don't they have a silver, pewter or white they could foil it with?

A hairdresser who knows the technique of using foil to separate sections for dying could add low-lights and/or highlights and leave some or all of the silver strands in.

It's more expensive than having it dyed one color, but it doesn't need to be touched up as often.

Jann...mine didn't mess with gray...it just went pure white...I hate it...and I keep it brown. But it is so thin.

Maybe you could get one of those caps they used to use for frosting hair (remember when they used to call it that..instead of highlighting) pull a bunch of it through and dye that a darker color...then you'd have a unique frost job...lol

Last time I colored my hair was 14 years ago, when my GS was born. It turned an orangie horrible color. Have a picture of it, holding my GS.

What was your natural hair color before you went grey? I'd try a shade lighter than that and then add some hi and low lights. I know you're looking to color your hair grey..but I don't really think you can do that. Since you're not trying to get away from dying..I'd just try a different color....not all blonde shades should look tacky...but it may be best to try a darker blond with some hi and low lights to help blend the grey...there are so many options to help add shine and stuff too...

I'd talk to a different stylist. They can consider you complexion and hair texture and stuff too. I'm amazed at the different stuff my hair dresser can do... Maybe a semi permanent conditioning gloss would help.

I have white hair. I started turning grey when I was about 21. I used to frost it to disguise it, but I quit doing that when I had an allergic reaction to a perm, which I should have never gotten as I hated the look.

When we cut off all the old color, my hair looked just as frosted as when I had paid to have it done, only the frosting was white agains my ash brown.

Do NOT use those rinses. They turn your hair the color of a US Navy ship -- an ugly, flat, dark grey. Just let it go natural.

For many people, right around the time their hair begins to go gray it also begins to thin quite a bit. Dyeing hair a dark, dark color accentuates the sparseness due to the contrast against the white scalp. Go gray or go a dyed lighter color for the best look with thinness.

There used to be a product marketed to men with thinning hair that was a spray-on black or brown "paint" applied to darken the scalp helping to conceal the lack of lush hair. I believe it was a marketing failure.

I keep a color on my hair. The color doesn't really take as well on the gray so it gives me a kind of frosted look. I.m 71 and have the mousey stuff too and I'm not ready to let it go au natural........

When my dark hair started to grey, Instead of coloring it dark, I kept using a very gentle lightner. It was so gradual, but I ended up blond, and I kept it blond for a lot of years. My hairdresser tried to talk me into letting it go natural gray, but it was salt & pepper gray, not the beautiful white I would see on other women. Then I got very sick in 2002 and was in the hospital for 4 months. When I got home, the color had pretty much grown out and my Dear hairdresser came to my house to give me a much needed hair cut ( she wouldn't take any money for this much needed boost to my self esteem) and all of the previous blond was gone, and I decided to stay naturally gray. My complaint now is my hair is sooooo straight, and perms are just too expensive at a salon and I used to give them to myself, but since I had cataract surgery with lens implants, I'm afraid of what the solution would do to them if I got some in my eyes. My hair is about the same color as Glenda's.I have never colored it or tried to cover the gray.Well,take that back.DD talked me into putting a blonde color on it a few years ago when she was going to beauty school.BIG mistake.Turned it purple and I thought it would never grow out! LOL
I started getting gray in my early thirties.I am fortunate that I inherited my white/silver gray color from my grandmother,and not the dull yellowish grey that a lot of people have.I use to put a rinse on it that washed out every time it was shampooed when it would look kind of dull but that is all I ever used.Don't know if they still make it.It was called "Fanciful",by Rouxe I think,and I used the ultra white minx color.Came in a silver squirt bottle with a pink lid and writing and you just squirt it on towel dried hair and comb it in after you shampoo.It doesn't rub off on your clothes or pillow and washes out next time you shampoo.It just brightens the gray and if it is a little yellow or dull will make it shine.You might try something like that.

If you tried using a glaze? It is like hair color but translucent. It comes tinted or clear. It would add shine and smooth the cuticle for silkier and more managable hair.

How about trying VO5 for silver hair. It's a purple color that may tone the yellow down, without turn you into a "blue haired old lady". LOL

I wish my hair would turn that nice bright white that Moni and Glenda enjoy! But, no, I have the same 'grey rat' color along with some pure white that Jan is complaining about. My mother and both grandmothers had that too. I also have a weird clump of my original dark brown that's never lost color; it's right in front, above my right eye. Even if the rest of my hair did turn white, I'd look like a 'reverse skunk', thanks to that stripe.

So, until they invent something to make ALL my hair a nice white...I'm at the hairdresser every five weeks, getting my hair colored light brown and inhaling those wicked chemicals.

My original hair color was dark brown, but I began to go gray in my thirties. I colored my hair brown for about twenty years, then because my white roots were so visible, I lightened my whole head to blonde for a few years.

When I decided to go gray, I used Roux Fanci-full rinse in "Silver Lining" to blend the lightened hair in with the growing-out-gray roots. This is a temporary rinse that shampoos out, so I used it every time I washed my hair. It comes in several colors, including about five gray/white shades. I would think it would help with brassy looking streaked hair too.

Hi there! I work in a hair salon and my hair is grey and I like it that way. However, my boss (the owner) keeps on at me about having it done with bleach highlights. I have had them done a few times and personally I don't see a difference but then I couldn't care less about what it looks like. Other people have commented on it. I believe what gets done is a bleach and then a toner but I can't be positive.

For those of you wondering what I am doing at a salon when I obviously don't care about my hair, I am the more-or-less manager and generally beneath the stairs in my office, not on general view! LOL

I owned a salon for years and we loved when Clairol came out with Shimmer Lights shampoo. It takes out brassiness on blonde hair and makes drab gray shimmer and shine. Here's a link when you can view it. Even though it says blonde it works amazingly on gray. Other than stripping your hair of all color and adding tint, there is no way to keep up with all the new gray that crops up. This is the easiest method. Follow the directions on the bottle if you get some. If you have a beauty supply place nearby ask them to order it.

I love white hair! I wish mine would turn completely white.

Mine looks like Moni's, including the cut, but it is still brown in the back.

I have never used any coloring stuff, and won't, so I guess I'll continue with that "skunk" effect.

Dottie, do you happen to have a Fantastic Sam's in your area? We just got one here and it is a franchise and has shops in other areas. So far I have only had a haircut there. Best cut I've had in a long time. Tuesday is Senior Day with 20% discount. Don't know how much a perm is, but worth checking on.

My DD asked if I was going to dye my hair when it turns grey. It's honey blond (natural) with a bit of grey at the temples, but heck, at 63 that's pretty good. I used to dye my hair all sorts of blonds and browns but quit in the early 80's.
She mentioned that Grandma looked really old when she quit having her hair dyed. She's 87 now and I don't think she really cares anymore. Anyway I got the impression DD was telling me I would look better if I kept it the blond color it is now.

I really don't have much in a picture with a side view. So, how about a top view? My white is really only around my face.

Wow - ladies, I can't thank you enough for all the helpful advice you've sent my way. I guess I'll look for the shimmer Lights or Silver Lining and see if that brings out the silver. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll try a more expensive salon - LOL.
