What are the rules of thumb for choosing curtain colors?
Comments (9)I surely don't know the "rules", and would surely like to hear if there are any. I am currently doing a reno to one of our bathrooms. The floor is pretty neutral, the countertop very light and neutral, the wall color very light and neutral and I have chosen a pretty bold stripe to make a roman blind for the window. The towels and rug I just bought are a dark rust and I wanted the drama against the light colors. In the bedroom, I am going to do dead-hang panels and am going to widen them out from the window mainly because our bed is on one of the windows and it was suggested (Les, I believe), that it would help make a better backdrop for the headboard if I did this. There is no other place to put the bed. I am trying for a very calm, serene feel and have chosen a moire that is exactly the wall color. I think it will work well. For the most part, I really don't like drapes or curtains, especially anything heavy looking. I, too, am anxious to hear what others say....See Morefloors, cabs, counters, backsplash...any rules?
Comments (1)No "rules" whatsoever. Rule-wise, design is free as the breeze and wide open. There are, however, a number of general looks that people in general tend to find generally pleasing. My personal preference is for counters that blend with the lower cabinets and the walls behind them. Most people, however, choose counters that strongly contrast and form a horizonal line around the kitchen. So, I guess, what most strongly approaches a rule is the need for you to research to determine the look that most pleases you and take that as a starting point. Comments (8)If you look at historical references, part of the process is deciding what material you want it to look like. Sometimes combinations of wood and composite and areas of plaster were all painted out white and matched the ceiling. Sometimes the cornice was painted to match the trim in a satin finish, especially if the trim was a bold color. Ornamental ceilings like your Adam ceiling would be polychrome with the background in the wall color or a paler version of the wallcolor with the ornament picked out in white (kind of like cameos or Jasperware), or sometimes a lot of color would be used on an ornamental ceiling going as far to pick out details in gold leaf. My impression, thinking about the house in general is that you are going to want to go with (a version of) white in many of the rooms and save the color for the Adam ceiling and other ornamented ceilings....See MoreHi - Any ideas for paint color above green counter top? Comments (59)Here is the shop address and pictures of the valances I had made. They’re lined, the pattern in the larger one is matched up so it looks like one piece and the seams are under the sashes. They’re beyond perfect plus the turn around time was great and they returned all the unused fabric to me. Sorry, the pictures don’t show them very well. Oh! And if you find a style you want that they don’t have on their site, just ask them, they will most likely be able to accomodate you. I plan on having valances for my walk in pantry and our masterbath made by the as well. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheIvyTrellis?ref=l2-shopheader-name...See Moreccoombs1
