New refrigerator--it sticks out too far!
Comments (25)I was lucky enough to be able to get my FD refrigerator recessed - of course it took the cabinet installer two attempts becuase he forgot the first time and the 2nd time didn't do it deep enough, but that's a different story. grrr.... Sorry your new Samsung isn't as sweet as you had hoped! One option - get those cool spice magnets (see link). I saw this on a friend's FD fridge and didn't even notice how much it stuck out. Talk about taking advantage of space. The magnets are much cheaper than a CD unit, that's for sure. But if you can't handle it, bite the bullet & get the CD model. Having lived in the Bay Area for 12 years, I know prospective buyers will apprecitae the look of a CD model. I had to bite the bullet with my DW this week (spending $500 more for an upgraded model) because I really really wanted a super quiet model. This kitchen stuff sure can be costly! Good luck. Comments (7)You need to look at the measurements (these days you can get the install manuals for most online) as some need some space behind them. I think generally, as everyone has been saying, only the door depth sticks out - here is mine....See MoreRefrigerator sticks out too far . . . ugly.
Comments (20)I'm sorry you're going through all of this. My KD planned for the deeper panels around my counter-depth refrigerator - 30" (even b/f I brought it up based on what I had seen here on GW!) Our contractor then cut them to fit. Unfortunately, most GCs are clueless when it comes to design details like this. I would check with your GC and ask how much it would cost to: (1) Get two finished panels (one for each side) that are at least as deep as your refrigerator carcass + 1" (to accommodate plugs, anti-tip devices, water line, etc.) I'd probably add at least 3". Keep in mind that the panels cannot be any deeper than the refrigerator carcass - the doors must stick out past the panels to be able to open them fully for access and for cleaning (removing bins/drawers, etc.). (2) Re-install the panels and cabinet...you shouldn't need a new cabinet - just pull it out so it's flush with the front of the panels...although there may be some finagling to get it mounted properly since it won't be against the back wall or ceiling (if you have crown molding instead of cabs up to the ceiling) - but it will be b/w two end panels. [I'm not a cabinet installer, so I don't know all the details of how this is done.] About the right side - do you have enough space to open the right refrigerator door fully? (I know someone else asked, but I didn't see an answer.) Here's mine: The 26" finished end panel covers the entire black side of the refrigerator plus the gap behind the refrigerator. It looks much more finished this way. The depth of the end panel was determined by the depth of the refrigerator carcass (24-1/8") + the depth of the gap b/w the refrigerator & the back wall (approx 1-7/8"). [The gap was the space needed for the required air clearance, the plug, anti-tilt mechanism, and the plumbing for the ice maker & water dispenser. Only 1/2" air clearance was needed, so whatever was needed to accommodate the other items determined the back spacing.] [Edited for typos] Here is a link that might be useful: Link to slideshow describing how I built in a refrigerator This post was edited by buehl on Tue, Jul 2, 13 at 1:01...See MoreAnyone have a fridge that sticks out from wrap around cabinet
Comments (9)What refrigerator (make & model) do you have? What is the depth of the refrigerator carcass/box, i.e., without the door? My refrigerator is CD and the carcass is 24" deep. But, with air space and other things, it ended up sticking out 26" so we have 26" deep end panels surrounding it. The doors & handles stick out past that...to approx 31" total. For just about all refrigerators except true built-ins, the doors must stick out past the cabinets, end panels, and counters to open fully. Here's mine: If yours is a standard depth, it will stick out further. But, if you still build it in, it will make a big difference in how it looks! If it's on an interior wall, look into recessing it into the wall...that will gain you 3-1/2" to 4" or so....See Moreidrive65
