Family room redecorating help, please - pics
Comments (17)Thanks, everyone! The wheels are turning in my head with your ideas and suggestions! pal: Interesting idea with the gray/brown paint between the hearth and mantle. Mentioned it to DH and we are strongly considering that. I don't like ceiling fans, and I hate ceiling fan lights, but we use both, although we don't use the light much. I will think about how to eliminate the light, but we will need a furniture layout that has a light in the middle of the room. lyban: You may be right about the picture not needing a frame. I guess without one, it kind of blends in to the wall and makes less of a statement. We've had it hanging there frameless for over a year now. I think I'm struggling with what to do with the long mantle and wall on either side, where with the old art, it's spread out more. gwbr54: You know, you're right about the TV. It's more like listening to the TV while preparing dinner. OTOH, I can see it from the kitchen when there's something on that interests me. Putting the TV on the garage wall would solve a lot of problems. I'll see what DH says... Thank you for taking the time to post that furniture layout! I love the seating area by the windows. I hope DH's back is feeling good today, because we are going to be moving some furniture to try things out! Nanabella: I will try this later today - thanks! braider: Thank you for the 12x12 info. That's very helpful. That color site is interesting - will poke around there later when I have time. The rug is really carpet in a taupe color. It doesn't match the wall color at all (or the furniture, for that matter). We really messed up when picking that color. The good news is that it is not expensive to replace that smallish piece of carpet. So, I can place rugs over the carpet, but not really get rid of it, unless I am missing something. We also like the softness of the carpet w/ padding, and our 2 dogs like it as well. I will think about the color for the chair, but I think it's time for a new sofa (yeah!). Thanks again, everyone!...See MoreHelp with work zone & banquette design?
Comments (19)"Is your family the kind that will keep the island totally clear? Otherwise, an island with stuff on it will further detract from your view." Yes, in between meal prep we are fairly good about cleanup/putting clutter away. STILL, though, our kid's preschool art projects have to go somewhere when they first get home, so rather than fight that reality and not have any drop zone for that stuff (thus dumping it on the island), I'm thinking to just acknowledge it and contain it with a command ctr where we can have a drawer just for those art projects. "When renovating our house, I evaluated the view from points in my new floor plan. My priority was that when people walk into our house and look ahead-bam- there's the mountain straight ahead, framed by a large window. Maybe that's something for you to try. What do you want people to see when they walk in? Does that matter to you?" Great question for me to talk through w/ my husband. I have been thinking much more about connections to the back yard. We do a lot of grilling and hopefully backyard dining in the summer months; I like the banquette near that "action" as a way of feeling more connected to the outdoors. "Are you working with a designer? It sounds like you have a beautiful property and big ideas. There's a big opportunity here for something amazing or something short sighted." Not yet but not opposed to it. I am not sure if we need an architect, or a design-build firm, or just a contractor, or... ?...See MoreFront porch, patio, or pergola?
Comments (25)ningret. Great Idea! My son loves to sit on the "porch" and watch cars and tractors go by. We also have good friends across the street who are outside often, and another set of neighbors with grandkids that are the same age and over daily. So I find us out on our super mini porch often. However I think it makes sense to just make the most of our little porch (I have a wicker couch out there now...super comfy...) and just live with that. As the kids that older I do see them wanting to sit and watch tractors as much ;) We also have a killer backyard. Thanks for the advice!...See MoreBump out plumbing?
Comments (6)Calidesign I kind of thought about that myself. The problem is, that area is literally short length wise by a 1/2 inch to fit most standard tubs, and it's not quite wide enough for a standard tub without being in the way of either door. Plus the only power outlet in the whole bathroom is in that bump out. At one point I was considering actually moving my tub there. But instead of having it slide in to fit that space turn it 90 degrees. If I did this I could get rid of that 6" space and wall it off straight. Then I could open that extra space up into our bedroom. If I did that it would allow me to move the sink and toilet to where the tub is now. This would actually solve a lot of problems for me in terms of plumbing. I really could possibly leave the toilet where it currently sits. But my whole goal with this process is so that I can eventually widen the bathroom door as well. Both entries into the bathroom won't allow a wheelchair or other walking aid to pass through easily. At some point in my life either myself or my wife is going to end up in a wheel chair. It's just a matter of who beats who. On a side note though. While turning the tub a full 90 degree in that spot sounds like a great idea. The width of the tube itself would actually decrease the ability to get something like a wheel chair in and out of that room easily. I just have to face it. I got a small bathroom and I'm trying to make use of what is otherwise a wasted space....See MoreFori
