Why can't people.........

make more than one sentence without inserting the word "like" after ever 5th word! I was just watching a guest on the Ellen show and I actually was so annoyed by his use of the word that I muted it. Why can't people talk now days without using expletives every few words? I know "like" is a word like teenagers and the younger set like uses all the time,but like why do adults who are like supposed to be educated use it like every other word! LOL Can you imagine in the not so distant future the President giving a speech and using that word like all the time? It's not so far fetched to think that could happen unless we start teaching our kids to speak correctly.

Does this bother anyone else or is it just me? LOL

Oh my gosh - this is, like, so annoying to me too!!! Actually, my grown son is a big offender and I'm constantly correcting him. But no, it's not just you.

People are talking faster than they can think bcs they're afraid of losing people's attention.

So they use "fillers" such as "like" and "ummm" and "y'know."
In the '60s they used "man."

Everyone understands that plumbing vents allow the stinky, obnoxious, & toxic sewer gasses to safely dissipate into the atmosphere however that is just the small part of what vents do. As liquids pass through the drain and waste pipes it displaces the air, which is present in the line by pushing the air ahead as it moves. If a drain line is sized correctly a horizontal pipe should only be full under full load. This keeps the upper half of the line open for the transfer of vent air over the liquid and into the space behind the moving liquid. In this manner the air pressure in the line will remain constant, however, there are conditions where the upper half of the line may also be obstructed by the moving liquid. Under these conditions as the liquid moves forward it leaves a partial vacuum behind the liquid which would then suck the water out of the fixture trap, thereby leaving the trap open for sewer gasses to enter you house once the liquid has moved on to the sewer. In order to prevent that partial vacuum situation the Plumbing Codes are very specific about where and how vents are to be placed. In fact, ask any plumbing inspector and he or she will tell you that venting is the most important part of the plumbing system, and the part which gets the greatest scrutiny during a plumbing inspection. Now to answer your question, the terms "Pro-vent, Studor Vent or Cheater Vent" are trade names for a device, which is properly called an "Air Admittance Valve or AAV). An air admittance valve is a device, which has an internal spring-loaded diaphragm that will open under negative pressure and allow additional vent air to enter the pipe. The singular drawback of the AAV is that they will allow additional air into the pipe to protect the water level in the trap seal, but they do not allow the sewer gasses in the pipe to safely escape to the atmosphere. For this reason the use of AAVÂs should be limited. Under the International Residential Code (IRC) all structures are required to have one "Main Vent" which must run undiminished in size from the building main drain through the roof. After that is achieved you may terminate additional auxiliary vents in the attic space, through the wall under very limited circumstances or you may use an unlimited number of AAVÂs Under the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) ALL VENTS must terminate through the roof, however the UPC will allow a maximum of one AAV per structure. Based upon information presented in the original post this homeowner is under the UPC, and while it is legal to use the AAV or in their case "Pro-Vent" it is understood that this is the only one that may be used in the structure. ------Caroline emailed me direct and asked if I would accept the "Pro Vent" I thought the question was important enough that i would like to share my response to all..... I am sure that many people who read my reply are left wondering how did I conclude that you are under the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) rather than the International Residential Code (IRC). The answer is that this is an island and it appears that your plumber originally intended to vent the island by means of an "Island Loop Vent" which is the preferred method of venting island fixtures. Under the IRC to create an island loop vent we attach two parallel vertical risers on the upstream end of the drain line at the island sink. The sink drain is attached to one of the risers and both risers are interconnected at the top forming a loop from the drain below. (There is no vent line under the floor) Under the UPC we also install two vertical risers as described above with the sink drain attached to one of the risers. On the top of each riser we then install a 1/8th bend (45deg sanitary elbow)and angle both pipes up at 45degress until they meet at the top where they are connected by means of a 1/4bend (90deg sanitary elbow). The UPC then requires that we install a vent on the riser opposite the sink connection and this vent line runs horizontal under the floor and back to a regular vent riser, which goes up and through the roof. This is the only situation in which the code will allow a horizontal vent below the flood level rim of the fixture served by that vent. The IRC allows an unlimited number of AAVÂs therefore most plumbers simply use an AAV to vent an island rather that go to the expense and bother of making a proper loop vent. The UPC only allows a maximum of one AAV per structure with the expressed consent of the local inspector therefore under the UPC it is common practice to install a proper island loop vent rather than the AAV. As I am sure you will agree, everyone makes the occasional mistake and in this situation the mistake was forgetting to run the water line. The true measure of a tradesman is how well they can correct the mistake without causing additional problems on the job and when I read your plumbers solution to the problem of the missing water line I personally thought it was a rather ingenious. He, or she as the case may be, has opted to use the AAV to vent the island, which is fully code approved. Having done that, he or she is now free to use the horizontal vent line under the concrete as a conduit to pull in the missing water line thereby precluding the necessity to cut the concrete. Under the circumstances I would give your plumber two thumbs up for a great recovery. But then what do i know,,I am only a Master Plumber

