Will x-post this in Appliances, but thought I might get some good feedback here. I have a new Frigidaire Gallery wall oven and I'm not sure it's working properly.

A small overspill on a pie caused a huge smoke out --and even after we cleaned it up/scraped the charred stuff out after it cooled, it smoked us all out AGAIN when we put in the rest of the dinner to bake, and made ALL the baked food taste like smoke.

The oven window is now stained an iridescent MINT green from the smoke, and I can't wipe it off. I have a GREEN oven window!!

I can't even describe how disappointed I am - I feel like my 2 month old oven is ruined. I haven't tried the self-clean function yet but I'm afraid to create more smoke. It was in the air for hours yesterday.

I had this happen on a smaller scale from ONE drip of cheese from a pizza a few weeks ago, but the relatively small pie spill caused major havoc in the kitchen yesterday. My mom who was doing a lot of the cooking and who has 10 yr old GE Profile ovens, was completely flummoxed and didn't understand why the Frigidaire was smoking so much. Right now, I'd prefer my old 1976 ovens to this smoky mess. I always had junk/drips at the bottom of the old ovens and set the fire alarm off maybe ONCE in 5 years.

Is this normal for newer ovens?? I'm so crushed!!!

I have no advice. Just chiming in for moral support. I'm sorry this happened, especially for a big dinner! Hope you get lots of answers.

It is clear it is high time a manufacturers make mouse proof slide in ranges! Everyone says you can't keep them out of your house, though I have hired an exterminator and for now, they have stopped. I have talked to neighbors and friends who all retain exterminators year round, for this purpose. I just bought a 20 year old house in April and in November the mice moved in so quickly, even tho I got an exterminator, they ruined my dishwasher, chewing the wires underneath, and my range/oven, invading all parts of that. I have plugged all visible holes in cabinets and walls, with steel wool, and that has stopped those access points, but now, I must undertake a partial kitchen remodel, to find the other holes, before I replace the appliances! Also shopping appliances which have more protection from mice. Ultimate solution seems to be a wall oven and cook top, as they are enclosed in cabinetry. but yes power and gas lines would have to be cut in cabinet/wall so tightly fitted so as not to allow 1/4" hole for mice. As for dishwashers, there are a few brands that cabinet the underside and don't leave it open for mice to play in the wires, Bosch is one. Same with ranges. I have found a couple of European brands that have less holes in the back. My current brand, GE duel fuel, is like it was made to be a climbing toy for mice! They love the range. there are lots of ways through it for a mouse. So next range will be European or wall oven and cooktop. These solutions are twice as expensive, not counting the cabinet remodel. That is why I think is time for manufacturers to at least TRY to make these kitchen products mouse proof. Yes, I am throwing away the old ones, such a waste, totally not green. I did find one resource which showed putting rat wire, less than 1/4" mesh wire, over the one opening along the bottom of the rear of a European range, where that was the ONLY opening. I am planning to do that, but the range must vent, so don't use foil! I am planning to purchase the most enclosed range I can find. Then, yes, the suggestion of how clean you must keep things, cleaning the grates and range top and oven, every time you use it, and all crumbs off your floors, and counters, and even taking out the trash every night. they are nocturnal, so doing this before dark, is a good practice. Less attractants, has to help. Nothing to eat, should help.

