Long kitchen, big island, 30" range, "huge" slim island hood?

I have come to terms with the kitchen in a house I'm buying and will bite the bullet on an island hood (after an exhausting look at alternatives). I have finally found a hood I like which is a stream line Faber Diamante Isola. So here's the thing, I want to mount it a few inches higher than norm (maybe 3") so I was thinking of going to a 42" over a 30" island range. The problem is that after the 36" it jumps up to 48". This is an open plan kitchen; the island is around 7ft long and double wide. I haven't measured the length of the kitchen as a whole but it is very long. Part of me wants to put a streamline Faber up there in a 48" and just make a statement of it. Can you think of a reason I should not?
P.S I am keeping the setup and cabinets in the kitchen as is.

Maybe add a single induction burner to the side of the range so the extra large size makes sense? The thing about induction burners is that you can always use them for counter space when they're not on. You could keep a cutting board on top of it too.

I like the induction idea! My husband wants a range hood on the island but IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure how much I personally will use itÃ¢ÂÂ¦but I might who knows. To me it would look better aesthetically if the range hood was some sort of slim deal that was more in scale with the island and kitchen as a whole. For an open plan it might look stupid to choose the range hood size in relation to the 30Ã¢ÂÂ range instead of the room design in the big picture. IÃ¢ÂÂm worried that a 36Ã¢ÂÂ hood might look like a strange dot in the middle of the big room whereas a larger size would be in scale and look more like a feature.

Doug's wife would hate my fridge location, lol. And, Lavender, I'm not so organized but was raised by a mom who would yell at you if you stood with the door to the fridge open for very long as it let "the cold out!" so I automatically think through what I need and where it's at so I don't let too much cold out. mlogin, it's great that you're striving to incorporate the 31 Rules into your design. Just know that many of us find we have to compromise on one or more of them. I chose to do so on my fridge location and it is working out just fine for me. Below is my kitchen showing the former fridge placement and the current one. Current placement is actually in the opening between the laundry/pantry room. It does impede traffic through that route once in awhile but only for a few seconds so it isn't a big deal. I would rather experience a bit of congestion there than at my sinks, range or dishwasher locations. Or at my prep space or baking area. I just strongly feel that the fridge is the appliance you are standing at doing something the least time of all the appliances. If any appliance has to be placed in a less optimal position, I would choose the fridge. Remember that you also want your fridge on the edge of your working spaces so that someone who just wants to access it for a drink or snack isn't walking back-and-forth inside your work areas. I just don't see another place in your kitchen plan where your fridge is accessible to both cook and a drinker/snacker. Of course, someone more creative than I am may suggest a layout none of us have thought of yet but I think it would require re-arranging most of the rest of your kitchen to find another good location. Again, I'm not writing to try to influence you one way or the other but just to give you as much info as possible to consider in order for you to make the best decision for you and your family.

how about one of these? "We have 9 foot ceilings, so they didn’t take them to the ceiling because they said it would make them tall and skinny..." Really? I call BS. Here are my cabinets to the ceiling with 9 foot ceilings. I am beyond happy that my cabs go to the ceiling, eliminating the need to dust above them. My kitchen looks larger and brighter without the dark shadows above the cabs, too. My cabs are custom so we were able to spec 46" uppers with 8" crown but you can go with 42" tall uppers and 12" crown. I asked but you didn't answer: is there a reason why you haven't considered moving the fridge to the sink wall? That would give you wider aisles and a larger island, plus more room around your range and a better meal prep flow of fridge to sink to counter to range. I mocked up how that might look. You can use your existing fridge (that saves $$) and pull the base cabs out to create 30" deep counters, which will make your full size fridge look like a counter depth model. I decreased the depth of the cabs on the opposite side of the kitchen to 12" deep for a full run of pantry cabs. You may be able to eliminate more uppers in your kitchen with the additional storage the pantry cabs provide, which means that you could make the window over the sink even wider. Here's how that might look in your kitchen. I didn't draw it up this way but your one window would become either 2 slider windows or 2 single hung windows or, as they did in the above kitchen, 3 single hung windows. I shifted the island away from the sink counter, giving you 45" aisle between counters (42" between fridge door and counter) and 42" aisles between pantry cabs and island (assuming that your kitchen is 13'/156" wide). That also gives you more room around your range so a wider range and hood would look more in scale. That said, I agree with others: an oversized hood isn't the right fit for your kitchen. I also think it's an odd choice to spend so much $$$ on a very detailed, oversized hood over a 30" range. I think it will look like you ran out of money half way through the remodel so all you could afford was a 30" range, not the 36" pro style range you had intended to get. And definitely spend the money to upgrade to drawer bases. That's a splurge that you will never regret. Ever.

