OK, I think I've come through the thyroidectomy OK. It was touch and go afterward because of a sudden case of hypocalcemia, and I was rushed to the hospital as a critical patient. Three more days in the hospital. Now I have to just get over the paralyzed vocal cord. That I've been told will probably be OK soon. The one thing, I have not had a cigarette since the 9th!! I know that sometimes you want to cigarette, no matter what. Since the surgery, I have had a few small pangs but mostly, it's been, I'm never smoking again! I did have an abnormal CXR but don't have any idea what it shows. The report is supposed to go to my PC but she is off this week. Her office told me that if it was serious, that someone would contact me. But, the smoking cessation was mainly my body not wanting to smoke. I hope it stays that way. Wish me luck! The other positive - my blood sugar has been oh so normal, without taking my diabetes meds!! The Doc told me that my thyroid was in pretty bad shape and she had a very hard time removing it. I guess it was affecting a lot of things. As soon as I woke up from surgery I could tell I was feeling better. Let's hope that lasts!

Again, thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers from my initial post. But I just had to do the Happy Dance that I'm not smoking!

Glad to hear it's over and you're on the mend.I had mine removed quite awhile ago,couldn't talk above a whisper for awhile,but that passed and i'm fine.I had a bell to ring if i needed anything.

Don't rush trying to talk,it will come in due time.Just get lots of rest,taking it easy whenever you can.Please don't pick up the cigarettes again,they can and will cause more problems than the thyroid did,and i don't think you want to go there.

Kristi, When I first read your description of the maggots, I thought it sounded like the maggots of what I call house flies. You see, I grew up as the daughter of shrimper/fishermen, and obviously, we cleaned and dealt with a lot of fish and shrimp. House flies are attracted to anything that smells strongly, and Amaryllis bulbs that are rotting have a very similar horrible smell. That will attract those flies. They will feed on the rotted material and deposit their 'eggs', thus resulting in maggots that you describe. Speaking of bulb rot, I purchased some of the 3 for the price of one bulbs last year. One of those, Mambo, had a rotten spot on it. I am the world's worst, I know, about being curious and wanted to try something different. I decided not to complain about the bulb. I cut away the rot and noted some bulbils growing inside. I let the bulb air dry rather than using Captan. In fact, I sort of lost track of the bulb for awhile and just recently found it again. The bulb was still in fine shape, so I put the bulb in a little clear cup with an inch or two of soil mix in it and watered it to see what happend. Sure enough, there is a new bulb forming beside the mother bulb. I want to plant the whole bulb but I am simply too curious about the little growths inside the bulb. It's too hard to explain without a picture, so as soon as my camera battery is charged, I will take some and upload them for you to see. In short, after over 6 months of not being planted and hidden away (lost), the mother bulb looks fantastic and I await to see what happens to all those little things that look like bulbils that are forming inside. I thought about cutting the bulb, but I decided not to do so because I wanted to see what was happening inside the damaged bulb. Pictures later...

It is so special the first time you hold that precious grandchild. I was fortunate and was there at the birth of my first grandson. Ray: Forgive me--maybe this answer is too long, but if you are really interested in helping your tree, maybe it will help. Two bits of advice. First, how to work high in your tree: Given the height of the tree we are talking about, how you handle it may depend on the kind of physical shape you are in and/or your fear of heights. I am an "old hand" at cutting out double leaders or "coaxing" new ones. I have been tending about 20 acres of spruces and pines for many years. Even now at age 70 I am well able to climb up tall pines and work, but I dont do much any more because most of my trees are now 80 feet tall or more and 20 to 30 feet to the first limb. But for many years I climbed these trees, even after I had pruned off the lower limbs, using a ladder to get up to the first whorl. But there is a limit to how thin a top you might want to climb up into, depending on how much you weigh. Here is my technique. First, you should get two strong straps, something like 4 feet long with a loop at one end and an easy to use clip at the other. I use two to tie around me and the trunk of the tree to be double safe and for comfort. Using these straps I am not only safely tied in, but I can use both hands to work. As I climb the tree I carry a 20 inch bow saw, and if a limb or two obstructs my progress, I cut it out of the way. Then when I get to where I need to work, the bow saw is a good tool for making some kinds of cuts. I may also carry up a pole saw with a hook to anchor it on branches as I go up. I use this if I need to reach higher than I can climb. To shorten the small banches in a whorl, you can use simple hand clippers you can carry in your pocket. Climbing these trees may seem like a lot of work, but I had a wonderful time doing this--swaying in the tree tops on a windy day, enjoying the view of all the surrounding trees from a tree top. What exhilarating fun!! I usually did not want to climb down!! Anyway, another option for trees about as tall as yours is working from the ground with pole pruning saws. Most that you can buy in a store are not long enough. I have a bunch of 6 and 10 foot Azel pruning poles I got from Ben Meadows. These are bolt together aluminum poles, and you can work fairly easily with lengths of 20 or 26 feet, and if you are strong, and patient, maybe another 10 feet more. But these are fairly expensive, as are the pruning heads to go with them, so climbing may be your best option if you just have one or a few trees to tend to. Also, working from the ground to do "surgery" is not really good, because your cuts are not so precise. I use my poles mostly for pruning off dead limbs after the trees are rather tall. Now, for the second bit of advice: what is best for your tree. I really donÂt like the splint idea, partly because I donÂt think it really improves the final result much, if at all, and second because it is much more difficult, especially if trying to work at the top of a tall tree. If you go with the pruning/shortening method, I think it is best to wait at least a year, and maybe two is better. And, if you decide to climb, if you wait, the top of the tree where you need to work will be stronger and easier to climb up to. At first, using this pruning method, the top of the tree will not seem to be really straight--there will be a very noticeable "crook." But over time this will straighten out, and as the trunk thickens, and the side branches grow, you will hardly notice it. Also, using this pruning method, just to give a little more detail, it is especially important to really shorten or completely cut off, any branch in the whorl that is basically opposite to the one you select for the leader. This is because an opposite branch will have an tendency to deflect the leader, so it will not straighten up quite so well. When you shorten the branches in the whorl, if you wait just one year, cut back one "node,Â if you wait two years, cut back one or two nodes, depending on what seems to give the best result (advantage to the new leader). --Spruce