Ours is also in an upper cabinet with the cable run through the bottom of the cabinet. The height of the TV hides the cable. The cable/satellite box also sits in that corner (it couldn't be put inside a cabinet b/c of the remote needed to change channels, etc. One additional advantage of putting it inside the cabinet is that if you later decide you don't want a TV there or decide to move it elsewhere, you won't have an unused cable outlet sitting on/breaking up your backsplash. One warning though...it does reduce the usable depth of that area by a little b/c the cable hook up sticks out an inch or two b/f dropping down to the floor of the cabinet. We store bowls there so it's really not a problem for us, but it might for you if you utilize the entire depth of the bottom of the cabinet. Sorry for the mix-up, pepper. I guess I think of "adjacent" as having a corner between the sink and range, and "next to" on the same straight counter run. I think it would be very convenient to have one just around the corner from the other as it would only require a couple of steps from one to the other, as long as there's enough prep room. I was so disappointed to have to stop the project, just after the plans were basically finished and just before we signed with a contractor, that I put everything dealing with plans into a box in the garage. Therefore, I'll have to rely on my memory-- uh-oh! I considered the possibility of adding a lowered section onto the island to serve as a kitchen table, as I don't care for island seating. In that way I thought I could use the current nook space in some capacity, but because it bumps out from the other wall and has a window, I realized that I wouldn't be able to put a longed-for hutch there (close to dw,) nor the fridge, which would have freed up space elsewhere. If I brought the opening to the entry closer to the sink wall, I could reconfigure on the other side of the door, but that would force me to use a prep sink, which I'm not sure I want to do, as well as have the traffic flow take a turn. Right now, my galley kitchen has the sink and stovetop separated by the doorway which means traffic is constantly in my way when I'm cooking. So, back I went to the original plan. My restrictions that force me back are: --Sink under the window (I get so bored too!) --Stovetop or range close-ish to sink and not on island, due to my messy (Indian) cooking style. --Traffic out of my way while cooking! --A separate kitchen table (I just feel more comfortable with this.) --Still can't decide whether a prep sink will be helpful to me --Enclosed kitchen, meaning not open to the family room because of forementioned messy cooking. --Hope to have a raised dw due to back problems, but probably no room for a counter between it and the sink. This is what led me to consider using the nook space for more counter space and/or hutch. My traffic flow goes from what would be your dining room/living room door to family room (almost same location for me.) We intend to move a door that is currently near the table that leads to the garage, to the family room instead. What is your doorway to the basement, study, etc. is mine into the dining area; (it's too small to be called a proper dining room--I'm in a ranch in No. Cal.) You have more space than I will (someday!) but mine will also be mostly a square with the same doorway locations. Those doorways dictate quite a lot! Hope I didn't go too off-topic.

Soup, soup, and more soup....Xmas Eve dinner

Your soup night sounds fab! We did a nod to it being Christmas Eve with a beaded tree for a centerpiece. Ann T., avoid your eyes, and skip the rest. :) Soup was minestrone flavored stone soup. I think the caterer left as much food as was served at our big party, so there were a lot of celery and carrots, grape tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli left. Those were all diced for the soup, plus a couple of onions, half a head of garlic, some yellow vine tomatoes, a bag of baby kale and a white cabbage. So I didn't have to go down to the garage, the base was what I had in the kitchen freezer. That's three cups of low FODMAP chicken stock and three cups of beefy cabbage soup. I added a can of crushed tomatoes, a small can of fire roasted, and a smaller can of tomato sauce, plus vegetarian no-MSG bouillion and a little jarred soup base, for the salt. :) Some pepper, Tabasco (because I was too tired to clean serrano peppers from the garden) and mostly red wine. The starter was salmon salad made from the cranberry mustard salmon skewers leftover, broken up and dressed with what I think was the remoulade from the fried chicken drummettes. It had separated, and was a thick mayonnaise consistency and very herby, with a good acid sharpness that went well with the fish (which hadn't gone fishy). That was served with the leftover tortilla chips and relishes: baby corn, spiced baby carrots, pickle chips, raddishes and mixed olives. I also made some kale chips for something light. :) The soup was served alongside a leftovers casserole: a layer of latkes on the bottom (I thought they'd make it easier to serve but they fell apart), then layers of jewel rice, butternut curry, chopped broccoli, then filled with a bread pudding made from dry, bready donut holes, a (new) pretzel baguette, the chicken from the drummettes, the Moroccan beef cubes from another skewer, a couple of sundried tomato chicken sausages I had in the fridge to add more meat, and a couple of (new) leeks sautéed with a packet of small diced pancetta. There was cinnamon on the donut holes, the flavor of which came up more in the custard than it had on the donuts, but it went well with the garlic pepper I seasoned it with. Dessert was a tarte made from a sheet of frozen puff pastry that needed using. It was brushed with leftover passion fruit sauce, topped with leftover crème anglaise, and leftover fruit. :) There were also everybody's favorite freshly baked Toll House cookies from the Toll House cookie expert and party colored Dutch chocolate half dollars (leftover). The pudding casserole could have been improved upon (custard in the bottom layer under the curry to glue it together--the curry was a rich paste so I thought it would do the job, but it just softened everything--and cut up the donut holes smaller so they'd stick better), but everyone liked it and ate well of it. I heard a few "stuffed"'s. :) My fridges heaved sighs of relief to see so many containers removed! Most of all, we had a delightful evening with loved ones who couldn't be at the big party.

