12 ft tall ceiling range hood - need advice

in process of building so flexibale. Kitchen will have 12 ft ceilings and wood beams. can work around beams for installation-no big deal. Husband is the chef I am the home builder. He has a high end stove (36 inches) that I am making an island for. I am just now looking at hoods. I would appreciate any insight and recommendations for web sites. The big thing is the blower noise--So many are loud at lower fan levels. Also I assume I will need extra an extra stack for the height.

Very complicated topic. Any high cfm hood will make noise but you should go approx. 1200 cfm. To keep noise down, go with a remote blower (externally mounted on the outside of the building) - plan the exhaust to be on the side of the house where esthetics are not as important. Always go at least 6" wider than the range on an island hood (12" even better). With a commercial type range, choose a hood with Baffle filters (like a Viking). Always get the best quality hood you can afford when you go into an island. Cheaper hoods use ligher and weaker materials making the hood prone to shaking and wobbling with the opening of windows or doors. Budget minimum $4000 for a quality island hood with a blower. One of the biggest issues will be the 12' ceiling. most duct covers on quality hoods will only offer options upto 10'. To accomodate the 12' height most people will built a drywall or wood enclosure for the first 2'. Looks great.

Some companies will make a duct cover or an extension for a high ceiling -- but you have to decide it that is a look and a limitation in choices you want.

I have a Best by Broan and am pleased with the noise level and performance, but if I had an attic space above, I might have had room for a silencer or to hang the blower so it wouldn't be on a hard surface to create more vibrations. Since you are building and have the option to create what you want or need, I would suggest going to their website and downloading the catalog in pdf. Near the back they address installation issues, remote blowers and I think silencers too. They also address how many additional cfms and larger capture space for higher than average installations or duct runs. I found that information helpful.

All nice chimney hoods. I came in late on this topic, also 8' ceiling, but looking for bead board chimney wood hood. They said chimney part would b trimmed to 9-10" and 23" for hood and 3.5" for crown. Does anyone have this combo?? Not sure if it would look funny. Thx

Concerned? YES! I fear your installer is out of his league. First, cooking ventilation ducts contain grease and may support a grease fire. Under no circumstances should the kitchen ventilation duct contain a gap between hood and roof. I can imagine greasy air being blown into one's attic, bringing back memories of the Cambridge Massachusetts Swift meat packing plant fire ca. 1963. Second, attic ventilation should not be compromised by having the cooking ventilation take over its only egress path unless the attic venting is replaced by a different means. There would be a modest reduction in actual flow rate using a smaller duct. Baffle and MUA pressure losses usually dominate, so the amount of reduction is difficult to estimate, particularly without knowing the duct length and the blower's fan curve. Your likely 800 CFM actual flow rate from the 1200 CFM rated blower through a ten-inch duct might only drop to 700 CFM through an eight-inch duct. The smaller duct would be expected have more turbulence induced noise. It would normally be best to use a ten-inch sized roof cap and ten inch duct. A damper at the roof cap and at the hood are recommended. For a more refined determination, the duct ideally should be sized so that for the actual achieved flow rate the air velocity falls between 1000 and 2000 ft/min to minimize deposition of grease. The lower number is better for minimizing deposition, recent studies show, when the ducting is cold. Ducting in use is normally warm from the kitchen air, unless it is very cold in the attic. So northern climes want a larger duct diameter. I use a Fantech 10-inch silencer myself. Note that these are fairly large so both the in-line blower and silencer sizing should be known before planning the duct path. You may find it convenient to order some interface parts from Fantech at the time you order the silencer. Note that the silencer suppresses sound from the direction away from the hood, so given the option, the silencer should be close to the hood and the blower farther away. kas

we almost done with our reno heres my vent hood with an 8ft ceiling we used a zline insert I wanted the GE but delivery wasn t until September. My hood top is removable in case we ever need to get in there. The band around the hood matches my maple island.

I have 11' ceilings & I have a chimney style Vent-A-Hood with the chimney going all the way to the top. I ordered the 4' duct cover from VAH & it's one piece. If I had been on this forum at the time, I probably would have had the duct cover made at a local metal fabricating shop to save money. My hood is an internal blower with 600 CFMs over a 36" pro range & the ventilation is fine; I don't have a grill or griddle built into the range. I probably would have gone with a larger blower to err on the side of caution, but there wasn't a way to use 10" dia. ducting in my situation. It's my understanding that island applications need high CFMs & wider capture area to do the job properly.

More CFMs than otherwise. Wider capture area.

Where will the air come from? You need an equal amount of new air coming in as the air being blown out.
--- What climate is this house in, and do you close the windows fully in winter?

What size is your duct going to be?
