height of range hood - advice needed quickly!

I need advice quickly my hood installer will be here soon!

I'm getting a 30" gas range and the hood is being installed today. It's 18" high x 30" wide x 24" deep.

I tested with cardboard mounting it at 30" high (specs. recommend 30"-36"). I think it will be a head banger at that height (I'm 5'-10" and my husband is 6'-2") We tested 36" and that seems to be the height necessary for my husband to clear when leaning over the range. It just looks so high to me. We have 7'-10" ceilings so the top would be approx. 2" lower than the ceiling.

Do you think this will look odd or is this height "normal"?

I'm 5'10", my DH is 6'5" (DD is 5'10" & DS is 6'2" as of last week!).

Our hood, a Vent-A-Hood SEPH18-242, is 42"W x 24"D x 18"H (+ duct work to take it to the ceiling)

It's mounted approx 30" over a 36" electric cooktop.

None of us have yet bumped our heads on the vent hood (at least no one has told me about it). I was also worried about head bumping and got the "emerald lip" so there wouldn't be any sharp corners. I think you automatically adjust to its presence. So, I wouldn't worry about 30".

If you want to go up the interior wall, I suggest that you build the wall with 2 x 6s to provide 5.5 inches of internal gap. Then a 4 or 5 inch by 12 or 14 inch duct will fit. This will cost two inches of room on one side or the other. Eight inch circular duct has an area of about 50 square inches. 4 x 14 is a bit more (56), but square duct has more frictional pressure loss than round duct. If I were doing it, I would use fire-code sheet rock on those walls, and insulate the duct with mineral wool. This would minimize possible rattles from the blower, which I would put on the roof if possible, and provide some slight additional protection in case of a grease fire. Use only galvanized steel duct (stainless steel would also be OK :). kas

Very complicated topic. Any high cfm hood will make noise but you should go approx. 1200 cfm. To keep noise down, go with a remote blower (externally mounted on the outside of the building) - plan the exhaust to be on the side of the house where esthetics are not as important. Always go at least 6" wider than the range on an island hood (12" even better). With a commercial type range, choose a hood with Baffle filters (like a Viking). Always get the best quality hood you can afford when you go into an island. Cheaper hoods use ligher and weaker materials making the hood prone to shaking and wobbling with the opening of windows or doors. Budget minimum $4000 for a quality island hood with a blower. One of the biggest issues will be the 12' ceiling. most duct covers on quality hoods will only offer options upto 10'. To accomodate the 12' height most people will built a drywall or wood enclosure for the first 2'. Looks great. Hope this helps

Please note that you should ideally have a 36" hood over a 30" range, in particular if you have a gas range. Around here, most of the contractors already know that and this seems the standard configuration in new construction. In other parts of the country, contractors frequently don't inform themselves as much about what it takes to make a kitchen really functional vs. just making it look pretty. So, it is often on the home owner to point out these technical details. As you mentioned that you want a hood with a deep capture area, I'd like to give a recommendation for ModernAire. We have one of their hoods and are extremely happy with it. Due to various constraints with a deck right above the kitchen, we couldn't get a remote blower nor an inline filter. So, things are a little noisier than we'd ideally have liked it. But since ModernAire builds all their hoods to order, we got exactly what we wanted. Our hood it mounted above head height and is extra deep to easily capture the front burners, even when you consider the expanding plume.

ditto. it's kind of hard to bump your head, even if you're tall (i'm 6'0') because the range/cooktop is blocking you from moving forward. if you lean forward, your height is reduced.

i was worried about bumping my head and had decided to mount my VAH 33" above my cooktop. of course, when the contractors installed it, i wasn't around, and they did it at exactly 30" despite my multiple specifications of 33".

i was very upset. six months later, it's fine, and i'm actually happy that it's lower, since that gives me better capture. the only time i've ever bumped my head is when i've purposely stuck my head up there to clean or remove the squirrel cage or something.

Thank you all. It really helps to hear some first hand experiences with the mounting height. It turned out the installer was not able to install it yesterday, but he left the hood with us so now we can hold up the actual hood and get a better feel for what we might like.

edlakin nailed it. Mine is 34 inches, I am 5'10" and have never come close to head banging. If you consider the ergonomics of cooking, you rarely lean directly right over pots and pans but rather more look over them while standing in front of the range. If and when you do get over the pots direcly, you are bent over reducing your height. My previous hood was at 30 inches and it was nota problem either.
