OK, I think I've come through the thyroidectomy OK. It was touch and go afterward because of a sudden case of hypocalcemia, and I was rushed to the hospital as a critical patient. Three more days in the hospital. Now I have to just get over the paralyzed vocal cord. That I've been told will probably be OK soon. The one thing, I have not had a cigarette since the 9th!! I know that sometimes you want to cigarette, no matter what. Since the surgery, I have had a few small pangs but mostly, it's been, I'm never smoking again! I did have an abnormal CXR but don't have any idea what it shows. The report is supposed to go to my PC but she is off this week. Her office told me that if it was serious, that someone would contact me. But, the smoking cessation was mainly my body not wanting to smoke. I hope it stays that way. Wish me luck! The other positive - my blood sugar has been oh so normal, without taking my diabetes meds!! The Doc told me that my thyroid was in pretty bad shape and she had a very hard time removing it. I guess it was affecting a lot of things. As soon as I woke up from surgery I could tell I was feeling better. Let's hope that lasts!

Again, thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers from my initial post. But I just had to do the Happy Dance that I'm not smoking!

Glad to hear it's over and you're on the mend.I had mine removed quite awhile ago,couldn't talk above a whisper for awhile,but that passed and i'm fine.I had a bell to ring if i needed anything.

Don't rush trying to talk,it will come in due time.Just get lots of rest,taking it easy whenever you can.Please don't pick up the cigarettes again,they can and will cause more problems than the thyroid did,and i don't think you want to go there.

Wow Java, you are just getting all the patients sent to you this year! I hate to see it...so frustrating isn't it? I'm glad you're posting and sharing all the details with everyone. I think there are a lot of people who read and learn from these postings, but don't post their own responses. I hate you had to cut off the bloom! It looks like you were able to catch it in time and you've done a great job removing the nasty part. I will recommend what I have learned here from Jodi and Maria to use a cotton ball and wipe the bulb all over with a mix of 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide. Allow it to dry for a while and then mix a little water with Captan to make a "paste" of sort and paint the entire bulb with it and allow it to dry for a week or at least a few days. I have found this method very effective and you'll know because no more red will be present after the process. Then I would pot it in a very well draining mix, but very high in the pot so that moisture or medium doesn't touch the part you just removed. The tomatoes have nothing to do with it. Oddly enough, acidic fruits do not make your stomach more acid. More likely it was the lamb and I am wondering how much was a little. Don't eat late at all. Eat a LIGHT dinner EARLY. This problem by the way is why agrarian cultures eat a big lunch and small, snack-like dinner. The post-industrial commuter culture is what causes acid reflux to be a fairly common problem, that used to be rare. Just as Hoosier Cherokee recommended, SIGNIFICANTLY cut the fat in your diet. Fat is hard to digest. Of course you need fat in your diet; give preference to natural, unsaturated fats like those in nuts and whole grains. Olive oil is good and Canola oil OK. Don't eat too much fried food; frying saturates the fat, which is why if you reuse oil too many times it solidifies. Eat more tomatoes, and actually even better, significantly more LEAFY vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, and other fibrous vegetables. These will slow down your digestion. Eliminate alcohol until the problem is solved, and drink only in moderation thereafter. Drink filtered water, preferably after boiling it (tea, for instance). Don't drink sugary drinks either. Sleep so that your upper body is higher than your lower body (figure out how to do this...you might be able to buy a wedge to put under your matresses). It doesn't have to be much. Gravity is what keeps the acid in your stomach and not up in your throat--most of the time, except when you are sleeping. Your esophagus will need to heal, or the problem will get worse. Right now the sphincter separating the esophagus from your stomach is probably weak and too loose. I suggest NOT taking antacids or proton inhibitors (Prilosec, Zantac, etc). The reason is that altering the pH of your GI tract can cause your intestinal flora to change for the worse. The acid-loving "good" bacteria will die off, and nastier bacteria will take their place. I am speaking from personal experience as pill-pushing doctors perscribed proton inhibitors for "acid indigestion" that turned out to be a hiatal hernia that nearly killed me. Contrary to their advice that proton inhibitors are "safe" and "have no side effects", among other things they interfere with digestion and kill off the "friendly" bacteria in the gut, making it more congenial to harmful bacteria which cause MORE GI problems.

I totally agree with the previous posters. DO NOT let her get a Hysterectomy/Fallopian tube(s)Ovaries removed, she will go into full flegged Menopause. She will be worse off, because then, she'll have to take hormones and those in any amount is not a very good outcome. I, as well as countless other women, have had a procedure done, called "Edometrial Ablation". It was for me, the best thing I ever did. My heavy bleeding subsided and after that, I only had a few periods and then nothing, but I'm 55 years old, so I'm pretty much done with periods, Thank God!!! Please have her look into this procedure and if her Dr. won't consider it, then find one that will!!! Good luck to you and yours!!!

