Bamboo knitting needles

I needed some new knitting needles, and bought bamboo.

I love them...anyone else using them?

I have some Clover bamboo double pointed needles and straight needles that are great. The dpns are the really thin sizes, and they have bent from being used but still work fine. I have one set of clover bamboo circulars which work well, and those points are duller than the dpns. For Christmas, my sister gave me an inexpensive large set of short bamboo dpns. They look like they are raw, no finish on them. They are a little rougher at the tips, but with use and with rubbing some hand cream into them, they smooth up just fine. If you don't need the length, try short (4 to 5 inches) dpns. They are so much easier to use.

Are you using Sashay yarn, the yarn you "open up" & what we found easy is to use bamboo knitting needles(actually I complained they were too long) size 9Girlfriend fixed that since sharp on both ends she cut through right in center of each 1 & smoothed the cut & glued about 1/4 in into a small spool) come in pkg at Joanne's or Michael's the unpainted spools are for making spool dolls-legs & arms. this is the 1 inch long size) glue cut end of needle into spool & do the 2nd one so you have a set. So nice in my hands & nothing gets 'caught" Aluminum needles the yarn slips off of. I got very unset with them & that is when GF tried the bamboo. So much better & easier. Have a cork with hole in it to put on end of work should you put it down or you will lose stitches, or a little thing they sell can be used, looks almost like pencil topper. Step 1 tie a very tight knot in end of yarn then OPEN up at least a couple of feet of yarn. Look at it carefully, the more filled in side is NOT worked so step 2 put on a loop skip 1 loop & pull up 2nd loop, continue until you have 6 to 8 loops on needle(6 will be little thinner than 8) When desired number of loops on needle grab your 2nd needle & hold it in other hand like you are crossing them with the 2nd needle behind the original 1 & slide it under 1st stitch on needle & pick up 2nd loop from needles & side it under the 1 original needle & off so you have 1 stitch on 2nd needle, continue until all stitches are on same needle & start over. Make as long as you like & then your last 6-8 stitches you will cast off which means you will get 2 stitches on 2nd needle & slide the 1 closest to spool over top of other stitch to cast off leaving 1 stitch on 2nd needle & do that until you have 1 loop left on 2nd needle, hang on to that or whole thing can go!!! take the remaining yarn(try not to have it opened up when you are near the end or else twist it back together while holding onto that needle with 1 stitch on it cut 5 in so have enough to tie knot &,pull the yarn through & knot tightly & pull up through the scarf a couple of rows so people don't sit & fiddle with it when wearing it or it could come untied & unravel. Hope this helps. You can use whatever needles you have but I just told you all my little secrets! So have fun with it .If you are smart you will finish a row & put cork on as you can drop stitches or lose them all together. Easy to fix but would be kind of hard to explain on here. Jan

Here's the thing-- you are totally at the mercy of the whim of the security guards at your particular check-point. Someone decides metal is okay, another, no. Someone decides a circular could be used to strangle someone, it never dawns on the next. I saw an incident recently where they wouldn't let a woman take her knitting needles on board, wouldn't let her retreive her baggage because it had already been checked (you go through security AFTER you've checked your baggage), wouldn't hold them for her at the front of the plane, and told her (in the nicest way possible), that it was her problem. I didn't stick around to see what happened so I don't know the outcome. And remember, no one without a ticket can now come with you through security, so you can't give them to someone to take back home for you. Keep in mind-- you you need to check them at each airport you'll be using-- so that's at least 2, coming and going, and more if you're changing planes. So I would say, unless you're willing to lose the needles, possibly have to throw them away, maybe the best idea is (oh how it pains me to say this!!!) just not to knit for those few hours. The one suggestion I would make is that if you absolutely can't resist, print out the TSA list and take it with you in case you have a problem

