Need ideas on cabinets and counter tops that will stay in style!
Comments (8)We are building on a budget as well, and my husband and I are having these same discussions. Well, GreenDesigns might be right technically. But I have always loved white kitchens... even 30 years ago when I used to go through houses with my parents. They are still my favorite today. The cabinet styles of course have changed over the years, but boy I would pick a house with dated white cabinets over oak and brass every day. So I think you are on the right track with your choices. Wood floors also great. I would go with wood/butcher block countertops over laminate though. Even the Ikea wood countertops. Some work required, but laminate is very limiting when you are cooking, even though I know the choices are far better now. I've lived with both (and marble & granite too) and prefer the butcher block. But that's just me. ;) I'm pulling for a combo of marble and butcher block on our build... the marble is my "splurge" item. Even though it's impractical. Can't wait to see what you choose....See MoreIdeas as how to work around a 32" counter top in a 1930s kitchen
Comments (15)I bet the cabinets are built in place. Moving/removing might destroy them. You may end up saving the doors and having new boxes made. Then they can be any height you want. The sink will be a problem if you don't replace/raise the window, too. You need that sink for the feel of the kitchen if you want to keep the look of the cabs. It will probably cost the same to just buy new cabinets. But that doesn't solve the sink problem in the same foot print. And if you change the foot print then you've opened a new can of worms. Changing the window size would probably be the best thing to do....See MoreWe want to add counter top above washer and dryer
Comments (16)@ greendesigns. My countertop is extremely light and I can simply pull it forward to access the hoses or to pull the washer/dryer out. The basket that sits in the middle of the countertop actually blocks the water valves. Because the table that I used for the legs is skinnier than the table that I used for the top (24 v. 30), there is room for the dryer vent to run behind the machines and to the vent without hitting the "legs". One of my kids always unloads his backpack and switches out his notebooks in the laundry room and before he used to always drop stuff in the crevices between and behind the machines, but no more!! @lasummers24 - Top is 30x60. Sides are ~24x40. I followed this blog to make the laundry room counter: https://helen.blog/2014/01/house-project-laundry-room-and-table/ Basically, the laundry room counter consists of an IKEA linnmon table top (I used white, but it comes in other colors - it is normally $39, but goes on sale for $29), two shorter IKEA linnmon table tops for the legs (I think these were $19/each), 4 L brackets to attach the "legs" to the top and 4 furniture glides put into the bottom of the legs as feet. The furniture glides gave me a bit more space between the tops of the washer/dryer and the counter top (some people suggested the machines needed room to breath). They also gave me some space between the floor and the legs so in case there is a water leak, the legs won't get instantly wet. My washer/dryer are not on pedestals. I am only 5'2", so if they were, I would not be able to use the countertop! Basket blocking the ugly water valves in the picture below. You can see here that the table I used for the legs is not as wide as the table top. This is great because it allows the dryer vent to pass by the legs to connect with the vent, but I did not like the look of the gap, so I placed the basket with dog leashes there to cover the hole and prevent things from falling through the crevice....See MoreAny ideas on floor tile for farmhouse kitchen/ counter tops?
Comments (7)I agree with LWO--cooktop on the back wall. Also agree about time spent on each kitchen task. (The rest of his post seems a little hyperbolic.) You can then center the sink on the island, and prep to the left, across from the cooktop. The work triangle is contained in an area the size of a normal kitchen ;), and since the sink, DW, and trash pull-out are centered on the island, you have the option to reduce the widths of the drawers on each end, if finding a counter slab that wide proves difficult. I moved the ovens out of the corner (see pic at bottom for possible corner storage options), and drew the cabinets on the back wall deeper than standard, since you have such a wide work aisle. That will also provide more counter space, and if you're using a custom cabinet builder, you can have deeper drawers, for extra storage space. I'd suggest making the bar sink at least 18" wide, so it doubles as a prep sink when you have helpers in the kitchen. I reduced the size of the sink in the butler's pantry, to 18", and added a full-height ROTS pantry unit in there. You could also have a pull-out pantry to the right of the ovens, depending on which corner storage option is chosen. I made the counter deeper in the pantry and omitted the jog to recess the fridge. Cabinet widths are approximate and need to be verified. GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See MoreDebbie Stalsberg