Carolyn, I understand your reticence to make known the online shop you're having difficulty with; after all, it may just be an isolated incident. However, I think I am in agreement with the majority here when I say that we could all benefit from your experience and can make effective decisions for the future by knowing which shop is having the difficulties. I agree with contacting your credit card company. And I would suggest one last call to the vendor. Explain to them that you have called "x" times and are not happy with the explanations you have been given as to the status of your order. If the person who answers the phone doesn't give you satisfaction, take a deep breath and ask to speak to a supervisor. Always be pleasant, but go up as high as you must to get this issue resolved. If someone is willing to get you the assistance you need, make sure to compliment and thank them profusely and even send a note and name that person directly. Don't be afraid to ask along the way, "what can you do to keep me as a customer? Can you throw in something extra to compensate me for the difficulties and problems I have had with you? I'd like to reamain a customer, but I need some assurance that this kind of mistake won't happen again." As I always say to my children, if you don't ask, you certainly won't get. HTH, Odessa

After wearing a modified mullet (short on top, down to my behind in back) for a lot of years, my daughter convinced me to get a new style. I loved what the designer did, but the $60 price tag is more than I can justify every six weeks. So I armed myself with a photo of my new cut and six weeks later took it to a less expensive salon. In addition to showing her the photo I took care to explain it as well. She assured me she understood exactly what I was talking about, then proceeded to give me an entirely different style. Tears? You bet! But still, I went back to her again and again, telling her each time how to make it more closely resemble my previous style, and eventually it was very close. I thought we had come to an understanding and then the next time she cut my hair it was a whack job again! I've had the flowbee for many years and used it to cut my husband's and grandchildren's hair, so I began to use it on myself, too. It did alright, but not the style I wanted. It has been more than 2 months since my last haircut and I just didn't know which way to go. In a moment of desperation I drove down to the little shop that my 81 year old mother goes to. I asked for the owner (she cuts Mom's hair and is in her late 60's). I had printed out my photo to show her, but in my haste, had forgotten to bring it with me. I proceeded to explain my style and she said she knew exactly what I meant. I knew I was going to drive home in tears, but I just couldn't get up and leave. And guess what? When she was done I WAS nearly in tears! I couldn't believe my eyes. It was exactly the style I verbalized to her. Bless you, little old Lina!

