I don't know how you feel about lazy susans (there are some really neat configurations out there now) but you need 12" on either side of the corner for one. So, you could move the stove down to 12" from the corner and do a lazy susan for your pots and pans and that leaves you with 18" on the other side of the stove which is a nice size for a bank of drawers for cooking utensils, small casserole dishes etc.

The other configuration you could do if you didn't want to be so close to the corner is still 12" for a lazy susan, a 6" pullout for spices/oils, and then a 12" bank of drawers for cutlery, food wraps, kitchen linens etc.
The only problem with a lazy susan is that you need 12" on the sink wall and I think you have 19" from the sink to where the corner turns which leaves you with 7". Maybe could be a pullout for cleaning supplies, or food wrap.

My apologies! I FORGOT to say I have 30" inches after a 12" opening for the corner lazy susan. Sorry Byron! =)

I'm not sure if I need a lot of counter to the right of the stove or if I go to a larger cabinet to either side will it look unbalanced by the uppers???

Oh my, what a conundrum you have. My first question is, do you have a place for pots and pans yet. Is it the lazy susan, because that is what I think you should plot out first.
Do the cabinets have to be balanced? In my estimation - no. I'm function over form especially when it comes to my pots and pans and the ease of getting them out and using them. (Too many years of being down on my hands and knees digging into the back of the lower cupboard forced me to this realization.)
I would do a minimum of 18" on the right of the stove (by the door) for a lower bank of drawers and an upper cabinet which gives you 18" of counter. Two reasons - I think that a 12" upper cabinet is too small to be used effectively, and if you cook anything like I do - sometimes I am in a panic looking for a landing spot for something from the oven or looking for a spot to quickly mix something up and that 18" of counter could be a good spot for that.
That still leaves you with 12" on the other side for a bank of drawers for food wraps, kitchen linens - stuff that should be near your clean up zone. - although you still have the 21" by your DW for that stuff. My second option would be that if you still need to store your pots and pans then I would do 24" on the right side of the stove and then a 6" pullout on the other side for spices/oils. You still have a good balance of counterspace.
A roundabout answer to your question suggests that you should look at what you still need to store and let that dictate how you organize that wall.

If this is a range, is there a pots drawer in it? Is the corner the chopping station? Where will baking prep occur? Beverage station? How much kitchen-related stuff (dirty dishes? groceries?) enters the room from the door to front of house?

How many cooks? growing children? how much of a party house is this?

Think about two people standing in the vicinity of the corner--one at sink and one at range. Now think about two adults at range and another person at sink. Is there sufficient space?

If this is a modest, informal kitchen with one major cook but redefinition during other times, I'd recommend few cupboards by the range itself, but a movable cart with shelves underneath that can be drawn up when an additional plunk space is needed. If you can work it out aesthetically, you can make a range hood that is flanked with some kind of utility shelving OR a pot rack over the open end of the L and treat the corner as a different unit.

Bl/Byron I was leaning towards 18" on the right too, but worried it may be too much counter wasted over there. The lazy susan will house the crock pots, blender, and potatoes and onions. I have the option of 18" of drawers, 18" of a double trash receptacle with a pullout butcher block. Of course as I write that I don't know if that is a good idea, trash and cutting board? =? Hmmm... I'll have a good set of 36" x 30" deep drawers across from the DW, and the 21/27" set of drawers depending if I keep the sink. Still wavering because of the counter/cupboard space it eats, and the combined 14" of stainless flange that has to be wiped down constantly. I love it, but still undecided either way.

Florantha- I see your point and do think I would be more comfortable with a bit more space in the corner. We are not huge entertainers except at the holidays, and moving the stove will already make the flow with the through traffic much easier. Presently I prep up to the left of the sink and having the stove where it is in the pic is new so I am not certain where my new prep zone will be. Beverages and snacks will be north of the stove next to the fridge so that will be away from the work zone.

I'm betting your primary prep space will be between the sink and stove, as you won't want to hop everything over the stove, and the corner offers you the most room there. I would make that into the best, most efficient space you can for yourself...For storage and counter workspace.

I would not go less than 18" on the door side of the range...you need that space for landing space as well as safety zone for the traffic going through the door.

I agree about the Prep Zone...b/w the range and sink is where it will be. It's the ideal location...near a water source and near the range.

