Found a wonderful low-cost spay/neuter program!

Since I've always been at least somewhat active in animal welfare, I don't know why it took me me so long to discover the Eastern PA Animal Alliance, a non-profit organization that spays and neuters dogs and cats at a huge discount.

They have a spaymobile, so they operate at different locations. We have been feeding a small, pretty stray cat that we suspect is pregnant. Because I don't want to delay any longer than necessary, I'm making a 60-mile drive on Monday to have her spayed. I'm unfamiliar with that area, and will have to spend some time hanging around, but at least we'll get it done.

They charge only $35 to spay a female stray. This includes rabies and distemper shots. For pets, they charge $65. My vet, whose fees are more reasonable than some in the area, charges $120 for the spaying, and up to $170 if the cat is pregnant. Shots are extra.

I wish I had known about the program years ago.

Thank goodness there are places like that and thank goodness there are people like you.....

Here in western Pa., Pgh., area, we have a place on the North Side that takes care of feral cats...Once a month, area vets will volunteer to spay/neuter, also gives shots to any feral...It's always on a Sunday, you must have the cat in a cage, no pet carriers, and it's all on donations...The spay/neuter and then when the cat is awake and alert, you bring them back and keep them in the cage over night and release them the next morning....We have a colony that we've been taking care of and have taken some of the ferals to be altered....Right now, one of the females that was spayed at least 7 years ago, is "resting" on our back porch....I've also noticed a new fully intact male that's been hanging around and hopefully we'll be able to get him neutered....
Give that little beauty a gentle pat from me and give yourself an extra big pat on the back.......

We have an Animal Alliance that does low cost spays and neuters too. Sometimes they have an extra special discount for seniors....then it is only $5. Sometimes they do ferals for free.

SunnyDJ, that is so kind of you to take care of the ferals. You too, Susan, for getting that one at your place, spayed.

The only shots we give ours are those required by law. We do the 3 yr rabies for our dog. Rabies and distemper for our cat. I use herbs with my pets too and they're pretty healthy. The vet once told us our beagle didn't need all that 'stuff' as he put it, but at 15 she still thinks she's a pup. She does move slower in the mornings and during rainy or cold weather but at her age it's understandable. Outside she still loves to run/race and does so with her whole heart. She was diagnosed with arthritis about 4 or 5 years ago in her back hips but as long as we keep her on her glucosamine/chondroitin joint formula, alfalfa and vit C she seems to be handling it well. She also gets some babyfood veggies (she loves sw potato and green beans) and oatmeal added to her food, slippery elm and AC vinegar at various times and loves cruising the outdoor 'yard' salad bar. She use to pick strawberries with her teeth, very nimbly and she never hurt the plants...(LOL). I avoid vets about the same as I do people docs, but if they need one I don't hesitate to take them. I've known a few people that do their own shots but never had the nerve to try it.

This particular kitten was the product of a stray momma who had been adopted (he was born at their home), but had some problems with URI, UTI, etc. as a very young kitten. All problems had been cleared up for a couple of weeks, and don't explain the anemia, neutropenia, or liver abnormalities, although a serious UTI could have trashed his kidneys at least temporarily. So I put him on metronidazole and clavamox to cover the most common bacterial infections of the liver and kidneys, and to protect him from septicemia due to his low white blood cell count. The anemia wasn't too bad and probably won't require specific treatment. He's doing great at home, and hopefully everything will be back to normal after 2 weeks of treatment, but if not the owners are wiling to pursue diagnostics and treatment for him.

Tell them: go to my neighbor's house, during spring, when she is fostering dumped 4 day old kittens. Sit with her while she hand feeds them every four hours round the clock. Help her manually express their 'pee/poop' since that's something the momma cat normally does. Then you won't think 'how great it is for my cat to know the joys of motherhood'. Go to the local no-kill shelter and volunteer for a day. Then skip spaying and neutering. There is no reason and no excuse. Your cat is no more special or cute than any of the thousands of cats of all ages, sitting in shelters. My daughter is only 9 and she gets it. Two litters in two days of 5 day old dumped kittens dumped at a vet in a very affluent part of town. These are not feral, they obviously come from domestic cats. I have posted this before. My vet tells the story of calls she gets. Cat Owner: "I need to get my cat spayed." Vet: "Has she recently given birth?" Cat Owner: "yes, this week." Vet: "we cant spay until the kittens are weaned." Cat Owner: dumps kittens, and then shows up with cat to be spayed.

Her Maine Coon relative must be a distant one, as she's very small. It could be because she's young, but I have the feeling she's just naturally tiny. Itty bitty feet....
