We are with State Farm- it was how my parents are with. When I moved from their car insurance policy to my own, I stayed with State Farm. Since my parents were with them for so long, I automatically got to keep the "no cancellation" clause that was in their car insurance policy. The few times I have shopped around, we could not get a better deal than what we have for the cars and house. What made the difference for us was moving to WV from Atlanta. Our insurance premiums were cut almost in half!

No help here. We're with Hartford for car and home insurance. Just switched from Allstate and saved ourselves $1000. a year on the vehicle insurance (home stayed the same).

lydia1959....well....I goofed. I called to make sure the home rebuilding calculator had us insured correctly. I think it should be about $25k higher......the agent comes back saying our homes rebuilding cost is Twice as much as we're insured for. (note: Dh is a commercial builder & knows what it costs). So now it's on my record that if I don't insure it for TWICE as much, I've agreed to be under insured. Yikes!!! So it will DOUBLE my bill!!!!!! I called 2 other agencies....and they're calculators say I'm already "over insured" by 25%. My fault.....I had to ask....and now it's documented....I'm up a creek, unless I pay double!!!

I had been with Nationwide forever...since I was a teenager back in the late 60s. A few years ago, we had our stucco covered block home clad in vinyl siding. Nationwide's underwriters changed our coverage to say we had a frame house. Our premium more than doubled! We refused to accept their ridiculous assertion. We even pointed to Nationwide's own website where in they listed the requirements necessary to be considered a masonry house (we met those requirements) and they still refused to change it.

After forty years, we moved our residencial and multi vehicle coverage to State Farm and my oh my...we saved so much money! Not only on our homeowner's (btw- State Farm agreed that we owned a masonry house) but we stopped paying on a term life insurance policy that was worth virtually nothing and moved all of our vehicles over, too. Our car insurance was nearly cut in half!

Good luck with your pickle. Once the bureaucracy of those big insurance companies comes to a conclusion, they are immovable.

I've been with Allstate for over 20 years and like them very much. I have worked for State Farm and Farmer's - they are really good, too.

I've been with Allstate a long time which I liked, except for the worthless agent I had. Then switch to AAA for the cars, which I would advise against. I've been back with Allstate for 7 years (a different office) and like them a lot. However, I heard they are raising their rates by double digits percentage wise, and if that is true, I'll be shopping around.

By the way, not all Allstate offices charge the same rates for the same coverage.

I have my house and car insured with Farm Bureau. I think it might be just in Iowa. When I moved from CA to Iowa and got many times more insurance than I had in CA, my insurance rate was cut in half. I am very happy with my insurance and my agent knows me by name.

We have Palisades for our auto policy--they only insure very safe drivers, only in NJ, so that probably doesn't help you any. Cumberland (formerly Chester County) carries our homeowner's insurance on both homes.

I know you said you don't want an agent, but truly, it's the best way to get the best policy for your needs at the best price. It was our agent who found us those companies. I've priced auto insurance many times, just to see if I could find a lower price, and no one, not even the 'cheap' companies that advertise on TV can touch the the rates my agent has found for us. On top of that, if you have an agent, and you do have a problem/claim--you have someone at your side, helping you navigate. I'd NEVER ever want to be navigating the insurance industry without a good agent.

And don't forget, even if one of us has a good company and good rates, you might have entirely different rates from the same company. DD had Palisades for a bit, and was happy with them. Then she hit a lean year and asked our agent to see if she could find her a lower policy. She did, with a different company (one with a very good reputation). I called and asked her to get us a quote from them--because of differences in our situation, the new company was much higher for use. Yet another reason it's a good idea to have a good agent. They know where to find the best deals for youo.

But if you still don't want one, at least give your state insurance commissioner a call. They can tell you which companies are permitted to write policies in your state, which are the cheapest, which have more complaints, etc. And remember, you always want to check to see if a new company is permitted to write policies in NY state--if they aren't, try to stear clear of them.

I'm with Farmers. I'm moderately happy with them but I love, Love, LOVE my agent! I'm married to him. :-)

Wawanesa.....We have both our home and our vehicles with them. We're very happy. We have gotten a lot of our friends and family to switch. They have great rates, and while I have not had to use the homeowners policy, we have used the vehicle insurance, and they are great...they don't make you take aftermarket parts, and they pay to have your vehicle fixed right.

azzalea......I just meant I wasn't going to call a specific agent long distance. I also didn't know different offices could charge different rates.

Just got an email: American Family Insurance is beating the price of my current policies. I wasn't expecting that....by $275 a year! & I can up the deductible on the house & save a total of $521.10!!!

Keep the info coming.....I feel a little overwhelmed at the moment...

Just to add--if you do decide to go with an agent, it should definitely NOT be someone you have to call long distance. You'd want to choose a good agent, in your neighborhood. They handle insurance from many different insurance companies, and as I said, will gladly do the research for you to find the best deal for your specific situation. The agents don't charge different prices--they don't charge you at all, they're paid by the insurance company. But as I said, even so, the insurance my agent found me is lower than anything I can find on my own, and it's with a very, very good company.

As you're researching, can't hurt to check in with an agent in your town--just to see what they can find for you. Although, you sound as if you're doing some pretty good research on your own. Good luck

We recently switched from All State to Farm Bureau and very happy with it. Better coverage and lower premiums.

I'm very surprised that American Family can beat anyone's prices! I just switched last month from AF after 29 years of NO claims. My rates just kept going up and up and up.

I now am with West Bend Mutual, a regional company, and pay less for 3 cars and the house than I did for just the house with American Family.

The agent said it's so much cheaper because they are regional; so we're not paying for hurricane and earthquake damage. Better coverage, less money!!! Should've switched years ago.

We were with Allstate for 20+ years. Last summer I decided to shop around and boy was I happy I did. Almost everyone I got a quote from was cheaper for the same coverage. We went with AAA and saved almost half!

Thanks a lot, peeps! I've now spent two hours filling out various agency forms and discover that FOR THE SAME COVERAGE I HAVE, there's very little difference out there. The agencies come back with cheaper quotes, and then you have to ADD the extras your current policy has. Comes out the same or more in our case for our auto policy.

juellie -- I'm intrigued by your insurer. It's appealing to think we could buy coverage from someone who doesn't cover places that get hit with violent weather all the time. (I don't live two inches off a waterway; I don't want to pay to have someone rebuild every other year.)