A long-time friend is having financial issues many years after her divorce, but won't admit she's the cause of 75% of her misery. She got a decent alimony for a few years and frittered the excess away instead of setting some aside for leaner times. (I know for a fact she could have put away $1,000 a month minimum for 5+ years.) Same with food assistance she received. Fed her kids & their friends meals often (instead of stocking up the pantry for her family and just providing simple appetizers to her kids and the children who came to play). To the tune of $200 extra dollars in groceries every month! While on FOOD STAMPS! She works part-time, takes free college classes, has subsidized rent on a decent apartment and believes she is destitute. She believes her parents and brother have it good and should help her. I'm seeing now that she plans things with me in a half-as*ed manner, changes plans often, is forgetful and self-focused enough that I don't have a good time with her anymore. She recently asked me if we could go out to get an inexpensive $10 lunch and visit--and only told me she was broke half an hour before we were to meet...So we didn't go out. I have a very tight budget, too, but I plan a meager $10 for "fun". I'm not sure she's ever truly grateful, just playing the "poor me" card to gain sympathy to avoid taking full responsibility. I used to see the instability in her character as her emotionally recovering from the divorce, but it's been going on way too long. I hadn't seen her in awhile, and I realized recently why I hadn't made much effort in contacting her. My life was peaceful and I didn't want the hassle. After a dozen years of once-treasured friendship, I'm wondering if she has a bit of a personality disorder and seriously considering dropping her.

OMG! One of my Pet Peeves when I was Store Manager. Every young person that I hired had to "like" say that! I always corrected them.

I had a Great Aunt who said "y'know" every other word. Drove my Kids crazy. One time they counted the "y'knows" and it was about 50 times in ten minutes. LOL! Once her Nephew said "No Vilma, I don't know".

Yes, it bothers me, and I have to do the same thing...turn the sound off! I do believe that the schools are trying harder to encourage correct language. I noticed just recently that part of the HS graduation requirements is to be able to give an oral presentation. Our 10th grade grandson lived with us this past semester and that was one of the things he had to do. He also "dressed up" in shirt, tie, with his better blue jeans of course, to give his. (He did get an A...we were quite proud as that was one of the reasons he was living with us.) I am not quite sure if the teacher encourged the more formal attire for the day, but I think that it is important that kids learn that what you wear is important as well.

There are many words, or phrases, that are being used now that make me cringe when I hear the way they are used.

Even the slightest experience that some one is describing is said to be surreal.

There is nothing that happens now that is less than amazing.

That said or having said that, don't get me started!

I guess I'm used to it; I'm around so many teenagers. What drives me crazy is 2 of my friends that add "and everything" to the end of most sentences. I know they're hardly aware they're doing it. We probably all do something like that w/o realizing it.

Nanny-Ohhhh,don't get me started on the way people dress!LOL I get onto my 18 year old DGS all the time for his "butt crack" pants.LOL He's not into the baggy stuff other than the pants and the reason he has for those is that pants that fit around his waist feel like they are "choking" him.He has always been that way though so I guess it is a legitimate excuse.LOL I have threatened to buy him suspenders.
At a local high school graduation ceremony the other day I noticed 3 out of 4 of the boys were wearing shorts (at least I hope they had shorts on under that gown!LOL) and either sandals or sneakers with no socks! Those hairy calves were not pretty!LOL Most of the girls had on flip flop type shoes,which is fine because that is the style now but they weren't even dressy ones.My kids would have never dressed like that because I would not have let them and for sure not for a graduation ceremony!Just because something was the "style" didn't mean they got to wear it!LOL As far as I know none of them suffer any psychological problems from it.LOL

I like hate that too, you know what I'm saying?

My supervisor says, "You know what I'm saying?" and "You know what I mean?" constantly. Drives me bonkers. YES, I know what you mean and if I don't, I'll ask. I'm not like stupid. I don't like think she like even knows she like does that.

I'm 40 and can remember my dad giving my best friend and I such a hard time about that when we were kids. I still do it but I am MUCH better about it now. I remember going through the 'so' faze. "I so know what you are talking about'. I am on my kids about using like and umm now. They say 'dude' all the time. "Dude, no way!" or "Dude your all like..." I don't notice them using umm very much.

I used to work with a guy that could NOT start a sentence without saying 'ummm whatchamacallit" made DH and absolutely NUTS. We all worked together at the time.

