need help with supporting granite over dishwasher overhang
Comments (13)I really appreciate your help Annkh, Hollysprings, and Trebuchet :) So, the thread I linked to below clarified a lot for me! The dishwasher isn't installed yet and I wasn't 100% clear on the installation requirements. I learned a few things: a. the dishwasher opening needs to be exactly 23-5/8" wide in order to prevent noise issues b. the dishwasher needs to be installed with no gap between its top and the countertop What that means is - 1. I cannot use the 20x20 L brackets mounted on the back wall because they would cause an unacceptable 1/2" gap on top of the dishwasher (noise issues) 2. I probably should not use cleats on the sides, because that would create gaps beside the dishwasher sides, which could lead to noise issues. That leaves an additional panel on the left hand side (bracketed to the wall/floor) as the only solution that will create an acceptable dishwasher install *and* countertop support. Now I have to evaluate how to deal with the resulting asymmetry (more panel on the left hand side of the dishwasher) and figure out if I still have enough hinge clearance on the left hand side of the fridge. Trebuchet - thank you for the instructions on how to attach a cleat to 5/8" particleboard - that is very useful info that I will use elsewhere in the kitchen install :) Annkh - I have room at the back, not the sides. Hollysprings - bingo with your comment on how gaps will affect dishwasher install. Comments (26)Folks- Let me just point out that the stone (3CM most likely in this application) will need to be adhered to the pony wall and the cabinet assembly with an adhesive of some sort - latex caulk, silicone, polyester or epoxy (I use latex caulk and sometimes silicone) to "freeze" the stone assembly to the substrate. The stone (IMHO) should never be just "set dry" on any substrate. The overhang intel from MIA is indeed designed to deal with the fulcrum effect that a piece of stone will develope - when more of it's mass is not supported by a substructure - ie: pony wall or cabinet assembly.... I am NOT an Engineer.. (I should have been cuz I love the structural stuf and all) but alas - I am just a Fab-Ri-Mi-Cator that's been doing this Natural Stone gig for 24 1/2 years now. and I have seen, done & learned a lot over the years. We are ALL in the learning curve at all times - it is just that some of us have been in the curve longer than others..... Thanks for all of your kind words - I hope that you'll benefit from my ramblings. You can also check out my consumer education website at natural stone 101.com. I will be posting pod-casts on various topics on Natural Stone that are brought up by consumers. kevin...See MoreKitchen island granite overhang support
Comments (6)Similar thread recently. Joe posted pics of installing corbels into a cabinet. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3549316/quartzite-peninsula-overhang?n=11 For overhangs you need to have corbels built into the cabinet or support brackets. That far of an overhang I would recommend corbels built into the cabinet. Might even need support legs honestly. You need to be confident there is no movement, if they do corbels and it still wiggles a little due to the distance, then do support legs also. Remember your considering this a table... tables usually have legs. Keep that in mind....See MoreNEED ADVICE - Kitchen Island Granite Overhang Support
Comments (8)I worry when my 200 lb teenage son puts weight on my 12" overhang ... yours just seems like an accident waiting to happen. I would never think of putting weight on a cantilevered surface like this, but most people don't even give it a thought and some would even hop up and attempt to sit there!...See MoreFori
