How to support 15 inch soapstone overhang in 8 foot island
Comments (19)Please see the thread below (but do not post any questions, etc., on it. If it doesn't answer the OP's question, the OP should continue to post here. If it doesn't answer anyone else's questions, please start your own thread and don't hijack mommytofive's thread.) From the thread, "Stone Information and Advice (& Checklists)": Countertop Support - depth: If your granite is 2 cm thick, then there can be no more then 6" of of unsupported span with a 5/8" subtop If your granite is 3 cm thick, then there can be no more then 10" of unsupported span - no subtop required If you need support, to determine your corbel dimensions: Thickness of Stone - Dimension of Unsupported Span = Corbel Dimension e.g., an 18" total overhang in 2 cm would require a 12" corbel; the same overhang in 3 cm would require an 8" corbel Countertop Support - length: A corbel or support every 30" of unsupported overhang Ask your fabricator to look into "Counter Balance Brackets". They offer support without being obvious. At least one company, "Chemical Concepts" has them. http://www.chemical-concepts.com/marketsegment/product/view/135/countertop-fabrication/counterbalance/9/) http://www.chemical-concepts.com/media/pdf/CounterBalance%20Product%20Guide.pdf...See MoreRaised wood breakfast bar overhang on quartz - supports?
Comments (5)I just spent an hour removing a shelf that had been secured to a tile wall with silicone today. Wipe the quartz and wood with acetone, dab a nickel sized bead of silicone on the quartz in a random pattern every 16" or so across the 12", set the wood and forget about it. You can stand on the cantilever the next day and you'll only get it off by driving shims between them, just like I had to do. Mechanical fasteners are unnecessary. Silicone is reversible. A chipboard core with veneer is much more dimensionally stable than the real thing. If you're not chopping on it, it's the best choice....See MoreNeed help! Supporting granite overhang on island
Comments (20)Thank you, Joseph! I think the issue is that we have a much larger overhang than 15" planned. It is currently spec's for 41" (but is supported on the ends by 6x6 posts.) Of course, I never realized it was so wide. I am fine making it shallower, but was hoping to preserve one seating spot on each end. How do I support the center of the countertop (which would be about 8' between the posts at a depth of somewhere between 30"-41". Does that make sense? I was looking at cantilever brackets, but no one says how far of an overhang can be supported. My dad thought 4" Channel irons could work, but I have no idea....See MoreIsland Overhang Support
Comments (42)It's really hard to tell from photos. You'd have to be able to see the entire room from different angles to really know. I have on occasion raised pendants noticeably higher than what standard guide lines say, and the results were much better for all the sightlines. Fortunately, I had a really good electrician who took the time to let me try out different configurations....See Morebreezygirl