It really makes me crazy when you see someone on TV that is supposed to be an authority on something and they say like and umm constantly. It makes them sound and look so immature and unintelligent. It's really sad that they have been allowed to go through college and out into the world without having been taught to speak properly.

That is annoying to me as well. Something else that bugs the bejeebers out of me is spelling. When people have computers with word check, what seems to be the excuse?? I am not saying I am an expert speller, but words that are not spelled right, just seem to jump out at me! And I have to wonder knowing full well these people are college educated how they ever made it through!!

It drives me crazy also...And, when someone is being interviewed, mostly sports figures, and they keep saying, you know every other sentence, just gets me going...I also can't understand, when someone is describing doing something and they say, "so fun" instead of so much fun....
AND THE CLOTHES, that's another story.....Hopefully the next fad will be milder or at least have the body covered.....

I've noticed what Danihoney said about people on TV. I watch the cable news networks and it bugs me when people say "uh" constantly. Or even worse "uh, uh, uh". Even the anchors do it. I wonder if these folks ever watch themselves on TV and notice what they are doing.

Spelling errors kinda grind at my nerves for some reason. Sometimes it's surprising who's making the error, too, as you'd think they would know. Using "there" for "their" is one that really irritates me for some reason. As far as word usage habits I'll add "whatever" - that's such a put-down when it's directed at you! I say it too, sometimes, but to have it said to you really seems like a little slap in the face almost - your words, thoughts, opinions, are not important enough to debate further.

My DGD went through the "like" "ya know" "so_____" "awesome" phase a few years ago. DH has a friend who can take ten minutes to tell a two-minute story because he inserts s*** and d*** every other word! His grown son is even worse, with effing this and effing that. I am too old to be shocked, but I can be offended. I take myself to another part of the house!

What really gets my goat is hearing professional speakers, including newspersons and commercial spokespersons, mispronounce jewelry (joolery), nuclear (nookular) and February (Febyewary) to name just a few. When I hear things like that from a person who supposedly knows better I lose track of whatever else they're saying. Like totally!

It bugs me when my nieces (in college) do it, but I consider it a minor annoyance and one they will outgrow. I'd rather they talk funny than do drugs.

It bothers me also, when Like , you know, you know what I'm saying, is inserted between every other word in a sentence. My pet peeve is when the word ASK is pronounced AKS. I want to say to someone who says "I aks him", "Oh, that had to hurt! was it a single edge or double edge?". When they ASK me what I mean, I will say, " you said you axed him, I wondered if it was a single edge ax or double edge ax." LOL Dottie

My pet peeve is when someone has to preface the middle of every sentence with "having said that", or "that being said" -
just irritates the heck out of me....
next time I hear that perhaps I will aks them to stop it...rofl.

It amazes me that people treat the F word as a normal part of speech. A girl at work here does that & no one seems bothered or amazed that it's being used in a so-called business office. That word used to be taboo, but now it's a common part of speech, even in the workplace. Sad.

I have to admit, I catch myself saying "like" a lot.
I don't know why I do it, it's a bad habit. Sorry!!! LOL!!!

Judy-I agree.In my day that was a forbidden word and it never came out of my mouth!LOL Now it seems to be just every day language like darn or shoot or heck.You can tell which generation I'm from!LOL I hate,hate,hate that word!
I do say,"ya know" quite a bit but am trying to break myself of the habit.LOL

When my oldest DD was in high school I was driving her and her best friend someplace. They were just talking a mile a minute with every third word being 'like'.

I started talking to them in long rambling sentences ~

You know like when every other like word is like it's like so like annoying, like you know what I mean. It's like really like hard to like keep like your like attention on like what you're like talking about, you know what I mean?

