A frightening incident

One of the feral cats from the woods behind us has kittens, she brought them to our back porch to get water and she is trying to wean them from nursing and get them to eat the food we put out. They are little tiny things there are 4 of them.

Yesterday my husband had just come home from work, still had his suit on, I was on the phone with my sister in Louisiana, and we hear a commotion in the back yard, dogs barking, cats screaming it was horrible and my little dog was going crazy.

My husband goes running, sees two large dogs in our yard that are after the babies! He manages to open the glass slider but goes right through the screen door, knocked it right off the track!. He picks up a piece of wood and screams at the dog and chunks the wood in their direction as he runs that way. One of the dogs has a kitten. The other 3 are trying to hide.

The dogs realize my husband is in the middle of their attack and begin to circle my husband!

I had managed to close the slider so my dog did not get out. When I saw them now going after my husband I open the door start screaming too and I threw something I have no idea what! But it distracted the dogs and they realized now they have 2 people to deal with so they take off.

One was a creamy yellow colored Lab the other was a reddish longer hair looked like a Golden or Irish type dog.

We were both about to have a freaking heart attack! We started looking for the babies, 2 of them had crammed themselves into a metal charcoal starter that was on the concrete next to the bbq pit. One had made a dash under the lawn tractor and the other one which the dogs had we had no idea.

Mother cat and one of the others came running to see what was happening, so they started hissing at my husband thinking he was after the babies.

We watched and after quite a while all 4 of the babies came out of hiding and to mother.

My husband and I had to sit down and get our heart rate back to normal before we could go out to our dinner.

We have no idea who the dogs belong to have never seen them but they did have collars. I called my neighbors to be on the look out because most of them have cats and small dogs.

I will post a picture of the one kitten I have managed to snap. 2 have all 4 white feet 2 don't.

They love playing with my little dog through the big windows in the sunroom. But if they see us they are gone!

This may well explain why all of the cats have been disappearing recently. And some of them have some wounds like they had a bad fight.

My dog ate a cellophane wrapper from a packaged round steak. I did not know she ate it until she threw it up. Boy was I surprised. I was very careful about what I put in the trash after that. She also ate a suction cup off of one the darts my son's played with. She did not pass that with out help. I had to take her in for the reg worm check when the vet discovered it. She would never have passed it by herself because it had swelled up with all the moisture. I was very young and was not aware that you had to watch over a pet the same as a toddler.

Something like this confrontation happened to me in Penney's. I think there are nut cases everywhere and you just have to know when to keep quiet (which is most of the time). Penney's had their nice $14.99 t-shirts on sale for $5.99 and I picked up four of them and was waiting to be checked out. I wasn't looking at anything, but just standing there thinking if those were the colors I wanted. A young man was going to ring my items up and I was waiting. A girl was on the other side working and she looked over and said, "You should have gotten one of the girls from the floor to do that." She was talking to a young man over to my right that I hadn't even paid any attention to. I glanced over when she talked to him....just a glance and I was back to thinking about the t-shirts...never thought a thing about it. He said, loudly, "You looked." (in a very nasty way) I just glance over to see who she was talking to and looked back. I didn't say anything because I couldn't imagine that he was talking to me. What he was doing was dressing a female mannequin...I hadn't even looked to see what he was doing. I didn't say anything and he slammed the mannequin on the counter and said, "DO YOU LIKE IT?" Again, I said nothing and he again slammed it down and said even louder, "DO YOU LIKE IT?" I shrugged and said, "It's all right, I guess." The kid who was going to ring my purchases up just kept his head down and wouldn't look at this other guy...hmmmmm, I wonder how long he will have that job. I have a feeling if I had said anything more he would have done even more than he did....there are weirdos everywhere and there seem to be more any more than there used to be.

He doesn't seem to have much use for dogs. Maybe he never met one who is as fine a fellow as mine. But then again, he seems to love books. Maybe he has that redeeming quality.

Those kittens are soooo cute. I can just imagine how frightened you and your hubby were, not to mention the fright those poor kittens had. I'm glad all 4 are safe. Could you fence your yard in?

The yard is fenced in! these dogs were big enough to jump the fence easily. We had the side gate open and that is likely how they got in, it is not easy to see our side gate however. We usually leave it open so we can get the trash cans in and out and we don't have a big dog anymore and my tiny dog does not go out unless she is on a leash.

You both sure thought quickly to be able to save those kittens., but if you have packs of dogs wandering around, collars or not, I'd call the Sheriff.
I'd be worried that they will be back.
What if less able people than you and your husband had wandering into their backyard to find these dogs?

Loose dogs are a big problem. We had a run-in with a couple of large ones yesterday too. We have 4 small dogs which we walk 3 times a day, always on a leash. Yesterday we met two large shepard/husky type dogs which came running over to us. And they didn't just sniff noses with our dogs. Instead they started fighting with them. Thank heaven, when I yelled at them, they stopped and ran off. I can't help thinking how easily a big dog like that could kill one of our little ones. My husband said he met them once on an early morning walk (he walks the dogs alone before going to start work at 5 a.m.) and they scared him half to death at first! He thought they were wolves at first glance! I know, we should have reported them, but a loose dog around here now and then isn't that unusual and not much (if anything) appears to be done about them.

We do report them(neighbor across the street is Sheriff dept. both of them) and there have been a few other instances of big dogs running loose. We had some large black ones that would jump the fences from one yard to the other. One of the elderly ladies was faced with one at her mail box, luckily her neighbor across the street saw it and ran out with a golf club.
They do come out and check for them but I don't know that they have ever caught any.

These 2 however I think were someones dogs that had got out of their yard, all of us around here are watching yards to see if we can spot them.

I shudder to think what we would have found if we had not still been home to stop it.
There was one other litter of tiny baby kittens some time back and all 3 of those disappeared one night.

Thanks for your brave actions. Dear little things.

I ran into a big brown lab on my walk last week.when I had my Dachshund on a leash. This dog began slinking towards us with her fur raised along her spine. I was freaking, my dog was freaking and this dog kept advancing. A woman was screaming, said it wasn't her dog but she was trying to get her attention. The dog came within a foot of us before she managed to grab her collar. I started to carry a big stick now when I walk thru the woods. Loose dogs can be deadly.

Thank God the kittens all survived.

Oh how scary for you, but so glad you were home to protect them..I've always had a soft spot for kittens. :)
