(Small) tree suggestion

Does anybody know if there is a dwarf standard type of tree that blooms for the summer season and is hardy for zone 6 Canada? I thought of a tree rose, but they're not hardy here. Then I came across a standard wiegelia (sp?) but the blooms are short lived. Maybe no such tree exists? I just want something pretty for two corners of my yard.

I am not certain there is a tree, large or small, that blooms for two months at a time or longer. Have you looked at the kousa dogwoood? They bloom later than most of the others ,which ususally bloom in the spring. I always wondered why they haven't been able to come up with a cultivar that was long blooming either.

Siberian Pea? Ask at a local nursery.

maries1120 - despite the name, Mountain Ash is not a true Ash (Fraxinus), it is a Sorbus, so EAB would not affect it. Search under Sorbus and you will see there is a wide variety of species and cultivars. But I don't know whether they would be suitable for your region.

Wow, thanks for the recommendations to all of you. I do like the idea of Ribes, it has flowers similar to fuschia and the birds will love it. Many of your other recommendations I planted at my parents' home during the last few years, so I can easily make cuttings. I might have to grow some of those full sun species in pots up on our balcony where some spots get full sun year round. Carpenteria may be nice, too. Some white to brighten up the shady spot. Calycanthus is a nice flower morphology, and I love the fragrance of it. Yerba Buena would be a nice groundcover under the trees by the street, and again, I like that it has fragrance. It will like the fog in Summer, too. Phacelia campanularia is one of my favorite flowers, the blue color is amazing. I only worry about the kids in the neighborhood touching it, it gave me a pretty bad dematitis a few months ago when I collected seeds from them. I've been trying to estimate how much sun that area will get in the peak of summer, in June. I think one strip will be filtered/dappled shade, and half of one will be in direct sunlight for a few hours when the sun is highest in the sky. The Las Pilitas site is basically my encyclopedia for getting info about plants, especially their hummingbird and butterfly plant lists. That, google image searches and the online Jepson manual. And even though they aren't natives, I've always wanted to grow Hellebores, so maybe that will go in somewhere too. Thanks again, and happy gardening.

"Tiny Towers" Italian Cypress are superb for tall and narrow. They don't get gigantic like the big ones do. Spearmint Juniper is also great. Beautiful green color and takes to shearing very easily. "Purple Pony" purple leaf plum is also excellent as a small tree. Only gets about 12' tall. Doesn't get huge like the big ones do... There are also some smaller Cassias that do well as small trees and have nice flowers as well and are only briefly deciduous.

I'm not sure about the zones it'd be good in, but I love my Crepe Myrtle! We've always kept it pruned, so it's not real big.

I was going to suggest crape myrtle also! I think they are zones 6-9, depending on the variety.

Crapes bloom best in sunny locations (the sunnier, the more blooms). They are practically carefree, except for occasional pruning. The flowers range from whites to purples to all shades of pinks/reds, depending on the variety. And the bark is peely, so it provides interest as well.

I had to find some small trees because the power company took down my ashes. I live in Mn so they should be ok for Canada
Hardiness zone in Minneapolis, Mn is 3 or 4.

Service Berry
Amur Maple (can be trees, multi trunk trees or bushes)
Flowering Crab
Japanese lilac tree

I think none of them reach more than 20' or so.

I also got a euonymous, not the typical burning bush variety, that was "made" into a tree, max height=17'.

I first thought of Dogwood but didn't know if it was a good choice for your zone. Seems there are many varieties and some would be suitable. I do know this is a pretty ornamental and does not get too tall.
