well, our project is a total renovation (gut and rebuild of a former fourplex to a single family house) - so the kitchen is just one small part. here are some pictures....

at the gutted stage:

looking through the archways (which are the mudroom, butler pantry and walk in pantry) you can see the future home of the kitchen:

here's my island slab: the perimeter will be uba tuba... i have idea what this color is called. my granite guy is indian and i can hardly understand his english :)

small slab for the butler pantry - it's getting a pretty copper sink and i think this will be so pretty - again, no clue on the name of the color?:

I'll try to post more when we are finished. you all are a great source of inspiration and information. i've mostly lurked - but gotten lots of great ideas - even late in the game that are going to make the kitchen so fabulous! thanks!

We usually have crappy weather, we get lots of rain, but this year it is beyond ridiculous. We are getting 4 or 5 days in a row with no let up in the rain and big storms, than a crappy day and then more stormy days. It feels like the house is going to lift off its foundations and that I am going to be off to kansas to see the wizard. I forget what the sun looks like! It has been above average temperatures (17c yesterday) one day then freezing the next. We will get 4-5 inches of snow that turns to rain and then gets washed away. I forget what the sun looks like! The dogs and I are getting fat as we have not been doing anything and it has been tuff to even get out for a decent walk. My poor better half is working in the middle east this week and the weather has totally delayed her travel plans forcing her to have to overnight in a hotel at London's Heathrow airport at a cost of 185 british pounds which is close to $400 for a stinking night. The rain took a pause today and I figured I would go out and check out the garden. First thing I notice was that the neighbour's fence had blown down. The moose was though the hill garden recently: Here is the square foot garden beside the cabin today: I think I was talking with EG about swiss chard a while back and here it is after several frosts. I cut this chard to the ground in the fenced square foot garden a couple weeks back and you notice even in this weather it has grown a bit. Amazing stuff and so good with garlic and a little chicken broth. The creek is eroding away beside the creek square foot garden. I hope it stops there, Next year I am going to have to put rocks on the side of the bank here. Here is the strawberry patch where the creek overflowed. The two new areas that I planted square foot style have a bit of sand and silt but I hope will be ok. The creek has really suffered some erosion this last month. ...

I prefer dark countertops with light cabinets. If you go with something light, you will have a monochromatic tone with the cabinets. I think something dark and rich will create a nice contrast with the cabinets and help bring out the richness of the floor. Check out some of the brown granites, like antique brown, and darker greens like Uba Tuba and Peacock green. Volga Blue is a gorgeous granite that I've seen on this site. It has black and hints of blue that are to die for! It would help to know how the adjoining room was decorated-light and airy, or darker and warmer.

LOL! Punamytsike, don't ever worry. If I'm not "feeling" the advice, I just don't take it! No hard feelings. It's funny, though, that you say that, because the minute I got it done I thought, "Blue toile wallpaper would be stunning in there, and would pull together all of my blue and white pieces that I have all over the LR. I even did a mockup of it: However, for now, I do like the green. You're right that there's no other greens around, but it's so subtle (in person, at least) that it just acts as a neutral. Plus, once I get the decorations inside tweaked a bit more, you don't see as much of it. I ended up refinishing the writing surface last night, too. I put the green cubbies back in, and I really, really like it (for now, at least!). I like that the green is just a little bit of the unexpected, and the secretary has that "changed over time" look. I also had another toile wallpaper in reds and golds, that *would* totally tie into the LR, but it was just soooo predictable. It looked lovely when I held up the sample, but it just didn't seem to have any personality, IFYKWIM. If I ever want to change it, it'll be a small job to paint the cubbies black, but for now I think I'll leave them as-is. I'm so jealous your kitchen reno is going so fast. (no not really. Happy for youl) Breezygirl, our contractor quoted us 3 months for a full condo redo. We were supposed to be in by Sept. HAHAHAHA! Most likely we'll be in by in by mid Nov if lucky. If I were you, I'd double the time given, not just add a month. If you only add a month, then you'll be stressed and unhappy. If you double it and the GC gets finished in less time, you'll be happy. When we started DH believed the GC. I knew better and tried to explain to him that 3 months actually means 6. I'm not stressed, he is and I'm usually the one who gets stressed. I expect things to go wrong, things to be late, etc.

Oh, you've got me hooked.
besides the beautiful cabinets and granites, the design for my kitchen may be similar. So I'm dying to see how yours turn out.

- Wondering about your appliances: type and size/dimensions
- if you couldn't put your fridge there, and had to put it at the end to the Right of the sink, how strange would it look and feel, having all your appliances/sink on 1 wall?

huango, i think the fridge could work fine along the same wall as the sink - in fact, it would help separate the living area from the kitchen which is not a bad thing in my opinion. i'll keep you posted!

Yeah! I am so glad you posted your pics. I saw your exterior pics ons the decor site and was wondering about the interior. Looks wonderful. Love all the contrasts.

i forgot to add info on the appliances.... the frige is a ss, side by side, not cabinet depth (so tired of not having the capacity - so made an extra deep recess for it) - kenmore. the range is a 36" pro style, stainless steel fratelli onofri - taking a chance on this one - since I have no information on this - but budget dictates something far less expensive than the 36" thermador I had originally planned. bosch dishwasher. countertop convection mw, that's the missing cabinet - the cab will be made to fit the mw so it looks built in.

i'm using two silgranit sinks (found them here - thanks!) - a large single bowl for the clean up area, smaller round in the island, just bought the airswitches for the gd. the light fixtures are super budget home depot - we're on our last dime to get this done :)

i found my island granite color - delicatus still have no idea on the copper looking one - anyone know what color granite that is? i'll ask the granite guy again and write it down this time.

Looks great.

Very similiar to our kitchen layout. We also have the walk through butlers pantry opposite the walk in pantry. This works very well for us although we actually use the butlers pantry for a bar area....but have the coffee maker there to be out of the way.

We would not have changed a thing with the flow, you should enjoy it.