That's the opposite of what your "thinking brain" is doing to you now. Now, you're thinking about it and worried about it, and anticipating a let-down, not an incredible loving experience. Your brain is getting in the way of your body, and your body is still inexperienced and learning. Talking to your doctor about switching methods of birth control is a good step, but above that, don't think about "the problem" so much. Thinking about it will magnify it, not solve it. Next time you and your husband have the right opportunity, try putting on some romantic music, light a few candles, then turn your brain off. Talk with your husband about pleasant, lightweight things until any worries in the back of your head are gone. While you're talking, enjoy looking at your husband, and appreciate all of the attractive qualities he has that make you tingle. You want to re-build the emotional intimacy before even starting on the physical intimacy. Once you're both relaxed, concentrate on your feelings -- the texture of his skin, the sensations on yours. Take what's feeling good to you and really experience that. Feel, rather than think about, the experience, and let your body, not your brain, guide you. It may also help to tune some of your senses out (listening to the music, visualizing colors or textures) and some of your senses in (his touch, smell of his skin). But above all, don't involve the thinking, rational part of your brain past the part where you decide "yes".

Thanks Kathi! I know the CXR wasn't good and I'm axious about it. But if it is smoking related, I don't want to make it worse.

Oh, thanks for the tips on my voice. I was wondering about that. My Dr said it might be a while but she and the other Drs were trying to get my electrolytes stable first.

Sue, I ended up with an HP. Of course it was an impulse buy since my old one crashed on me Sat and I just couldn't go without the KT. I'm not keen on Dell, and I had a Toshiba before, so wanted a change. We'll see what happens. The old Toshiba had an AMD processor. This one has the Intel. I think the Intel is much quieter and I'm enjoying that part. I'm just not OK with purchasing an HP laptop - just old habit, I guess. They used to be good machines. Here's hoping...

Glad you are not smoking....DH is a smoker and just really can't seem to stop.....I try not to say anything...he has not had a thyroid in years and all I want to say is that if they put you on meds for not having one.........PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take the meds (dh) is supposed to take shythroid (sp) and does if I act like a momma if I don't he will not take it....then the moods come...first (and this is when I can really tell he has not been taking it) he starts crying on commercials and movies...next stage....he is wayyyyyyyyyyy over loving to me....now I laugh at that because he treats me soo great but when he starts telling me a million times aday how much he loves me and what is so wonderful about me...I KNOW he is not taking his meds.......but then if I don't get him on them FAST after the loving....comes the as I call him THE EVIL BRIAN.....just mean hateful etc.....I have a g/f who also takes what he does and she said she learned fast fast to take hers as the mood swings are awful (just like his)...anyways sorry so long want you to be able to talk soon but want you to take whatever thyroid meds you are supposed to LOL

Glad you are doing well. I have not had a cigarette in twelve years. After all that time, I still, occasionally, get one of those, "oh, golly, I realllllly want a cigarette" feelings. They are fleeting, and I know if I "give in" I'll buy a pack in the morning. Just know you can work through the desire. Keep on healing and getting stronger.

Thanks again, everyone. Right now I am doing OK but as I get better, I can feel the urges coming back. I'm working on it since I really can't afford to go back to smoking. I'll keep you guys posted - give me a kick every now and then just to be sure I'm still behaving.

gneegirl jolly rancher makes a sugarless version that's not bad to eat if you get the urge to smoke...i've also heard having something to do with your hands can help...

I was so happy to see this post; I quit smoking with the aid of Chantix after only 12 days. It has made a huge change, for the positive, in my life. I can look back now (it's been a year and a half) and see that smoking was really a mental thing...in my head.

Those times when you think you'd "like" a cigarette will pass quickly if you tell yourself in your head that "I don't do that anymore". It reminds me of how Tony Robbins says that once you make a "real" decision and stick to it you know all the other things it takes to make that decision come true. Many times when I've thought I'd like a cigarette what I really needed was a break. Just to sit down and take a break or have a snack or walk away from what I was doing. I was substituting a cigarette from just a break in general. I think you are making that connection now. If you can only be mentally aware of that as your body is getting used to getting the nicotine out of its system you will be a winner.

And I hope I'm not offending any smokers but I really do feel good about myself when I see others going outside in the freezing weather or rain to have a smoke. Or having to run to the store because they're out of cigarettes. I'm done with that! I wouldn't even bother counting the days or months but I happen to know it was just before Christmas last year. It's not important how many days....I just know that I dont do that anymore. And I really sincerely wish this success for you also. Please keep posting! BTW, I am diabetic too!