I do have one question for you, though. You have a 48" sink. That's very big for a kitchen this size. Do you really need a sink that big? If you changed to a 36" sink base, those extra 12" could be used elsewhere for storage.

If you have 93" on the range wall, then you have room for:

36" corner susan + 9" tray storage + 30" range + 18" cabinet.

OR

33" corner susan + 12" tray storage + 30" range + 18" cabinet.

I think you need some extra space b/w the corner & range for prep space, especially if you stick with the 48" sink.

IIRC, you are the person who is keeping their old 48" sink, correct? I take it you decided to keep it. OK...then it becomes even more important that you maximize cabinet & counter space elsewhere. I would go with the second option above. (33" corner susans are 33" x 36", with a smaller opening b/c of the shorter side, but it allows you to add more usable cabinet space elsewhere.) If you can, I also recommend getting frameless cabinets to get you a bit more storage space.

Hi. I was in a similar position last year and went with symmetrical but looking back I question my decision.

This is my layout from left to right:
30" base, 30" range, 30" base, 30" sink cabinet, 24" DW, wall

I thought it should be symmetrical. However, I hardly use the 30" countertop to the left of the range, using the 30+" to the right of the range between the range and the sink ( have a small sink, so probably 35" of counter space). I do keep my trask under the sink, so I don't have a trash pullout or need for one.

Now I would rethink the layout, and go with a smaller cabinet to the left of the range to have more undistributed counter space to the right of the range going to the sink.

(note my old kitchen had about 20" of counter space on eitehr side of the sink, so having one 30" stretch is huge to me and I am very happy!)

You might ask Jenwrens or Calypsochick how they felt/feel about the narrow space by the range. I think having more prep space between the sink and the range would be nice.

Rhome & Beuhl- I do think that I HAVE to plan on that corner being my main prep zone and configure that space accordingly, no more being wishy washy about it. I've also been hemmimg and hawing about the corner cabinet in that area and your responses make me think I should definitively do an easy reach corner for more room in the corner, and accessible storage for meal prep. You can stuff a lot of junk in those 24" deep corner cabs but I think in this case I should dedicate the space to cooking supplies, and working ware and find another place to stuff junk. Although I have already purged the area my "hoarding" habits need to be watched for the future!!! =D Repeat to self--Organized Function First!

Beuhl, you are right- I do have the vintage sink and you are right again when you say it is too large for my kitchen. As much as I love it, both for looks and function, it is a space hog and I need to commit to losing it. Anyone want to list all the benefits of a new undermount sink so I don't feel so guilty banishing it to the cellar! I know I would gain storage and a few extra inches means a lot when it comes to increasing drawer size.

A question-- I would love to gain 18" to the right of the sink. If I change the SB to 33" I will gain 15" of counter and storage. My window wall could then become a 27" drawer, a DW, 33" SB, an 18" double trash pullout, and a 12" lazy susan side. The SB would be 3" off center of the window stile. Would that matter if I mount the faucet center to the stile, fooling the eye? Will the pullout to the right of the sink be too hard to access as I stand in that area?

Stacy, I think I know what you mean, more uninterrupted counter space is more important in the end than balance?

If it helps, I waffled on this too---we have a similar L with 108" on each side. In the end I designed to maximize space between the sink and range (at the advice of lots of GWers!) assuming it would be the primary prep zone, and used a blind corner cabinet instead of a lazy susan in order to put 27" pot drawers next to the range. I initially planned a 15" cabinet on the door side of the range, changed it to 18" at the very last review of the cabinet specs (partly at suggestion of cabinetmaker who thought we had room to do the bigger cabinet and would like it better), and then worried for weeks that I'd made a big mistake doing that. I didn't---while we aren't using it yet, the cabinets are in and I've walked through actions in the space. It's perfect---any less counter to the right would have been barely usable, but 18" (which will be 19" once counters are on) is enough for one person to stand there and another in the corner prep area, if need be. And I worried that it wouldn't look balanced, but it looks completely natural with 29" on one side and 18" on the other with a 36" range in the middle--nothing sticks out as being too big or too small.

Our space goes:
Side A: 2" filler to center sink cabinet, 23.5" dishwasher, 36" sink cabinet, 18" door to blind corner unit, 2.5" filler for handle clearance, 24" blind corner.

