabbed my dogs tongue with toothpaste because YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO SWALLOW IT, well you only need a small amount, the mintier the better, and hopefully you wont need to do it for long, I dabbed my dogs tongue, told him to leave it, maybe three times, since then all he eats is grass. Besides I would rather dab his tongue a half a dozen times then end up with a sick dog because he does not know any better. Some dogs like the taste of toothpaste, try the tobasco sauce. Is there an age at which puppies/dogs become attracted to the smell of other dogs? Is it normal that at 1 year she is not? Your dogs behavior is not normal, but I dont know much of her history, where she comes from, if you take her out everyday for walks or not, or what her daily routine is, the more info you can give, the better. As if on cue, one of my other dogs, has decided to "keep the puppy company"... so now I have two soiling dogs at home, although the 6 year old only does this occasionally during the day, but apparently every night. *I am wondering if the puppy is fixed or not...this might explain your older dogs behavior, best to get the older one into the vet for a check up tho, this could be a sign of things not being right and it happening just when your puppy is doing it might be coincidental. Does anyone know how I can change this? When you say the person at your house takes them out during the day, what does this mean, takes them out back in a fenced yard to romp, or actually takes them for a good long walk. Your puppy might be suffering from what I call the fishbowl disease, where she is not getting enough outside stimulation. Sounds like her walkies is more about eating and sniffing than about walking. Walking with your pup should not be a stroll. it should be the first 5 minutes being duty time and the rest an outright brisk walk. This helps pups focus and helps them pay attention and helps rid them of excessive energy. Please fill in some more of the blanks and lets see if we can get this problem figured out.

From afar, with nothing to go on but your verbal description, and since there is only SPECULATION about the cause of overflowing -- not confirmed facts -- the advice is no more than speculation about the prognosis. A "dip," though it wouldn't be a great thing in a drain line, may or may not make a difference in flow. (Degrees matter.) If the drain overflowed but was not clogged, it seems that it didn't measure up to the capacity needed. This is a common problem. 4" lines are used even when 6" and 8" lines should be installed. A french drain being installed along the foundation MAY help, but the term "french drain" means different things to different people, so the details will matter. For all practical purposes, during a hard rain, it's not going to matter if there is foliage or roots "to absorb water." It will come down to grading and drainage. Rocks around a drain won't necessarily matter either, unless they wash & clog the drain. If debris is clogging the drain opening, a good thing to do would be to install a drain cage. Chances are, though, that your real problem is capacity.

Most dogs will take off without a fence. Some won't, but that has nothing to do with spaying. Dogs like to wander and explore. If you want to let your dog out unsupervised, just build a fence to keep her in.

Sorry I didnt make it clear,the yard is fenced ,and they dont go out un supervised. But the one has no desire to leave the yard or try to run out the door and the un spayed one does. I am having her spayed in any event.

I was meaning that she bolts for the front door and sometimes slips by and gets out where there IS no fence. Ill explain it right sooner or later! LOL!

I'm not sure how old your dog is, but the younger they are the better, for spaying.

I rescued a Siamese a few years ago and she was not spayed. 2 nites of listening to her howl from 7 pm to 7 am.....I rushed in and got her done.

She developed breast cancer a year or so later and died. The vet said that when when a pet is older before being spayed they have a tendency to develop breast cancer.

She was 5 I think if I remember.

Please spay your dog. I don't understand people who don't do it. My dd's step mother insists her dogs not be "in case" she wants them to have a litter of puppies. So, their dogs have had multiple unwanted puppies. Litter before last all died from unknown causes. Something got them in the night because they were left outside without a fence or shelter. Now they have another litter of 8 puppies, unwanted again...she was going to take them to the animal shelter before they were weaned. I never did find out if she did or not. Lauren is upset. She's a big animal lover and keeps trying to tell her to fix them. They thought the puppies were inbred at first because there is a brother sister thing going on, neither fixed. They were the only surviving puppies of one of the unwanted litters from the past....grrrr!

I don't think it's the spaying, it's the training.

But trust me, if you don't get the dog spayed you will have real problems every time she goes into heat. Not to mention all the health problems associated with NOT getting the dog spayed.

It's better to spay than to have every male dog within 20 miles camped outside your door for weeks, whining and peeing!

Our 'best' Westie was never neutered until he was about ten, and only then on the vet's advice. There were no unspayed 'witches' in our neighborhood, and he had a very calm personality. Pip's breeder stipulated that we not neuter him for two years, but I decided we didn't want him put to stud. (Gee, can I say THAT? Yeah, Wildchild, I've run into censorship here before when speaking of female dogs. They can't do 'context'.)

I agree it's the training, and not the spaying. I have a spayed (untrained) poodle that I got from the humane society that is evil. In fact, Evil is her nickname. She was 5 when I got her, and the obedience training I took her to did nothing. There is some truth to the cliche "you can't teach on old dog new tricks". The only reason I kept her was that she is a babydoll in the house, but she wants to run free and kill things outside.
