I posted this on the Insects Forum, but maybe........

.....one of you can identify this insect for me.

Based on this his rather awkward, lumbering movements, I'm guessing he's a nymph of some sort. Or maybe I'm completely off base. One thing the photos don't show is what attracted me to him in the first place: his total metallic iridescence. He looks like he's made of gold and silver. And his legs look like they've been dipped in gold dust.

He was slightly over an inch long.

I think it's a great idea! I may have only been on this site for a mere 5 days or soi, but I've browsed around enough to know the ins-and-outs of gardenweb and find it difficult to go from one exchage forum to the next simply tp see whats up for grabs, imasgine if I truly wanted something and posted.I know that I've been searching for some nice ghost wood or other nice woods from places other than black jung;e and would like some really really nice, terratium appropriate broad-leaved lpants and orchids for the one I'm making now, but when I went in serch I realized that the majority are extremely large and too waterintolerant or the like. Not to mention most ferns in the fern exchage are staghorns. If I wanted one of those, I'd get it from my backyard, but I'm not in need of one.hell if there was an exchange here I think it may even be as easy as saying " I need large plants for my WTFs(white's tree frogs) and possibly get a few good offers. I think this idea is a great one.... two thumbs up.. I'll give my go ahead in the other forum as well! -Andrew

LOL! This is too funny! I like Ceph's suggestion that maybe he doesn't like your coffee, either, and you both are trying to be "polite" and not hurt the other's feelings. LMAO! Just the idea would be a great idea for a one-act play or something. I can see it now! Makes me glad neither DH or I like coffee. We have a small coffee maker for when family comes over. My family was over this weekend and I just laughed at all the coffee they wasted and all the complaints about the strength! I think you should just be honest with him about it. What's the worse that can happen? You end up setting it up the night before? You were gonna do that anyway. If you two can't agree, an extra coffee maker, like Ima said, is a great idea and I think our little 4-cup one was $20.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I love all of your gardens, they have inspired me, and made me believe I could do this, they are just wonderful. That was my first shade bed, down in my Gully, I have several more beds now, but the first one that had any plants of decent size. hopefully this year I will have better pics. The White Rock, is manmade, I made it using old blocks, pieces of concrete I needed to get rid of anyway, so I wanted a rock, my husband is sick & cannot help me, so I looked online, got some ideals, and I built it, it looks better in person than in pics for some reason, you really can not tell I made it, I made one more to help hold a bank, I will find that pic, this is all a work in progress, and has taken a lot longer than I ever imagined. Since I made the rock, I found huge rock over in another gully so I have just been moving them around with my husband's truck and a crow bar, but I have dug enough rock up off this hill to rock my dry stream that is used when we get lots of rain. The great thing I have found about working down in the gully is the shade is there all day. lol

If I were more paranoid and conspiracy theory receptive, I'd be wondering why we are out of nowhere talking about kugels. Just this afternoon, DH said he'd like to have a kugel, and maybe make one. While I don't DISlike them, I never cared much for them. I remember my mother made one, and it was ok but I know everyone else loved them. I'm going to look up in one of the cookbooks put together by a group because I'm pretty sure it will have kugel recipes. If I come across one of interest, I will be sure to share it. The one in the link looks pretty good but yes, quite rich.

Camp, that's one UGLY insect! But I think you're probably right about my pic being a cicada, too. That was my first thought, although I haven't had much cicada experience (fortunately).

Anne, I know our local katydids rather intimately, and it's not one of them. :-)

I don't know what it is, but it's not anything I'd want to be close to...looks like it could eat an entire plant in a matter of minutes. Shoo!!

I think it's a stink bug- a brown marmorated stink bug. Don't squash it inside.

On second thought - it might just be a stink bug- I don't see the alternating black and white marks on the shield.

Nope. Sorry, Mcmann, but I know what that one looks like, too. I've been observing insects on this property for many years, but I've never seen anything quite as . . . decorated as this one.

Coincidentally, I encountered another mysterious one yesterday. But I didn't get his picture. He was light brown all over, very elongated, with a small back head and "serrated" legs. Rather large--about an inch-and-a-half long. I captured him and put him outside, where he startled me by flying! For some reason I didn't think he was a flying insect, although now that I think of it, his wings (folded on his back) were pretty obvious.

It's one of the Buprestid beetles (adult); they're tree borers.

He certainly looks like he could bore into a tree. Did they say which tree it prefers? Between the gypsy moths and the wooly adelgid I don't think I want another tree-a-vore!

It's a beetle but I don't have my bug book at home so I can't figure out what kind... It's pretty.