Side B: 24" blind corner, 2" filler, 27" pot drawers, 36" range, 18" drawers

I had the cabinet people do 2" filler instead of 2.5" on the stove wall in an attempt to pull the cabinets further from our door, since I was panicky the day of install. While I don't think it was necessary in the end---we had room to spare!---it works well and you really can't tell that the two fillers at the corner are slightly different sizes.

Me too, but at least you are so close! =) Just curious, what do you plan on storing in your blind cabinets, and will they be lighted?

A corner susan will hold plenty of pots and pans with the added benefit of putting whatever pot or pan you need in front. In our old kitchen, all of our pots & pans, colanders, pie tins (I have about 8 or 9 of various sizes), cake pans, and several serving pieces in our lazy susan.

Based on my experience w/my mother in-law's kitchen as well as my KD's very strong recommendation to avoid blind corner units b/c they don't last and b/c if something drops of you have to crawl inside the cabinet to retrieve it b/f closing the unit, I very rarely recommend anyone get one.

In your case, Never_Ending, you don't need one. Your corner susan will hold as much as a blind corner cabinet plus you get a tray storage cabinet (or pullout or filler pullout, if you prefer) next to the range.

[A lazy susan has a center pole and has a bit less usable space b/c of it - but the door can be attached to it and rotate in when you open the susan. Super susans have no center pole but the doors cannot be attached. However, they do offer a bit more room and can hold larger items.]

Two thoughts. I use my corner susan like a pantry. It's handy to the stove and I find it holds a ton.

This may not work for you but I see it so I'll throw it out just as an idea -- expect it could affect venting but perhaps not. I could see putting your refrigerator on the end of the run where you now have the range and fliping the range into the space where you now plan the fridge and cabinet. I don't see exact dimensions so perhaps it's not possible but if it is and it appeals it would give you sort of a range console with storage and sitting down space on each side?

Then the main prep area would be between the sink and the fridge and the corner there is no longer as congested. Susan could be for whatever storage works best.

I think we're in the minority of people who aren't big corner susan fans, which is one reason we didn't use one---I actually liked (!!) our old blind corner cabinet a lot, though our vintage cabinets were shallower than modern ones, so I was cognizant of that in planning the new one. The main reasons we didn't do a corner susan, though, were that I would have had to give up the pot drawers (with a susan, we'd have had 6" pullout/12" for susan on one side, or more likely some sort of inventive setup for tray storage, and then 12" for susan, 18" drawers on the other, which wasn't worth it) and my husband really didn't like any of the susan doors we saw (the kind that fold out, the kind that spin around, etc.) Had we gone that route, though, the super susans seemed like a nice solution.

For our blind corner, we're getting a Hafele Magic Corner with a drawer above it---first choice was the Magic Corner II, which sits behind a standard door, but that didn't fit, so we went with Magic Corner I, which is door-mounted. Not in yet so can't say how we'll like it, but DH fell in love with one we saw in a showroom somewhere. (He likes gadgets.)

We only have lower cabinets, so they're not lighted. (Had we done uppers there, though, we would not have wrapped the corner---would just have had them on the range wall.) Plan is to store appliances like the rice cooker and blender (and perhaps infrequently used cookware that gets bumped from the pot drawers) in there.

My very favorite corner solution, though, is to do standard cabinets and then open the blind space to the room behind it---we couldn't do this because our dining room has columns with built-in cabinets in the corners (hard to describe, but basically 14" of the 24" space was inaccessible, and 10" wide drawers seemed silly). But if you can do it, you get useful storage on all sides.

I wouldn't flip the range and fridge, because you will need to walk across a doorway with pots and water in that case, which I wouldn't want to do.

Artemis...my favorite as well! We did just that in one of our peninsulas...and made the cabinet "facing out" our pet center where we keep dog food, treats, leashes, etc. In the top drawer, we keep flashlights, batteries, etc. (The other peninsula has a corner sink base for our prep sink.)

Rocco thanks! I spent some time today thinking about that corner and labeling this new prep area, and thought the lazy susan might be a very good hands-on pantry. I'm glad to hear it works well. I originally (and do) have the stove up above in the sketch like you suggested, and while I like it a resounding chorus said to move it. =) My kitchen traffic flow will be better for it, even if I am having a hard time getting my mind to prep somewhere else! Hey though- when you re-did your city kitchen over was the Farrow and Ball worth every penny for that beautiful color? I would so love to use one of their colors for my cabinets, but I can already see my DH's rolling of the eyes!