ThreeDaisies awwww that's too bad. They just don't seem to make anything like they used to. That's why I read, read, read as many reviews as I possibly can before making any major purchase. I even subscribe to Consumer's Review.

Thanks for responding.

I bought the oven through a local retailer, not a big box store, so hopefully they'll listen and help fix or replace. I can't believe that the amount of smoke we experienced yesterday is normal. I don't want to do any more baking because it all will taste like smoke. It kills me to have a green window. It looks weird.

I thought that Frigidaire had generally gotten good reviews; I always do a ton of research. I couldn't afford the Bosch oven that I really wanted. :(

I would try the self clean function- after every big holiday roast (hours of turkey or ham, ect), I run the cycle to get all the spatters as my oven always seems to smoke after cooking something like that. It makes a big difference- no smoke after all said and done.

I baked a cake... long story, burnt butter and brown sugar all over the bottom of the oven (thanks Martha Stewart- no the alternate pan did NOT work as you suggested). It was a smokey MESS!

The next day, ran the self clean, and it all just turned to ash, no smoke, no problem. It cycles on and off at lower temps to solve that problem, at least it's supposed to.

I have a Maytag gemini, about 8-ish yrs old.

Well, I'll try the self clean before I fuss at the salesguy at the local store. I'll just have the kids out of the house and a fire extinguisher at the ready! ;p

I once had a very irate lady call our store chewing us out about the amount of smoke her new range made. Well, she had forgotten to remove the taped on bottle of oven cleaning cream that the manufacturer had supplied. So, I always ask if the cavity has been inspected well before being engaged in operation!

So first make sure that you've removed all of the literature and supplies that came with the oven. That includes any tape and tape residue. Tape residue can produce some nasty smoke. Check your storage drawer or broiler drawer if that is how your range is configured.

Then, make sure you've done the required burnoff that new ovens will need. That should be done before actually using it to cook with. It's a stinky process, but you have to heat the oven to 450Â° and keep it there for a couple of hours while any of the machine oil and grease burns off. You should be standing by to operate fans and open any windows while this process occurs. After you've done both of these things, run the self cleaning cycle (Make sure your racks are removed if they aren't also self cleanable. Most aren't.) Let your oven cool and wipe it out with soap and water.

That must have been just terrible to have a smokey holiday
meal. I fear it is your oven. Of course check out the
manuals and paperwork but if you still have issues. Return
the oven. Find out if they can give you credit on another
oven.

I have a Bosch oven but I am not totally happy with little
issues. Overall it gets a B+. It does not smoke at all,
or have any issues with cooking. In fact the cooking aspect
is great. It is the electrical issues on the oven. Two
times in 4 months it would not shut off. I need to
call Bosch to come out and look at it. If it is still
being nasty about shut off. I am getting a new range.
I read Epinions and should have followed advice about
this range.

see if other went through this too.

boxerpups - my new Bosch wall oven has issues too. I love the results, but it shuts off when I open the door for more than a few seconds. No basting allowed. Bosch has replaced two of the boards and will be back on Tuesday to replace the board that controls the door switch. This will be the fifth service call and should be the last part that needs to be replaced. It is all covered under warranty and I got a huge discount on it so I plan to keep it.

Glad to hear that Bosch is being so helpful.
My DW, Refrig and MW are excellent. And over all the
range is pretty good. The electrical issue is worrisome
but I will call them.
