Does Anyone Grow Gingers Under Lights?
Comments (1)I have kept a few gingers over the winter in the basement light garden. Hedychium coronarium has flowered (probably thanks to a summer outdoors) and stays in fairly good condition on the floor, with its stalks receiving incidental light from a couple of fixtures hanging over neighboring plants. So total lumens are fairly low, but they suffice to keep the plant going during the winter months....See MoreDoes anyone have a Sharp Under Cabinet Microwave R1214
Comments (12)As an update, I should note that my original ca. 2010 Sharp 1214 OTC developed an issue this past Spring with a stuck microswitch among the three that are actuated by the door closing. The symptom was apparent failure to stop when the door was opened. This would, of course, be a problem with a microwave source, but in actuality, only the lamp and fan kept running. The MW source (magnetron) has more redundant safeguards. While waiting for parts I obtained a new model of the same unit and installed it. I have repaired the old unit and kept it for a spare. As it turned out, the microswitch was only a tad gummy, and once freed worked normally. I replaced it anyway, and cleaned the interior spaces (lightly greasy) and venting paths. I think the new model has a brighter display, so the old model's display may have faded some (lost contrast). I don't think the display would be cost-effective to replace due to being buried in the door. Although I tore the unit apart to get to everything (other than the door interior), the microswitches are fairly accessible with just the cover removed. Dissassembly manuals are available on the Internet, and parts still available from Sharp's designated distributor. I also obtained an example of the recommended microwave leakage test meter, and checked out the old MW. No measurable leakage relative to Sharp's standard of 1 mW/cm2, much less the US Government's limit of 5 mW/cm2. I could only get a reading inside the MW's shell next to the magnetron output, so I think the design maintains a safe environment even after significant age....See MoreDoes anyone have warming drawer under their scoop drawer?
Comments (7)I reported a repair & had the service technician come out to check out the warming drawer. His explanation after verifying the temperature is correct is that the drawer is UL certified (Underwriter's Laboratory) & pretty much operating as designed -- not a direct quote. I told him that my assessment of the situation is that this is a design problem. KA has a great idea to add additional capabilities to the warming drawer (slow cooking -- works great, I can do multiple dishes simultaneously), but the drawer is commonly being insulated when placed under a single or double oven. KA does not design for serious cooks (for example, they design a maximum size 30" warming drawer so it will fit nicely under the oven stack). Serious cooks want & need their warming drawers more accessible. Thus I installed under my 36 inch KA cooktop (& scoop drawer). With the gaps left between the drawer & the spice pullouts I had the cabinet maker create filler panels on the island beside the drawer. I asked the technician to report my concerns. In the meantime I sent an email to KA & their net was working-as-designed, move the utencils (I have to use an oven mit with the metal handled utencils in the drawer after using the slow cooker function.) I have noticed a blog & I will attempt to get there over the next few weeks to see what response I get. Additionally, DH had some water heater insulation we placed on top of the warming drawer. Although it reduced the temperature a few degrees, I could still not hold my metal-handled utencils with my bare hand. The KD is asking the cabinet guy if a panel can be built above the warming drawer. If anyone else uses this feature on the KA Warming Drawer I'm interested in your experience....See MoreDoes anyone have baseboard heat under island?
Comments (14)I have a toekick heater and under my sink. Would show a pic but the kitchen is in the middle of renovation and I am having another one put in. Same make ~newer model - Quiet-One KS2004 Kickspace Heater by Smith Enviroental. The old one was rusted and giving problems (16 years old). I did not want to risk it leaking, etc. It is tied into my forced hot water heating system. Company literature says: Our Series 2000 kickspace heaters are engineered for use in hard to heat places such as stair risers, dressing rooms, bookcases, booth seating in restaurants, pubs and many other low level areas. We can be hooked up to boilers, hot water heaters, heat exchangers, ground source heat pumps, geothermal heat sources and reclamation heat sources. IÂve pasted a link to information on the products. Scroll down and look at the sizes available. Mine is the smallest one ..about 13 7/8" wide , 3 ½:" high (model KS2004). It now comes with an extra white faceplate covers that I opted for. Here is a link that might be useful: Info on Smith Kickspace Heater...See Moreimrainey
