Storm damage..

We had a big maple tree fall on the house. Lucky for us it did very little damage. The entire tree needs to come down. Sad thing is it is our main shade for the front of the house. Had a few other things broke but nothing major. We had 70 mile an hour winds for a short time. Kinda scarey

Hate it you've lost the shade, but thankful no major damage. Trust no one was injured.

I overlooked the white line question also. That is what happens from a little bit of small hail. All my hostas look like that this year. The small hail goes through the leaf so fast that it tears the leaf but the tissue bounces back into the same configuration as before and you see the outline of the tear. The holes are where the hail took out a piece of the leaf. You can check the other hosta with the second strip. Does it show any HVX evidence? If so please take a picture of whatever leaf you check on it. It's good to have three Gold Standards showing discolorations and have them all tested. If anyone else has tested a suspicious leaf it would be great if you posted a pic of the leaf and the results. We'll all be training our eyes to recognize the disease.

Love this site! Floral, you're absolutely right - the storm made me seek out your advice. It was growing so well I didn't even realize I didn't know how to properly care for it. Rhino, This is the 1st plant I've really made an effort to deadhead and am very happy with the results. It was starting to get a bit leggy but the stems were also getting very intertwined, to the point of not looking right. When I trim it back I will also remove a few branches. Ken, Thanks for the advice and the link. I'll be more strategic about the trimming that I had originally planned. And, yes, I should be more patient with many things! I have a question about deadheading. In the youtube video, he only removes the blooms. I was under the impression I needed to remove the blooms AND the small stem leading back to the thicker branch. Am I deadheading incorrectly?

Also sorry that you've lost your shade ... and thankful that there was only minor damage.

Had you had any indication that the tree was deteriorating (if it was)?

We had the high winds too Susie, but haven't seen any trees or limbs down. Sure grateful for the 2 1/2 inches of rain we got.

I'm glad it wasn't worse Susie. We only got a little rain out of it. We were too far north of it where we are in Ohio. Even with some rain that went thru this morning, we didn't get enough to register in the rain gauge.

I am in Central Indiana. There was a lot of damage all around the area. They had nickle size hail about 20 miles from us. My hubby had just bought a new truck and he just came in from town. I told him they said we may get some hail so he went to put the truck in the barn and it came through. So far I haven't heard of any injuries. Our small town has loads of big trees down. A few large ones up rooted. Some in the area just got their power back about an hour ago. We did have another storm go through the area early this morning. I think we have received about an inch of rain. This was needed badly.

Ole joyful, the trees looked very healthy. We already have plans to plant another one..

I'm glad it wasn't worse, but that's a scary experience. I'm sure you'll miss the tree too.

A friend in Anderson said he had a lot of dead branches but his trees were ok his Mmom and Dad lost their willow

Glad you came through with only minor damage -- and no hail damage to the new truck!

Sorry about the maple. They aren't very long-lived trees, especailly not silver maples. (Not that I know what yours was!)

We had only a 'taste' of rain last night. The little creek beside our house is half its' usual breadth and an inch deep. I'm not sure the toad I rescued from our window well was terribly happy to be put back beside so little water.

Well, if there's any good news at all, it's the fact it landed on your house and the insurance company will pay for the removal. Had it not landed on the house, you'd have to pick up the cost which really hurts. It's bad enough you lost a beautiful tree and all that shade! Glad no one was hurt and there was no damage to the house.

Glad you are okay. We are in central Virginia, last night the winds were 90 mph. Very scary! We had some huge limbs down. And I had worked for three hours Friday morning in 104 degree heat, (like an idiot), cleaning up the deck and re-potting plants. Well, a huge limb fell, took out the corner of our new gutter, then fell on the deck. Absolutely covered the deck, and broke all my newly potted plants. :( Our front yard looks like a war zone, limbs everywhere. and some neighbors lost a few trees. We were fortunate that we did not lose power at our house, some counties around still don't have power. But it could have been much worse.
Calling for more severe storms tonight.