socks12345, no I just got my order the other day and was really excited, and thought I'd share. I hope I didn't violate any rules or anything, I'm new here, and a fairly novice knitter. I just was really amazed at how cheap I got them for. At my local yarn store (22 miles one way) I have to pay upwards of 3 dollars for a set of 2 and 5 dollars for a set of 4, and have yet to find a set of 5 in one package. I just thought that if anyone else lived in a town with little to no yarn supplies they might like it. Sandra, I tried ebay but I didn't find as good a deal as I did at the eknittingneedles.com site. We're a single income family until my kiddo starts school fall 2010, and I just really couldn't see paying 4 bucks a set. I found a few cheap lots, but the pics showed metal needles with worn finish, and some lots stated have a set of 3 dpns, and well if I had one dpn that was lonely of that size.. LOL well I might have concidered it. I'll check out 5 seasons on ebay though. who knows they might have some great deal on something. I just couldn't pass up on 2 bucks a set of needles at the other site. BTW I also found a store online that sells caron natura for 99 cents a skein! it's terrisyarnsandcrafts.com they sell other yarns too at a good price.

I have some old nylon plastic circulars I bought used on Ebay, so I do not know what they are really made of or by whom, but I love them. The "hip" at the join between the needle and the cable is so gradual and smooth that my yarn never hangs up there. And my hands do not get cold with these needles. I also like metal needles but in the winter my hands get cold using them. I have made larger knitting needles of wood dowel, and they work great, especially for slippery yarns. I have not tried bamboo. But you might try making the bamboo more slippery by rubbing them with waxed paper.

I bought a set of bamboo needles on Ebay. They're lightweight and feel good in my fingers, I like them better than metal or pastic/nylon. Years ago I bought a set of interchangeable circular needles-very handy. But metal-

I have a few dpn sets that I use for sock knitting,they're great - flexible and smooth, yet they don't slip out of the stitches as easily as my metal ones.

I love them! They aren't slippery like alluminum.
I have the nylon flexible with the bamboo point ends. They quickly became my all-time favorites! They are especially great for big projects because you don't have to suport the weight of the project. That makes it easier on your wrists.

Woo Hooo. hello all, this is an addict of bamboo knitting needles. i like all kinds of bamboo needles because of their natural feeling of warmth.
Last week, i got a large lot of DP pins from a chineses seller at unbeatable price. LOL. my husband joke me a bargain hunter.
:p BTW, my bargain is got from 8season-knitting, anyone have use their products before?

I love my bamboo needles - straights, dpn's and circulars. But my son gave me a set of KnitPicks Interchangeables for Christmas in the Harmony wood and I love those too. My bamboos are great when I want something with a little drag to keep the stitches on the needle and I wouldn't want to be without them in my knitting bag.

I use the Harmonys too and really like them. They're great for lace and they're so pretty!

I have soooo many bamboo knitting needles, but then I bought the Harmony wood set of interchangeable circular needles from Knit Picks, and they're my favorite. I also just bought the set of the Harmony wood straight needles (I can't resist a sale!).

Another bamboo lover here too, I have the knitpick harmony interchangeable too and boy it's hard to pick between the two as to which I love best really. The harmony are a little slipperyer (is that a word?), but not as bendy when using the smaller (0,1 and 2) sizes. And I've learned to watch for the cable on the bamboo when buying circular. Some of the cables on the cheaper needles are REALLY THICk and cheap (you get what you pay for). I was disappointed though when I bought the interchangeable I wasn't knitting socks and then became addicted to socks, and the interchangeable don't come small enought for socks so had to purchase more just for socks (LOVE knitting with circular needles).

ANYWAY my plastic and aluminum needles sit there lonely as I never use them now, only my bamboo, and at that, even my bamboo straights sit there lonely as I basically use just my circular!

I love them! I don't think I will ever knit with anything else again. I like the feel of them in my hands and the fact that my knitting doesn't pull out of the kneedles. Vique.

I love my bamboo needles - unfortunately my cats do too! I have to be extra careful about leaving my knitting behind in my chair. Once they have tooth marks on the tips - they don't work nearly as well.

After reading this post I got to thinking I would like to try bamboo needles. Well I can't pick up and go shopping at the drop of a hat ( i don't shop at all yjanks to poor vision and not being able to walk very far). I remembered a package of bamboo skewers I had bought for another project and found they were as thick as a size 7 needle. I sharpened the the end and now use them to knit My cish cloths.
