Gel Pro chef's mats--Do they 'walk' by themselves?

We're planning to spring for the 600 bucks to Gel Pro for two of their 6-foot mats. We currently have 8-foot carpet runners with a non-skid backing in front of our sink and range, but they move on their own daily until they're bang up against the cabinets and look awful. We have a porcelain tile that's not slick at all.

Has anyone had a similar problem with Gel Pro? The $600 is a big expenditure for us at this stage, and we don't want to have the same situation.

absolutely not - we have 2 6ft runners and they are solid, sturdy and basically stay where you put them. I suggest getting them at bed bath and beyond with 20% off coupons. If you don't have any coupons sign up at linen's and things for email offers and then u can use them at bbb.We love them!!!!

When I was a very young, and enthusiastic newbie to homemaking, I spent entirely too much money on a set of Henkels Four Star knives. Then, I fretted and stressed about keeping them from getting banged around, wouldn't put them in the dishwasher, and obsessed about keeping them sharp. I ended up losing them during a move (long tale of woe) and I hadn't the money to replace them but still had to cook. So, while shopping in Chinatown one day, I picked up a cheapie cleaver and a few anonymous kitchen knives and realized that I could keep them sharp and not worry about them getting banged around as I could replace them at will. There is a brand, KIWI (made in Thailand), that these little stores carry, and my favorite is 6 1/2 inch long, appx. 2 inch wide blade with a very slight curve in the cutting edge. The end of the blade looks as though it was supposed to be a couple of inches longer, but someone chopped off the end at an angle, with the shorter side of the angle being the blunt side of the knife. These knives are wonderfully sharp when you buy them, made of stainless steel, easy to sharpen on a stone and they cost about $2 a piece. So, I put them in the dishwasher, and throw them in a knife drawer without worry because if one gets knicked or bent, I can simply replace it.

kitchendetective, I have pets that shed, two Labs, but they are outdoor dogs :) No indoor pets here, but, there are a lot of reviews on Amazon from people who DO have indoor pets and give it rave reviews for picking up dog and cat hair :) You should have seen what it PUSHED out from under my sideboard in the dining room :o Along with a couple of years worth of dust bunnies, it brought out a large dead spider and a dried up baby LIZARD :o I just have one question...WHERE'S THE MOMMA LIZARD?? Rachel, I'm "in-between" rugs in my office (where my wood floor is) so the best I can do is tell you that it doesn't run over my bathroom rug that is on porcelain tile. There is tile and carpet in my den. The (wall to wall) carpet is a low profile print that is basically the same height as my tile. When Mint hits the carpet and the bathroom rug, it backs up and turns around and yes, it does the edges of the rug and carpet. Likewise with the Pro Chef Gel Mat in the kitchen. You can use any cleaner you like with the wet mop mode. No, it doesn't heat the water. I have a Bissell steam mop. Mint won't take the place of it but I won't have to use it as often. You can use the pre-treated Swiffer wet cloths or use any floor cleaning product on the included wet mop pad. Course when I use steam, clean I'm just using hot water. When I spot clean something on the kitchen floor, I use my "home-brew" of 50/50 alcohol/water. That's my "go to" cleaner in the kitchen. I spray the water/alcohol mixture on the pad and I spritz it on the floor to keep the pad wet. I dust mopped again today and since the two included dust pads were dirty, I used a Swiffer cloth. After using one cloth in the bathroom, I decided to double the cloths so it would be more pad-like and thicker. I use both sides of the Swiffer cloths. I was skeptical when I first read about The Mint robot. I thought 'how good could this be? All the dirt and crumbs will gather at the leading edge of the pad and start to lose effectiveness'. But all those 115 reviews on Amazon must know something I don't (g) so I gave it a try. I would like to see the charge lasted longer but the product performs so well in every other aspect, I'm not going to complain :)

