Island and Counter Balance install (no corbels) Pic Heavy
Comments (11)I did Breezy! He said Friday. DH is out of town on business till Friday night so he was hoping that install would be Saturday. It will just have to be a nice surprise when he comes home :) Of course I'm panicking because while I have been assembling and installing the rest of the drawers, I've found a few things that the guys missed that should be done before granite (extra support for sink & support for the top two drawers of our 30" bank of drawers) but DH said he can just make them work after granite is installed. Hope he's right! I have so much anxiety. I told him the other day, I know we are SO lucky to be getting our kitchen remodeled, but for the past few months of living with construction and every single room of our home a mess, dust and sawdust everywhere, dealing with contractors, design decisions, and financial stress (of course we went over budget, etc.) I feel like I can't relax in my own home. Just counting the days until we have a functioning kitchen again and I'm not sweeping our "paper/cardboard" floors anymore. Sorry - late night venting after a glass of wine. Two more days until we are one step closer!!!...See Moreurgent island overhang support question
Comments (11)The plywood is put on before templating and cut to be flush with the cabinets on the side without seating overhang and extending about an inch or two less than you want the overhang on the overhang sides. The templater than measures the plywood and the granite top is made to fit. At least that is how it was done for us. Our steel bars are about 2" wide and 1/2" thick. The steel bars can't crisscross. There isn't enough thickness of the plywood for that. To support an overhang on two sides, the steel bars could run at angles so that they radiate from the corner opposite the overhangs. Our bars were angled to avoid the prep sink and range top cut outs. Our bars are long enough to run all across the top of the island. Our granite has a laminated edge that hides the edge of the plywood. I have friends who don't have a laminated edge who used a piece of molding stained to match their cabinets to cover the plywood edge. The bottom of our plywood is unfinished. I wish I had thought to ask our GC to use one with cherry veneer facing down and stained to match our cabinets. Nobody but me notices it....See MoreNEED ADVICE - Kitchen Island Granite Overhang Support
Comments (8)I worry when my 200 lb teenage son puts weight on my 12" overhang ... yours just seems like an accident waiting to happen. I would never think of putting weight on a cantilevered surface like this, but most people don't even give it a thought and some would even hop up and attempt to sit there!...See MoreInstalling island overhang support posts
Comments (5)That needs to be pulled immediately! It’s a huge risk. The support for this has to be integrated with the cabinet sides, just like creating a table. The entire design must be created to support the additional weight. Posts are not stable without the framework to keep them in place. That framework could be invisible steel, or wood, but it HAS to exist, and be designed as a whole. This is a 36” x26” overhang. We used a 1/4” steel plate here, with small welded flanges on the edges to decrease deflection and increase rigidity. It’s bolted to the 3/4” cabinet box with bent tabs, and then the decorative end panel covered the side. It has a pin locator in the floor for the post, for additional stability against kids sliding in socks. And of course the island is firmly fastened to the foundation too....See MoreJeffrey R.
