Cell phone question

My friend is wanting a new phone. She has always used a very plain phone but wants to upgrade to one of the newer phones. She is with Sprint and was thinking about getting the Moment. A lady at the Sprint store told her that if she had never used one of the new smart phones that she would probably have a hard time learning how to use a smart phone. She suggested she buy a Rumor Touch.

That makes no sense to me. I only had 2 phones for many years and they were plain Jane phones. I bought an Iphone and it was so easy to use.

My question is. ...do any of you have the Moment or Rumor Touch and are you happy with them? I told her I would get some opinions here. Thanks for your input.

I have Sprint. I got the Lotus Elite a few months ago. It has all the bells and whistles, but is very user friendly. I got it because it has a larger screen and bigger keys to use.

I have the Moment and just plain love it. I had two Smart phones before this, and didn't care for either of them.

The Moment is not difficult to learn, and the Sprint Store where she gets it should walk her through the basics of setting it up. It's got some wonderful apps that you can EASILY download for free ... including Shop Savy, which lets you 'scan' a bar code of something you're thinking of buying, and if it's in the database it'll pop up with prices of the same item near where you are to confirm whether you're getting the lowest price. Fun! I've used it for a spool of CDs and a memory card for my camera. LOL.

I access both work and personal email accounts with it, and have synced my work calendar to it so it gives a little tone at 15 minutes before my next meeting. I even access Facebook with it! It sure wasn't easy to do that with my other Smart phones.

DH and I both are on Verizon (him: Motorola Droid, me: LG Dare inherited from DH but previously Samsung Flipshot) and we have had absolutely NONE of these problems! When I have a voice mail, I get a white screen with the number (or name, if it's one of my contacts, or "unknown" if it's a blocked number or a call from a multi-line system) is displayed at the top of the screen along with a timestamp, with buttons below saying "check voicemail" or "ignore". If I have a missed call where the caller didn't leave a voicemail, or I "ignore" the voicemail, I get a screen reading "missed call", name/number, timestamp, and buttons for either "ignore" or "add to contacts". If I've "ignored" any of these things, little icons appear on the screen - a little person for a voicemail, an envelope for a waiting text message, or a tiny phone for a missed call. I tap any of those icons to activate it. DH's Droid works about the same way.

i either keep it in the car or carry in my purse. i often use just a small swing coach pack or tiny purse but i usually don't have pockets lol. i also don't trust myself not to lose the phone from a pocket. i have an expensive personal phone and a blackberry storm for work so i am very aware about not loosing them. i have a co-worker who just lost his new blackberry storm we all got for work while he was on a rollercoaster :-) this past weekend, it fell out of his pocket. he's an owners son so i'm sure it's no big deal... most of the yr i have to have my work cell 24/7 (semi drivers on the road) so i'm used to having it. i got rid of the landline a couple yrs ago. the last several yrs i only used it for faxing clients paperwork as it had no long distance since i used a cell for free long distance. since we have no landline i found a puter program that allows me to scan something i want to fax and send it to a fax# saves us $40 a month which was the cheapest line from Sprint-embarq 8 yrs ago. ~ liz

Joann, I don't have one of those, but when I dropped my land line, I had the same thoughts. I don't have mine on me all the time. Honest, it is ok, not to! :) Just think, you didn't have your land line on you all the time either. At home, I have a shelf my phone lives on. At work, it stays in my back pack. While riding my bike, it is in a small pack that hangs on my bike. When in the back yard, it is in a basket, unless I wear something with a pocket. Of course, it is in my purse when I take it along. While driving it is on the shelf between the front seats. :) Hope this helps. Moni

I don't have that kind of phone but two things come to mind... do you have an SD card in your phone? If it's not seated properly it can cause buzzing noises. My daughter had a similar problem. Also, once I had an app (can't remember what it was) and several times during the day that I downloaded it, it would make a strange ring tone. I uninstalled the app, then reinstalled, and it never happened again.

My son recently got an LG Rumor Touch on VirginMobile's prepay and loves it. I played around with it. Other kids/spouses have I Phones/Droids and I dont' want to be locked into an expensive contract, SOOOOO I'm buying a Rumor thru VirginMobile pre-pay. $25/mo. will get me 300 mins. phone time (son got umlimited for $60) with unlimited data, text, etc. I'm gonna be on 3G web access for $25/mo. WOOO-HOOO! Kinda like having a computer in my pocket! (Son picked up GPS and directions on a dirt road in the middle-of-nowhere TX.) When DH's Verizon contract is up soon, he'll be getting a Rumor on VirginMobile pre-pay -- Kick-butt phone for $35/mo. less than he's paying for a non-internet junk phone AND no extra charge for texting!

One caveat that my dd just mentioned to me (I'm due for my 'free' phone on my plan), if you buy a media phone these days, they make you sign up (and pay for) text messaging and internet, whether you want and will use them or not. I definitely do not need those things on my phone, so I'm glad to be forewarned and will be making SURE I don't get sold something that's going to up the price unnecessarily.

Haven't used either of those, but I went from a plain label fairly simple phone to an Android and didn't have any problem learning to use it. All it took was a little time and I absolutely LOVE it! Actually, my Droid is only a so so phone, but it is a great little computer!

You might want to look at Sprint's new Evo phone. Son just got it and loves it. I played around with it a little and it blows my iphone out of the water. Very easy to use.

ohhhhhhhhh, raggiemom ... I'm coveting one of the EVO phones. LOL. As much as I love my Moment, I'm afraid if I go 'look at' an EVO, I will buy it.

I have a Blackberry & love it. But I will admit, smart phones/PDA's are a little more difficult than the average phone. They do so much.

I've had a Blackberry for years. Was with Verizon and now with Sprint. As tempting as the I-phone is, I don't want AT&T service.

I little tidbit of history. The I-phone was offered to Verizon but turned down. It was in the contract that the I-phone was going to retain its own technology and didn't want Verizon to change it. Verizon wanted to make it "their own". Neither company could settle so the I-phone kept searching.

Lucky for AT&T and I-phone.