I just kept rambling on and they were giggling and said they would "try" to stop saying it so much but it was such a habit it would be hard. LOL

The use of the F word is horrible and it is so common now that it seems like it is everywhere, especially in movies.
Once when I had a young teen boy walking with two girls behind me at a mall the boy kept saying the F word. The girls were telling him to stop saying it ~ I think because they were so close behind me.

I turned around and asked the boy, "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" The girls said, see, I told you. The boy got embarrassed and upset saying, "Don't talk about my mother". I replied, "Well, she must not have done a very good job raising you with that filthy mouth". He said he didn't talk like that around her but I told him that people would think she was not a good mother. He was really embarrassed.

Another word that irrates me is eXpecially. There is NO X in that word! Especially

I do similar things like that quite often. I tell them they are in public, and that there are a lot of people who don't want to hear language like that. I usually finish up by asking, "What's wrong with you? Don't you have any respect for others?"

They usually just slink away....thankfully.

I also 'confront' litterers. I imagine I will meet my maker in a parking lot or some public place...but we all gotta go sometime. Here recently I have taken to confronting people who push their carts up into the handicap spots instead of putting them anywhere else but there, or in the cart corral. They look at me like I'm nuts or something. I just shake my head in disgust of their laziness and lack of respect of others.

You all got me started now.

I have a friend that keeps putting in "to make a long story short".
Just for fun, I like to insert, "Now just to make a short story long".....

Ohohohoh, I like have one, ya know. I absolutely HATE it when adults address students in a classroom or teaching setting and use "OK?" "Get out your math books, ok?" NO it's NOT ok to ask (aks) their permission. I see it a lot in normal coversation. Our dog obedience instructor does it all the time and someday I'm going to say NO!!

The use of "like", "like, you know" and "you know what I'm saying" really do drive me bananas, but it's more the use of the "f" word that irriates me so much. So many people use this word without even thinking about it - I'm sure they don't even know they are doing it and I absolutely cringe every time I hear it. Another peeve I have is with the spelling of the shortened version of "you are" - so many people are spelling it as "your" instead of "you're" - it drives me nuts, but I'll get over it!!! lol

Pawsitive, I was watching those police shows and they say "Okay?" all the time! I'm going to put you under arrest, okay? Put your hands behind you, okay? Get in the car, okay? (Are they asking permission?)

I also notice people not pronouncing simple words right.Our Pastors wife says "mushroons"(with an n)and my dil says "pitcher" instead of picture.My hubby pronounced onion as "ungyun"...drives me batty! lol!

Hi - "Went missing" gets me, too. Where has that come from and why is is so common now?

But - last night I was in a fitting room trying on clothes and a woman was talking on her cell phone. She was saying "Her and I went ...". That, and variations of it, is so common and just plain poor grammar. For goodness sakes. It's "SHE and I". One wouldn't say "Her went shopping". One would say "SHE went shopping". So, of course, it's "She and I went shopping".

Even worse is "Me and her ...". Arghhh.

"The dumbing down of America", as is often heard.

Just wanted to mention something funny that happened last night.DGD had two of her little friends over.They were in here talking to me and every few words would be "like".One is really bad about it.I was joking with them that they were really annoying and were using that word way too much.I asked them if they could even talk without using it and the one that is so bad about it said she could talk without using it.It was so funny.She couldn't say 3 words without stopping and thinking for a few seconds!LOL I told them they need to make a conscious effort to eliminate that word from their vocabulary because it really sounds stupid.LOL
Suezie-"Went missing" bugs me too.That and "Ramp it up or ramping it up".Never heard either one until just recently.Something else our news people do that really irritates me is using "cops" for law enforcement or officers,"the slammer" for jail,"bucks" or "big Bucks" for money or dollars.We have a weather man that uses the phrase,"As we head into the weekend or into tomorrow or into the overnight hours," and it's used the same way as "like".After every sentence.Every time he says it I will say,"Head em up and move em out!" That's what I think of.LOL
I just don't know,you know,why people can't be as,like articulate as I am!LOL LOL