That's the opposite of what your "thinking brain" is doing to you now. Now, you're thinking about it and worried about it, and anticipating a let-down, not an incredible loving experience. Your brain is getting in the way of your body, and your body is still inexperienced and learning. Talking to your doctor about switching methods of birth control is a good step, but above that, don't think about "the problem" so much. Thinking about it will magnify it, not solve it. Next time you and your husband have the right opportunity, try putting on some romantic music, light a few candles, then turn your brain off. Talk with your husband about pleasant, lightweight things until any worries in the back of your head are gone. While you're talking, enjoy looking at your husband, and appreciate all of the attractive qualities he has that make you tingle. You want to re-build the emotional intimacy before even starting on the physical intimacy. Once you're both relaxed, concentrate on your feelings -- the texture of his skin, the sensations on yours. Take what's feeling good to you and really experience that. Feel, rather than think about, the experience, and let your body, not your brain, guide you. It may also help to tune some of your senses out (listening to the music, visualizing colors or textures) and some of your senses in (his touch, smell of his skin). But above all, don't involve the thinking, rational part of your brain past the part where you decide "yes".

Thanks Kathi! I know the CXR wasn't good and I'm axious about it. But if it is smoking related, I don't want to make it worse.

Oh, thanks for the tips on my voice. I was wondering about that. My Dr said it might be a while but she and the other Drs were trying to get my electrolytes stable first.

Sue, I ended up with an HP. Of course it was an impulse buy since my old one crashed on me Sat and I just couldn't go without the KT. I'm not keen on Dell, and I had a Toshiba before, so wanted a change. We'll see what happens. The old Toshiba had an AMD processor. This one has the Intel. I think the Intel is much quieter and I'm enjoying that part. I'm just not OK with purchasing an HP laptop - just old habit, I guess. They used to be good machines. Here's hoping...

Glad you are not smoking....DH is a smoker and just really can't seem to stop.....I try not to say anything...he has not had a thyroid in years and all I want to say is that if they put you on meds for not having one.........PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take the meds (dh) is supposed to take shythroid (sp) and does if I act like a momma if I don't he will not take it....then the moods come...first (and this is when I can really tell he has not been taking it) he starts crying on commercials and movies...next stage....he is wayyyyyyyyyyy over loving to me....now I laugh at that because he treats me soo great but when he starts telling me a million times aday how much he loves me and what is so wonderful about me...I KNOW he is not taking his meds.......but then if I don't get him on them FAST after the loving....comes the as I call him THE EVIL BRIAN.....just mean hateful etc.....I have a g/f who also takes what he does and she said she learned fast fast to take hers as the mood swings are awful (just like his)...anyways sorry so long want you to be able to talk soon but want you to take whatever thyroid meds you are supposed to LOL

Glad you are doing well. I have not had a cigarette in twelve years. After all that time, I still, occasionally, get one of those, "oh, golly, I realllllly want a cigarette" feelings. They are fleeting, and I know if I "give in" I'll buy a pack in the morning. Just know you can work through the desire. Keep on healing and getting stronger.

Thanks again, everyone. Right now I am doing OK but as I get better, I can feel the urges coming back. I'm working on it since I really can't afford to go back to smoking. I'll keep you guys posted - give me a kick every now and then just to be sure I'm still behaving.

gneegirl jolly rancher makes a sugarless version that's not bad to eat if you get the urge to smoke...i've also heard having something to do with your hands can help...

I was so happy to see this post; I quit smoking with the aid of Chantix after only 12 days. It has made a huge change, for the positive, in my life. I can look back now (it's been a year and a half) and see that smoking was really a mental thing...in my head.

Those times when you think you'd "like" a cigarette will pass quickly if you tell yourself in your head that "I don't do that anymore". It reminds me of how Tony Robbins says that once you make a "real" decision and stick to it you know all the other things it takes to make that decision come true. Many times when I've thought I'd like a cigarette what I really needed was a break. Just to sit down and take a break or have a snack or walk away from what I was doing. I was substituting a cigarette from just a break in general. I think you are making that connection now. If you can only be mentally aware of that as your body is getting used to getting the nicotine out of its system you will be a winner.

And I hope I'm not offending any smokers but I really do feel good about myself when I see others going outside in the freezing weather or rain to have a smoke. Or having to run to the store because they're out of cigarettes. I'm done with that! I wouldn't even bother counting the days or months but I happen to know it was just before Christmas last year. It's not important how many days....I just know that I dont do that anymore. And I really sincerely wish this success for you also. Please keep posting! BTW, I am diabetic too!
