How to finish above the vent hood?

You all have been a great source of inspiration to me, and since I now find myself stuck on one detail in particular I thought I'd pose my dilemma here.

We're about 60% done in the kitchen -- traditional farmhouse style, inset beaded cabinets -- and I've run into a problem with how to finish the space above the vent hood. We were originally supposed to have a chimney-style hood, but the budget got squeezed by other issues, so I had to go with something a bit more standard (Broan Elite/Rangemaster 36").

My problem is that the the range and hood sit on a wall in between two banks of windows. Without the chimney, there will be ductwork showing above the top of the hood that I'll need to hide. But how to do it and not have it look like a forgotten detail? And not have the hood looking as if it is floating in space on the wall?

Anyone have any brilliant ideas? I've looked through the FKB and still am not finding anything that jumps out at me.