aaaand I don’t even have a fan over the stovetop....eeek ....how have I managed to live ...happily...like this..... for 19 years?. And I'm guessing that if you actually cleaned your ceiling you'd find it is not quite as clean as you think. When I moved into my NY place the previous owners did lots of stir fry cooking with an inadequate hood. And this is with a stove against the wall. It took me over 2 weeks of daily scrubbing to get the grease off the tops of the cabinets, the walls, under the cabinets, etc, yet at first glance the place looked clean. There's a very good chance that the range you grew up with, and the one you're using now, have nowhere near the power of a BlueStar. Agreed!

I think there are lots of reasons to have a wider hood than cooktop. I ended up setting my rice cooker on my rangetop the other day because I wanted to vent it, I'm sure people do the same with other portable electrics like coffee makers, deep fryers, etc. Are you sure you want a 30" range when you have room for 36"?

Kksmamma, would I like a larger range? Well sure! Would I get use out of it? No! I have been thinking about what the previous owners of this house was like. There are miles of countertop along the wall run. All the uppers are 15Ã¢ÂÂ deep nice wood. There are two upper corner cabinets and two lower corner cabinets with the largest Lazy SusanÃ¢ÂÂs one could possibly imagine. There are pull-outs galore in all the base cabinets. The doors are very thick solid cherry. YetÃ¢ÂÂ¦there is one little 30Ã¢ÂÂ slide-in range and no extra wall ovens. There is one regular sized refrigerator a mile down at the end. In this good sized kitchen the sink is directly behind the range. There is not even a recirculating fan to be found. Although I have never had the need for a prep sink in the smallish kitchens I have owned, this kitchen is begging for one. ItÃ¢ÂÂs just me and my husband now so I really donÃ¢ÂÂt have the need for bigger and more appliances but itÃ¢ÂÂs odd that this kitchen seemed to want to be a real chefÃ¢ÂÂs kitchen but fell short.
IÃ¢ÂÂm getting very sick of island range hood shopping and am thinking of the XtremeAir px05, it has the look of the Faber that I love, has decent cfm's and the stainless baffles I want and comes in a 42Ã¢ÂÂ and is half the price of the Faber. I really like the Faber but the model I want comes in 36Ã¢ÂÂ and 48Ã¢ÂÂ and IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking IÃ¢ÂÂll be safer on the paranoia as to scale vs. big island small range with a 42Ã¢ÂÂ.

Or, in the running is the 42" Zephr Anzio. I really like the looks but wish it had baffles instead of mesh.

My husband would love a big hood like that! Then the deep fryer, the George Foreman grill and anything sauteing on the range could ALL be vented :)

Hi Lavender! I'm not sure which one to get but need to make a decision soon. Now that I have it narrowed down to three I think I'll let husband pick. I wish I could find the shape of the Fager or Zephr but 42" and with stainless baffles . The XtremeAir came close but it is much bulkier. Not sure if husband will like that.

Well surprise surprise husband likes the cheapest one, the XtremeAir px05 above. I think IÃ¢ÂÂm ok with that. Why? Because we want to mount a few inches higher so we will do the 42Ã¢ÂÂ over a 30Ã¢ÂÂ electric range and this models canopy is a tic deeper than my Faber Diamante pick (still love). IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking by going a bit deeper and wider I could gain some of the suction lost by a few inches higher mount. IÃ¢ÂÂm still a bit nervous as there are few reviews. However, the few that there are are favorable.

IÃ¢ÂÂm about to push the Ã¢ÂÂbuyÃ¢ÂÂ button so if anyone thinks this is a bad idea please speak up.