palimpsest, I didn't mean to offend you if I did. Everybody's experience is different. I come from a large family. My step mother has exactly that setup with the island, the size, the seating, the relationship to the range. Every time she entertains for any number - every single seat is filled and the person in the center behind the sink has to stay pulled back. There are people and dogs running up and down every aisle and clogging everything. And I'm talking about the adults! The bar flys wish the island was deeper. In her setup, the appetizers end up on the island while the rest is cooking and the bar flys would like to be able to reach all of them without moving. As kids grow, they get playmates and perhaps siblings. They all hang around the kitchen - get drinks and snacks, make their own sandwiches and become independent chefs. I regularly splash all over the my 15" tall backsplash. If I had that type of island - a permanent pond would develop back there complete with tadpoles... And I right now have a sleeve damp to the elbow and damp places across the tummy zone - prep for split pea and ham soup. This doesn't mean I think everyone splashes water everywhere (altho dh is actually worse than I). It's a simple statement for the op to hear or ignore. It's the same thing with prep time. If I entertain, nobody sees me do more than a last minute thing - like whipping cream. (might mean I'z control freak) But others in the same family do most things after the crowd arrives and usually with one or two others helping. The thing I like about this kitchen is that all that is possible. I never know if its possible to for anyone satisfy all the needs of whoever is posting until stuff is suggested and the poster accepts it.

I have commercial/industrial fatigue mats - not the gel ones specifically. I've noticed that when I'm wearing shoes, the difference from standing on the bare floor is less night-and-day than when I'm barefoot, but the mat still improves my posture markedly and it's still noticably softer than the bare floor. (Interestingly, an overly soft mat will tire you out FASTER than a properly firm one..) They're the ones with lots of little rubber domes; it has a bit of a 'foot massage' feel to stand on and discourages me from standing on the sides of my feet, which I tend to do when on a hard surface. I would guess that the gel mats would have a similar effect.

I love the idea of these, too. I hope you don't mind if I add a question.

Since the mats are 20" wide, do you have a high edge to trip over if you have wide aisles in your kitchen? The space between my island and the range/prep sink is 50" wide (there are 2 of us cooking regularly and 3 on holidays).

I would put one along my perimeter cabinets where I do most of the standing, but I put my ingredients on the island. When I turn around from one area to the next, is it a trip hazard?

Thanks, everyone. I want to get the striated ones in green, so that's why they're more expensive. I guess this is a new style. $299 is the least I've been able to find them for. I'll check with BBB though to see if they carry the striated version.

wonbyherwits, the carpet runner with the thick no-slip pad underneath is a bit of a trip hazard for the first couple of times, but after that the foot seems to "learn". If our local BBB has the Gel Pro I'm going to go in and see whether I trip; maybe you could do the same.

Wonbyherwits...as Susan said, your foot quickly learns it. The edges are tapered and not a hard rise. It's thicker than the typical rug or mat, but again, you quickly get the feel for it.

My mats are on hardwood. I have 3 side-by-side to cover the width between my range and prep island. They "walked" a bit at first, but I put that rubber mat liner (drawer liner) under it. I've heard others say they do not seem to walk on tile floors.

Thanks! We have hardwoods and after standing all day on Thanksgiving, my feet were killing me.

I was also looking at possibly getting these mats for our new kitchen, but neither of the two size options available would really work for us.

I emailed customer service from letsgel.com and they said they will be able to take orders for custom sizes "sometime in the beginning of 2008". I'm sure custom orders will have an added cost to the already high price, but being able to order whatever size you need may eliminate the problem of tripping over edges or having to lay a couple next to each other.

Mine hasn't moved, but our dog LOVES to sleep on it. Isn't that funny? He has a fluffy pillow, but I guess something about the gel is appealing to him.

Commercial anti-fatigue mats are widely available - Google "anti-fatigue mat" and you'll get lots of sellers. And they're available in a wide range of stock sizes, plus anything custom.

If black or reddish "terra cotta" works for you, that's pretty easy to get; most of the other mat options are really ugly industrial or institutional looking. Gel Pro's biggest selling point is that they have a wider range of "home friendly" finishes.

Black worked for me, so I went the commercial mat route.
