In a thread this is what I read from you...

I guess about right now-the only one roaming around in my brain is.."You'll Never Walk Alone" as I'm trying to fortify myself for the near future. My DH was diagnosed with lung cancer this afternoon.

I am so sorry. Please know you will not walk alone, ever! I hope you know that. Hugs, prayers and special thoughts going out to you and your husband. Stay strong.

Hello, Old Friends! My goodness, I can't believe how tardy this is. I found this thread some time ago and have been meaning to come back and comment. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! The emails in the hospital were a real pick-me-up. I think I still have them somewhere -- I must find and re-read them some time. Mistress Mary did indeed bring me a water hyacinth in the hospital, and was an amazing help to me during my convalescence, and not only then! She's a real peach. So anyway, yeah, it was an ordeal, not something I'd care to repeat, but I had excellent care and have recovered well, though it's been a long process. What actually happened was that the anticipated 2 surgical days turned into 3, because the neurosurgery part of Day 1 took much longer than anticipated. I was in hospital and rehab for a total of 6 weeks, with a few days home between the second and third operations. I didn't mean to abandon you all. At the time I was more active in a forum for people with spine issues like mine, for obvious reasons, and since then I've been absent because I'm too compulsive and when I'm active here I tend to get nothing else done. I'm currently experiencing one of ponding's worst waking nightmares (muskrats trashed my liner -- agh!), so this seemed as good a time as any to pop in and say my much-belated thank-you's. With a little luck maybe I'll learn to manage my time better and stick around! (Yes, this is really me. I couldn't remember my NorahS login, and I'd rather spell my name forward, anyway.)

When I had my hysterectomy, my husband took a picture of my 2 daughters and a picture of my 2 doxies and went out and bought special frames for each of them--he brought them to the hospital the first day I was there so I could at least look at them. I was there for a week because I started running a fever. I hope you feel better soon--I just counted up how long it has been since mine and it is almost 9 years--boy I don't even miss it--don't really think about it any more either. Hi Carolyn, sorry to hear about your husband. Maybe you should consider getting a caregiver to help at home. That's the work that I have done the past year waiting for law school to start in August. There are grants to help pay for you to get help at home. You need to take care of yourself because he'll need you to be strong for the both of you until he gets better. Remember, it's a marathon not a sprint and you should build a support group for yourself until he's well again. Prayers for patience and strength for you both! Love a lot, Laugh a lot, and time will pass a little less slowly, then one day...your doctor will tell you go home, he's fine, come back for a check up in a year! Mona Lisa

Sending prayers for you both! Sharon, I'm sure you already know, but just in case... Be very careful what cleaning products you use around your DH in his condition. The scents/strong odors from them may contribute to his breathing problem. I am sure that the odor from the animal probably brought a lot of it on for him. And definitely don't use incense to cover the smell. In two seconds flat, he won't be able to breath at all. Incense is poisonous, acording to my dr., for anyone who has any type of breathing problem. We had to call the ambulance in church one Sunday durning Lent (Catholic Church) for an elderly lady. She got up to leave so she could get fresh air, and only made it two steps to the isle before passing out. Tami

Sharon I'm so sorry. My BF's DH had a lobe removed several years ago and was doing fine until this fall when they found spots on the remaining lobe. He's been through chemo and is now in remission and they have gone to New Hampshire for the summer. Have faith and be strong. I'm extending my hand across the state to you and will keep you both in my prayers and thoughts.

Sharon ~ I wish you and your DH the best and hope that everything turns out fine. My DH was diagnosed and treated with bladder cancer in March 2007, and has been doing extremely well. I hope your DH will have the same outcome. My thoughts and prayers are with you both during this difficult time.

My deepest gratitude to all of you for your kind words, encouragement & caring.
Awaiting the VA to call now as to what day they'll be doing the needle biopsy-althought she said they're pretty certain the node is 98% malignant, as they did a PETSCAN. No surgery option as he has COPD & enphysema and his respiration is only at 28%. Once the Board reviews the biopsy-they'll decide if chemo, radiation or both.
I am usually so organized & programmed to handle any situation but I can't seem to get a handle on this-my mind is wandering all over the place.
Again-thanks Wendy and the rest of my sweet KT family..it's so reassuring to know I will have someplace and someone to ease my stress with, fill me w/encouragement, etc. when it gets to be too much.
He has always been such a procrastinator-made NO arrangements for things like this nor for me. No life Insurance-we own our manufactured home but down the road? No way will I be able to afford to pay the lot rent, utilities, etc, etc..even tho I will get around 80% of his Soc Security-which is $300 more than what mine is. I filed for disability 3 years ago-I cannot sit for more than 30 min at a time, have inoperable feet so can' walk or stand for any length of time-hard to accept any job that will provide me living costs. I SO NEEd to talk to a widow or a gal in the know-who has knowledge of any & all VA benefits for widows, etc. I just can't do this right now. I asked him a few months ago (when he was hospitalized w/bronchitis),to go with me to find out all I needed to be aware of and ready for-to no avail. Plus I can't get any of that info until he signs a release of his military info. He's a retired fighter pilot-did 2 hitches in Nam-for BOTH the Air Force AND Navy. Oh well, I have always believed that things work out...in time. Thanks again everyone!

I am so saddened to hear this news.I agree with what the others have said.Check out all the sources they have given you and also you may want to try and find out if his cancer is related to agent orange,since he was in Viet Nam.Those folks at the Viet nam wives site will probably lead you in a direction to go with that,and quite possibly the VA as well.It's worth checking into.

My DH is also a Viet Nam vet,3 tours.
In the meantime i'll lift you both up in prayers,stay strong.

I am so sorry to hear this news.
However, with the medical advances there are now- he has many options available even without the surgery.

Call the VA hotline posted above and pester whoever you need or how many you need to get the info you need.This is not a good time to be having to stress over the financial decisions so much.
I will pray for you and your DH.

Sharon, please Google VA survivor benefits and go to the VA site. My husband was killed in Vietnam and I received VA benefits, but they are also available to survivors of other military personnel. PLEASE check into this or, if you have a VA office near you, call for an appointment--he doesn't have to be with you to do that--and talk to them. See what you will need to bring in (paperwork) in order to apply.

I'm not trying to put the horse before the cart, but you need to face all the possibilities and also to take care of your own self. He gave up a good portion of his life for his country, and it may seem cold and hard to you, but as his wife, I frankly think you deserve the help.

Thank you so much you guys. I have been on the VA sites but I truly need to go see someone in person. The stalling is because he doesn't know where his DD214 is & I have to have that. Yesterday we were at the VA..I am SO lucky-it's about 6 miles from our home. He took a form in to request a copy of the DD214, so until I get that-NOBODY can give me any definite answers as all of his info is classified Priority Info.

Patti..I will check the Viet Nam sites-as well. He didn't qualify for any Agent Orange $$ as he was in a fighter plane, not on ground.

Bay Pines VA is one of the nicest VA's in the state! This is where he will have all treatments & has been seeing his Dr for the past 10 years. I'm sure they will help me get through every aspect of this.

Sharon, good to hear Bay Pines has improved. Never heard very good things about them until lately. Must have a new director. We go to the Gainesville VA and that's why I won't move back to Pinellas. We are so happy with the care DH gets there. Only gripe is they're slow as molasses and our 9:00 appointment more often than not will actually take place at 11 or after. GRRRR!

I know you can get copies of his DD214, so fill out that form for him and send it in. I'm surprised he doesn't have one, but it's no problem. I hope he lives to 100, but at some point (we outlive the men, right?), you will need it.

Doctors aren't always right, so don't give up hope. ((((Sharon & DH))))
