Chest pains ?

I should probably go to the health forum but it is not very active. I had some chest pains this morning and it went up both sides of my neck, but I didn't sweat or pass out or anything. Does that sound like heart or indigestion?

Women's heart attack symptoms are not as clear cut as men's. Beacuse of this, many women who are experiencing heart problems don't seek the help they need. I would have thought indigestion wouldn't be affecting the _sides_ of your neck. In your shoes I'd be off to the doctor, especially if the feeling persists.

Yes, thanks too. I picked up my Health magazine and they had an article about this in it that I read last night. It still says it's difficult for a woman to understand that they're having a heart attack, that they pass it off as something else. It also mentions jaw pain. I'm glad your friend is doing well, Westelle, that was nice of her to share this. I agree Pat, if your dr is ignoring you, maybe you should ignore him and find someone who will listen to you. Your age is NOT an excuse when women are living into their 90's and older. You have an excellent quality of life and you want to keep that. You need a dr willing to give you the quality care to keep that.

Melva - ROFL - how long would you suggest in the PC? ccaggiano - sometimes muscle pain can be delayed. I tend to get muscle pain about 2-3 days after shoveling, raking or heavy lifting. It's most likely because the doc knew you weren't making up a complaint just to get drugs and it would save time in case one didn't work and then you wouldn't have to come back just for a different script. That being said, if you ever have a concern, you should contact the ER dept head or the hospital adminstrator and talk to them. The only Class II drug there is the oxycontin, which is oxycodone hcl. Vicodin is Hydrocodone Bitartrate & Acetaminophen. Percocet is Oxycodone and Acetaminophen. Vicodin would be the mildest, then Percocet (depending on the dosage) and then the oxycontin. How old are you? Male or female? Are there any risk factors for heart disease? Such as smoking, High BP or cholesterol, or family history of heart disease? Does the pain stay in your chest or does it radiate to anywhere else, such as your back, neck, or arm? Any nausea? Shortness of breath? Do you break out in a sweat when you have pain? Have you noticed anything that causes the pain to start, such as eating or activity? All of these questions are important to ask when trying to determine the cause of chest pain. Pulled muscles, or chostochondritis (which is a inflamation of tissue between the ribs) can cause this kind of pain, but usually resolve over 6-8 weeks. So can pleusery. And while cardiac stress tests are a great tool, there are many cases of false negatives, meaning that they don't always indicate a problem where there is one. Thank you for all the advice. My hand is better this a.m. for not being used all night. Still not good, but headed in the right direction. So I'm trying not to use it as much as possible today and hope improvement continues. I do have epsom salts. Almost threw out the container the other day. See? This is why I hate to throw out things. :-) Rhizo, the reaction you describe sounds like the tachycardia I get from naproxyn (Aleve). I won't go near it. The last time I took ibuprofen I had a scary pain that shot from the left side of my neck down to the center of my chest. Just one pain, but it made an impression on me! When I'd taken it before I noticed some twinges in my chest, but nothing like that.

Call 911, do not drive yourself to the hospital.

If may be nothing or it may be something - the only way to know for sure is to GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW.

Believe me - you are not wasting anyone's time by going to the hospital - even it it may be heartburn, they would rather you went and have it turn out to be nothing than have someone find you dead on the floor because you didn't take this seriously.

I had a heart attack 4-1/2 yrs. ago & had no clue that's what it was. I had had a tiny pain in the middle of my chest all day, just like someone poking their finger at you, not bad pain, but annoying. Worked all day & went home & did laundry, still didn't know & had no symptoms. Finally, about 11:00 that night, I started getting clammy & nauseous & told DH I thought I was having a heart attack because I had read of these symptoms somewhere (thank God). Even he didn't believe me at first but drove me to the nearest hospital, 10 min. away. Turns out it was a mild heart attack & I had one stent put in because of an artery being 90% blocked. Women's symptoms are very different than men's. Please go & have it checked out. It may be nothing, but at least you'll know.

It's probably not a heart attack but what if it is? At the very least, call the hospital.

NannyP, I am bumping this up hoping you will let us know how you are.

My husband had a heart attack 3 years ago with very vague symptoms. Anyone who even suspects it might be the heart should call 9-1-1. Better to be safe!
