More questions about faucets - reach

So... what is the OPTIMUM reach in relation to a sink? Is there a formula of some kind, ie spout reach should be xx inches in front of, over or behind drain? If you have a pullout, is this as critical?

In my continuing quest for a faucet I can live with, I'm still trying to find a single handle - ideally ON the tap (not next to it) - pullout that isn't quite so big and thus am considering a couple of prep sink faucets. These are typically shorter, but I notice that the spout reach is also smaller. Is a 6-8" reach sufficient for a full size sink?

My sink is a pretty modest Blancospex 19x21x7 undermount.

Thanks for any further advice/knowledge/suggestions/humour-to-keep-me-from-pulling-my-hair-out!
